TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Do insects have immune systems?
Could insects be cured with antibiotics?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is a "black act"?
It's slang for picking a lock in the dark.
Is the blood of insects red like ours?
No. Different species have different colors of blood.
Mammals have red blood and insects have yellow blood. The
real "blue bloods," by the way, are lobsters. Their blood is
literally blue.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
Shortly after delivering the first atomic weapons to Allied
forces in the Pacific during WW II the U.S.S. Indianapolis
was sunk by a Japanese submarine, however most of the crew
was not killed by the sinking, but by the sharks.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby

Do You Go Far Enough?
Over the years, my husband and I have usually managed to
decode the cute but confusing gender signs sometimes put on
restaurants' restroom doors (Buoys and Gulls, Laddies and
Lassies, etc.), but every so often we get stumped.
Recently my husband Dave wandered off in search of the men's
room and found himself confronted by two marked doors. One
was labeled "Bronco," and the other was designated "Cactus."
Completely baffled, he stopped a restaurant employee passing
by.
"Excuse me; I need to use the restroom," Dave said.
Gesturing toward the doors, he asked, "Which one should I
use?"
"Actually, we would prefer you to go there," the employee
said, pointing to a door down the hall marked "Men."
"Bronco and Cactus are private dining rooms."
I wonder why they put those names up like that. Cute, but
when in a hurry?
I have a friend who ran an auto garage once. He named his
washrooms Elton (John) and Olivia Newton (John).
Yet this joke does point out one mistake we all make when we
are seeking. It shows us we often do not go far enough. We
give up too soon or we are become confused easily.
Had the man in the joke gone further down the hall he would
have had his answer.
So, too, with us. If we only hang in there and keep going,
if we only put in the last little bit of effort, if we
refuse to give up, we will come across our answer.
All of life, and everything in it, is like climbing a
mountain. The mountain is never the challenge. Overcoming
oneself is the challenge. That is what happens on the
mountainside. The climber learns who he/she is.
When we look at life that way it is a big help to consider
carrying on, to go the extra step. That is where our pot of
gold is, after that extra step.
When you don't take that step, you miss it. Worse, it sets
up a pattern within you where too often you don't take that
extra step. You miss out on a lot.
Get in the habit, the practice of taking the extra step,
then another one and another.
Soon your objective will be in sight, and you will win.
Do You Go Far Enough?

Cancer
You Can Beat it or It Can Beat You
PART 2 of 3
Pretend I am your doctor and I have just told you that you
have stomach cancer...that you can have surgery and the
recovery possibilities are excellent.
Your choices, once you get over the shock, are
1. to make a decision to have the surgery and PLAN
activities for immediate follow up , PLUS job adjustment, at
home support, and a return to work date. You also KNOW you
will be well for the family gathering. Now things don't seem
so scary.
OR
2. You could decide that your life is over
finished. You
will still have the surgery, but now you dwell on all the
horror stories you have heard from well-meaning friends. You
decide it's not worth fighting
"Things never go your way
anyway"
"Why does this always have to happen to me?" "Why do
I have all this bad luck?"
you know the routine.
Also you do little post operative planning because "what's
the use
you're going to die soon anyway". With this
attitude, you are telling your body not to fight. You create
a very gloomy, hopeless mental environment.
Now I would like you to stop for a minute and decide which
scene makes you FEEL better? Which is making you feel
uncomfortable? Which one do you want to run away from?
Do relate to the first example
which causes inconvenience,
but is doable, or the second one which gives you a feeling
of complete and utter hopelessness?

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.
The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.
It will change your life. Go to
http://www.the-pebble.com OR order yours from
your favorite bookstore. ISBN # 1-4137-4723-X
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
This time there was no guard at the door. The group
walked straight in. The whole village was there and everyone
was packed into the back, around and behind the elders
seats. They were all talking to each other over the issues
at hand. All felt safe, being all together in the crowd. The
elders sat in the same chairs they always sat in.
When Billy, Sonora, Hemno, Kenyata and Mombudo arrived
there was a sudden hush that fell over the crowd. Some of
the people had not seen Billy. He had kept pretty much to
himself.
The elders motioned for them to sit. Billy took the lead
and sat where he had been shown to sit on the two previous
occasions he was invited here. The others sat in a row
behind him, with the exception of Sonora, whom he bid to sit
beside him.
The village headman was seated directly opposite Billy
and in the center of the elders. He raised his right hand to
command quietness and attention.
"You have asked to teach our children your ways. The
elders decided to have you speak to whole village. Some
afraid. They do not understand. Some elders have come to
your place. They say you are good, that you treat them right
and you explain things so they understand. They say to me
that Miss Sonora has kept evil armies away from our village
so we be safe. We did not know this. We thank Miss Sonora.
Now you come to this village and want to live here. We give
you permission. Then you ask to teach children. We have much
to think about. We not sure we want you to teach children.
This meeting the villagers will ask questions and when all
done they will say if you can teach children."
The headman was not asking permission. He was using his
authority to explain to Billy what was going to happen and
that in the end the villagers had the final say.
He went on, "explain to the villagers what you want and
what things will happen."
"Thank you for hearing me. Many of you I do not know,
although I have seen you around. I asked for and received
permission to live in this village. Miss Sonora and I are to
be married. Each of you is invited to the wedding. It will
be in the middle of the big herds, after this one. When the
council gave me permission to build my hut I also asked them
if Miss Sonora and I may teach your children to live as we
live. What we do is not black magic, but of God. We have
learned to go inside and listen to our Maker and do as we
are told. When we do this we then are able to live by the
laws our Maker set up so many years ago at the very
beginning of our world. Each man, woman and child can live
this way. It is only necessary they make the choice. We are
not allowed to sell you on the idea. We are not allowed to
create conditions where you will say yes. If you decide you
want to live this way then you must make that choice from
your own clear thinking and not because anyone caused the
condition to be easy.
We have come here today to see if you would like us to
teach your children. If you decide no, then we will not,
except when a child comes to us and wishes to ask questions.
Then we will answer. We will not force any child to learn.
Each must learn of his own free will. That is why we are
meeting today, that you might know how we would approach the
matter. If you say yes, then it is yes. If you say no, then
it is no. Do you have any questions?"
There was much murmuring in the crowd. They were asking
questions of and within themselves.
Billy spoke up, "kindly address your questions to me."
"Do . . .do you live as Miss Sonora does?"
"Yes, but being a man I'm better at it." Billy stuck out
his chest. Sonora hit him.
The whole crowd burst out laughing. Here was the man of
the house but he was being told what to do by his woman,
just like all the rest of the men here.
That seemed to break the ice. Somehow he was just
like them.
"I am white. I come from a land far away. I come from
the same town as Mr. Sam. Yes, we are told what to do by our
women, too."
The crowd laughed some more. Then there was a question
from the rear. "You teach our children and they go against
our ways?"
"Do not be confused on this point. We will not teach
your children to go against you. We will teach them a new
and better way, with new knowledge and new ways and new
ideas. That will mean they change the way they live as
compared to the way you presently live. That is not bad. It
is not good. It is only different."
"It bad."
"It is bad only if you think it is bad. It is good only
if you think it is good. So it is your thinking that makes
something good or bad. We will show the children how to
control their thoughts so all the things that are happening
to them are good. When they learn the law they, too, will be
able to protect the village as Miss Sonora does today."
"But who will look after cattle?"
"Unless you force them, it is unlikely all the children
will want to attend. We are interested only in those
children who want to learn."
"What if we say no? What if you have no children to
teach?"
"You mean, will I throw a curse upon you?"
"Yes, or something worse."
"As I have explained to some of the elders here, I can
do harm but because of the law that harm would come back to
me and hurt me worse than you. I have no desire to do that.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Jeep: Why is a "jeep" called that?
The first quarter-ton reconnaissance cars delivered to the
Army had painted on their sides the letters "G. P" which
stood for "General Purpose". "G. P." when said quickly
became "jeep". the utterance of a character in the "Popeye"
comic strip of Elzie Crisler Segar. "Eugene the Jeep" who
confines himself to saying "Jeep, jeep, jeep" may have helped
popularize the word.

A friend and her young son, Reid, were browsing in a large
bookstore. Engrossed in making a selection, my friend had
lost sight of her child.
"Reid!" she called out, racing through the aisles. "Reid!"
Just as she spotted the boy, she bumped into another
customer. "Pardon me, ma'am," he said, "but most folks come
here because they already like to read. No sense in wasting
your time trying to convince them."
