TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

How many Americans died in the American Revolution?

When did "The Star-Spangled Banner" become the US national
anthem?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What is the world's deadliest mushroom?

Amanita phalloides, called appropriately enough the "death
cap" or "death cup," is one deadly mushroom. Ingesting this
mushroom, which contains five different poisons, causes
diarrhea and vomiting, followed by damage to the kidneys,
liver, and central nervous system. In most cases, the end
result is coma and death.

Who were the minutemen?

The minutemen were volunteer soldiers who fought for the
American colonies against the British during the
Revolutionary War. They were called that because they were
said to be able to take up arms at a minute's notice.

E-Mail Marketers Face Holiday Backlash
by Wendy Davis

CONSUMERS WERE HIT WITH AN unexpected deluge of
e-mails this holiday season after registering with a Web
site or marketer, according to a new report by e-mail
marketing services company Return Path.

For the report, Return Path surveyed 1,814 adults in the
United States and Canada during the last week of December.
Almost half of the respondents--44 percent--said they were
surprised at the sheer volume of e-mail to hit their
in-boxes after registering, while 22 percent said the amount
of e-mail was about what they anticipated, and an additional
28 percent said they had no definite expectations about
volume when they registered.

The vast majority of respondents--83 percent--noticed more
e-mails between Halloween and Christmas; when Return Path
conducted a similar survey in 2004, just 73 percent of
respondents noticed an uptick during the holidays. What's
more, 17 percent of respondents said the surge in e-mails
during the 2005 holiday season was "overwhelming," compared
to 10 percent one year ago.

How did consumers respond to the extra e-mail? Sixty-eight
deleted them, while 34 percent reported the messages as
spam--a troubling development for e-mail marketers because
Internet service providers sometimes classify marketers as
spammers based on consumer complaints.

"Consumers use that 'S' word very easily," said Stephanie
Miller, vice president of strategic services at Return Path.
"Their definition of spam is completely different from a
marketer's definition of spam," she said, adding that
consumers consider anything that doesn't interest them to be
spam; legally, e-mail isn't spam if a consumer has opted-in
to receive messages.

But, even if consumers mistakenly flag e-mail as spam, doing
so causes Internet service providers to consider the sender
a spammer, and start blocking the sender's messages, Miller
said. What should marketers do? Miller said the best course
is to clearly state how often e-mails will arrive--monthly,
weekly, or daily--during the sign-up process.

The news wasn't all bad for e-mail marketers. About 50
percent of respondents said they took advantage of offers
that arrived via e-mail, up from 44 percent the year before.
Discounts and free shipping offers also appeared to sway
some consumers into opening e-mails. Twenty-five percent of
respondents said markdown promises persuaded them to open
messages--up from 18 percent last year; free shipping lured
20 percent of respondents to open e-mails, compared to 15
percent one year ago.

"There's still a great opportunity to connect with consumers
over e-mail, but only if the e-mail's relevant," Miller
said.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Kidney Disease

I just finished canvassing for the Kidney Foundation.
It was a great experience to help people understand
the damage it does to families, as any negative health
condition can do

Along with my daily walk, I got to see both the
neighbours and their spring gardens, plus the bonus
of a lot of fresh air.

What was interesting was the literature I handed out It
is easy to read and has little nuggets of helpful information.

Here are some of the warning signs: high blood
pressure , passing bloody or cloudy urine, excessive
foaming of urine, puffiness of the hands eyes and feet,
especially in children. It also causes frequent night
trips to the bathroom.

And who is at risk most commonly? People with Diabetes,
people with high blood pressure and close relatives of
those with hereditary kidney disease.

Kidney disease is silent and it has usually done most of its
damage before any symptoms appear. So prevention
and early monitoring is imperative.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to

your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X

After lunch, Billy and Sonora went off looking for the
headman of the village. He wasn't hard to find. The man was
older and rarely left his house.

"Good day Siepta. This man is Billy Hendricks. He is
from the United States. I have known Billy for a long time.
He lives by higher law, like me. Billy and I want to be man
and wife, and we want to live here. Can we speak to you
about some of the things that might happen?"

"Sit" Siepta was a man of few words, not unlike Mombudo.

"Siepta, Billy and I have decided we would like to live
here. We would like to build a hut over by my Mom's and
Dad's. There we would live and have our children. Today we
come to you to see if you would give us permission to build
a hut. Billy will live in it until we get married."

"What about water?"

"Siepta, there is plenty of water to support this
village even when it includes Billy. I would be here to ask
you if I could build a hut, even if I were to marry someone
from the village. So it is not anything especially
different. The only thing that is happening is there would
be one more person in the village, Billy. Because Billy
lives by higher law, he can help keep the village safe and
he can ensure that we never run out of water, no matter how
large the village gets."

"He can do this?"

"Yes, Siepta, he can do this."

"Then you can build your hut."

"Thank you Siepta. Now there is something else we want
to talk to you about. We want to get married here in the
village. We want you to perform the ceremony. Would you do
this for us?"

"When you want to marry?"

"In the middle of the herd migration following this very
next one. That is about six moons away."

"I will do ceremony."

"Do you have to consult the village elders?"

"Yes, but they say yes."

"There is something else you should know. We would like
to invite many, many friends from all over the world.
Between this village and the guests we invite there may be
as many as two hundred people. We think we will be asking
around 150. That means we would have to build many huts, and
it means there will be a big demand for water. Therefore we
will cause our guests to have their own water and they will
not touch the well. Also, when they leave, we shall
dismantle the huts so the village will again be just like it
is now. Of these things I promise to keep my word. Will you
and the elders permit us to do this? I expect the guests
will be with us for no more than seven suns."

"Are these people nice? Will they do any harm?"

"Siepta, these are friends of mine and of my Mom and
Dad. They all live by higher law. They are filled with love
and the village will be better because our friends visited.
Some of them you have already seen and met. Do you remember
Mr. Sam Henry? He and his wife and his grown up children
will be coming. Mr. Henry has been here many times and has
been a big help in protecting this village. I am sure he
will be welcome. All the people we invite will be like Mr.
Henry."

"Mr. Henry good man. I like. If all like Mr. Henry I
think elders will agree. I tell you two days."

"Thank you Siepta. I will be back in two days."

Billy rose with Sonora. He had not spoken a word, but he
had broadcast much love unto this man. He spoke, "Thank you
Siepta. I will work to keep much water and I will work to
keep village safe. I will respect your laws and I will live
according to the rules of this village. Thank you."

"Hmmpff."

With that Billy and Sonora returned home. They had been
away about an hour.

"How did things go?" Kenyata, knew, yet she was
interested.

"Fine, Mom" responded Billy. He knew that term sounded
strange both to him and to the others. He used it because he
knew it would not take long before everyone was used to it
and it would be an everyday thing. They would come to expect
it of him.

Kenyata looked up at him and had a smile on her face.
She was pleased with the choice her daughter made for a
husband. She liked him. She had her concerns about the
differences in the backgrounds of these kids, yet she knew
their primary focus was on their Makers within them and that
focus would not permit anything to get in the way of
decisions they made. Each was wholly committed to the other.
They would make this marriage work without difficulty.

"Well, go on, tell us. What about the idea of having
over a hundred people here?"

"Mom" Sonora answered this time, "his eyes got big but
he listened to us. I believe he trusts us and when I
mentioned one of those guests was going to be Mr. Henry,
whom he has met, and that the others were going to be like
Mr. Henry, then he seemed pleased. He must speak to the
elders about this but said he would have an answer for us in
two days. I think there will be no problems. Billy didn't do
much speaking, although when we were leaving he did assure
Siepta he would abide by the rules of the village. He gave
us permission to build a hut nearby and Billy could live in
it."

"Good. Maybe we should do that today!"

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Handwriting on the wall: Where do we get the expression
"handwriting on the wall"?

It's an allusion to the Bible. According to Daniel 5
"handwriting" appeared on the wall of Belshazzar's palace
wall "Mene, Mene, Tekel Upharsin". This writing announced to
Belshazzar the loss of his kingdom.

HA! HA! HA!

There was this rabbi in a small town, and he was really
curious about why so many people ate pork. He really wanted
to try some, but there was no where in town he could go and
not be seen. One weekend, he made an excuse and traveled to
a distant town, went into a restaurant, and ordered the
first pork item on the menu.

While he's waiting for his order of pork, the president of
his congregation walks in. He sees the rabbi and asks if he
could join him for dinner, and the rabbi has no choice but
to agree. A while later, the waiter returns with the rabbi's
meal. He takes the cover off the large platter, and there is
a whole roast pig, with an apple in its mouth.

The congregation president is more than a little shocked.

"What a fancy place," explains the rabbi quickly. "Just
look at how they serve the apple I ordered."
