ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

Okay, I give: What's a smut?
According to the same esteemed dictionary, a smut is any of
various destructive diseases, especially of cereal grasses,
caused by parasitic fungi (order Ustilaginales) and marked
by transformation of plant organs into dark masses of
spores; also: a fungus causing a smut. And then, of course,
there is the definition we are most acquainted with: smut as
obscene language or matter.
Are there any fossilized fungi?
Yes, there are. In fact, scientists report that they have
found the oldest fossil evidence yet of a fungus. A team of
Berkeley researchers discovered remnants of a fungus dating
back an estimated 460 million years. Other fungi previously
found were much younger. It now seems that fungi showed up
about the same time that green plants moved from ocean to
land and fungi may have played a significant role in the
plant migration by helping the plants' roots obtain
nutrients.

In A Minute, CBS Finds New Spot Of TV Programming
by Wayne Friedman
CBS SEEMS TO HAVE FOUND the sweet spot of programming for
both traditional TV viewers and mobile video device users:
the one-minute program. The network said it will run a
"micro-series," called "The Courier," in seven episodes of a
minute or less each to be available first on traditional TV
and then through mobile phones on Verizon Wireless V Cast
Service.
"The Courier" is about a man risking his life to rescue his
kidnapped wife. It will debut Tuesday, Jan. 24, during the
first-act commercial break of "CSI: Miami," and will
conclude during "Criminal Minds" on Feb. 1.
"The Courier" is different from other content deals that try
to shoehorn shows onto portable devices. It's
self-contained. It's also not made up of "mobisodes," which
are original to services like V Cast, and doesn't riff off
of existing TV series, such as Fox's "24."
CBS' invention of the one-minute show works perfectly in the
still-traditional TV world of 30-second and 60-second
commercials. In fact, it'll give viewers some
pause--literally--perhaps slowing down all those
fast-forwarding DVR consumers. The tiny shows would also
break the predictable pace and clutter of advertising
commercial pods.
Now, this concept isn't new. NBC tried its one-minute movies
some time back. A host of marketers like Nike and Mitsubishi
produced action-adventure-like commercials in which
consumers could see the endings--or alternative
endings--online. Last year ESPN did a series of
sponsored-story vignettes--also serialized--with product
placement. These vignettes ran as programming content,
segments on "SportsCenter."
The CBS approach doesn't play the TV/Internet game the same
way. Because the episodes are self-contained--first on
traditional TV and later for mobile users--they stop viewers
from doing a video device juggle. Too many TV marketing
gimmicks want us to turn away from our traditional TV
viewing, and run over to our computers, or cell phones, to
find some sort of lame ending to a commercial or vignette.
The disconnect is still this: TV is the passive medium. The
Internet, mobile phones and other devices are proactive.
One problem: How does one market this? Surely the network
can't spend that much money convincing viewers to find a
one-minute show.
It's tough enough to get consumers to watch regular-sized
30-minute or 60-minute long TV shows, by spending lots of
promo time and money. Perhaps the answer comes from having
these one-minute shows sponsored, with advertisers doing the
heavy lifting of promotion. (In fact, Pontiac has begun
doing just that.)
Now that CBS has figured out how to cut down some
programming to its essence, it'll have to do the same for
marketing: A one-minute show probably needs--what else?--an
equally cool one-second promo.

Your Body And Balance
You may recall that one of my passions is to help people
with Meniere's. This is a condition which has varies degrees
of debilitation, some of the worst being "drop attacks".
Other symptoms include hearing loss, vertigo, pressure in
the ear, and tinnitus. There are others, but those are the
"classics".
Recently, I had the opportunity to consult with a couple of
chiropractors and massage therapists, and ask them if they
thought their particular area of interest had a connection
to Meniere's. I really wanted them to help me understand
that if the body's musculo-skeletal system was out of
balance, could the ear be affected.
I asked if misalignment or injury of the neck, shoulder, or
spine could throw everything off balance and contribute to
MM symptoms. And they heartily agreed it could cause
imbalance and thus add to or initiate problems of the inner
ear.
They reminded me that the skull, neck, and shoulders all had
moveable parts: bones that are "hinged" and should move
smoothly and naturally. The attached muscles and other
tissues should move smoothly in unison. However once this
motion is hindered in any way, imbalance is created, and
with it comes its many challenges. Bones can "tighten up and
freeze". Blocked or impaired circulation can prevent
nutrition and fluids from reaching vital parts or draining
them. In some areas such as the inner ear, an overabundance
of fluids could be trapped and thus put pressure on the
balance or the acoustic nerves. This pressure allows
incorrect messages to go to the brain and returns
inappropriate commands - drop attacks, hearing impairment,
vertigo, etc. Balance is vital in our cells, our bodies, our
lives.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"The next migration will be on us in less than a month.
after that we'll have to wait six months."
"I don't know about you, but I think we should catch the
next one. Otherwise we'll be too busy preparing and have no
time for enjoying the affair."
"I think you're right, Billy. Within a month would be
too soon. Besides we have to give Mom and Dad a bit of a
chance to get used to the idea. Also, we should give some
thought to what the village will think of you and I living
here, plus, what will they think of such a big affair
happening here?"
"By gosh, I think you're right. If we want their
cooperation we will need to keep them informed. You know the
old adage, folks are down on what they're not up on. The
more we keep them in the loop the more cooperation we can
expect. Good thinking."
"What else is there to work out?"
"Nothing I can think of now, honey. But I'm sure
something will come up. Let's go talk with your folks."
They both rose and began to walk back to Sonora's folks
place. They sat down for a hot drink. Billy was sweating
when he finally finished his drink.
The kids told Sonora's folks what they had just decided,
or at least were asking for Kenyata's and Mombudo's input.
The folks thought about it some and then asked the
occasional question. "I suppose we'll have to erect some
huts for the guests" was the observation of Mombudo.
"Yes, Daddy, but with higher law that presents no
difficulty. What do you think the village with think of such
a large affair?"
"We cannot do this without consulting with the headman
of the village, Sonora. That would be unwise. However, they
do appreciate the water and they know full well how it is
we, in this village, have good, clean, fresh water where
other villages do not. I think they will be excited about it
and may even want to participate. The real question is what
will you do if they want the marriage ceremony to be a
traditional village ceremony?"
"You mean where the headman performs the ceremony?"
"Yes."
"I'm quite sure that would be okay. What do you think,
Billy?"
"Kenyata, in truth we are already married, at least
insofar as our commitment to each other. We have not
consummated the relationship, nor are we living together
because we live in man's world. It is necessary for the
world around us to realize we are married. It is important
to them that they be allowed to give their blessings. Sure,
the headman performing the wedding will be fine with me.
However, I think there could be others who may want to talk,
such as at the last few weddings we have attended. It would
be a good idea to have the headman prepared for that."
"That part will be okay, Billy. There is room in the
traditional ceremony for others to speak."
"Good."
"By the way, I caught your comment about already being
married. Yes, you are right, and here we have no particular
laws as to the break up of a marriage, so the actual
ceremony may not be so important here as it is in your
country, Billy. Where you live marriage is a legal matter,
not a religious matter. Even those who conduct the
ceremonies require a license from government to do so. It
really means couples enter into a legal agreement over which
there are laws that spell out their new condition. I
appreciate you two waiting to consummate the relationship.
That will show in the marriage ceremony. You have done
well."
"Thank you Kenyata. I suppose you want me to call you
Mom, now."
Kenyata picked up a piece of firewood and holding it
high, chased Billy. It was a funny scene and all who saw it
laughed.
Billy, the diplomat, offered these words to Kenyata.
"You know, I really like that idea, actually. Kenyata it
would be an honor for me to call you Mother."
Kenyata blushed, "Well, Billy, it looks like we both
have something we will have to get used to."
"I suppose we should build a hut for me to live in until
we are married and for us to live in after."
"Because of the water situation, Billy, the village will
not accept more huts unless they are consulted first. They
do not know or think the well will give out just as much
water as is needed. They think too many people drawing from
the well will make the well run out of water. They will
likely accept one more hut, but when we speak to the headman
about putting up three, four or five more, for guests, we
will have to convince him we will also supply our own water.
If he can be persuaded to understand that I am sure he will
give us permission and his blessings."
"I guess I have to get used to the way things are done
around here. I can see his point. I will go with Sonora to
ask permission to have just one more hut. I think Sonora and
I can persuade him at least that far."
"I think he will listen to Sonora. Once he finds you,
too, live by higher law he will be much more attentive to
you. And when it is drawn to his attention that it is those
who live by higher law that have kept his village safe, I
suspect you will get his wholehearted cooperation. Give it a
try." Kenyata knew what she was talking about.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Handkerchief: What is the origin of the word "handkerchief"?
The "ker" of this word comes from the Old French covrir,
meaning "to cover". The "chief" comes from chef, meaning
"head" A "kerchief" was originally a "head covering"
especially the bit of cloth used by women to cover their
heads when entering a Catholic Church. A "handkerchief" was
one carried in the hand.

The Drug Problem in America
The other day, someone at a store in our town read that a
methamphetamine lab had been found in an old farmhouse in
the adjoining county and he asked me a rhetorical question,
''Why didn't we have a drug problem when you and I were
growing up?''
I replied: "I had a drug problem when I was young: I was
drug to church on Sunday morning. I was drug to church for
weddings and funerals. I was drug to family reunions and
community socials no matter the weather.
"I was drug by my ears when I was disrespectful to adults. I
was also drug to the woodshed when I disobeyed my parents,
told a lie, brought home a bad report card, did not speak
with respect, spoke ill of the teacher or the preacher, or
if I didn't put forth my best effort in everything that was
asked of me.
"I was drug to the kitchen sink to have my mouth washed out
with soap if I uttered a profane four-letter word. I was
drug out to pull weeds in mom's garden and flower beds and
cockleburs out of dad's field. I was drug to the homes of
family, friends, and neighbors to help out some poor soul
who had no one to mow the yard, repair the clothesline, or
chop some firewood; and, if my mother had ever known that I
took a single dime as a tip for this kindness, she would
have drug me back to the woodshed."
Those drugs are still in my veins; and they affect my
behavior in everything I do, say, and think. They are
stronger than cocaine, crack, or heroin; and, if today's
children had this kind of drug problem, America would be a
better place.
