ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why was yeast once called "godisgood"? (If you're guessing
this has something to do with alcohol, you're almost
there...)

Yeast is necessary for beer, but people were making beer
long before anyone knew what yeast was. Fortunately, natural
yeast tended to stick in the crevices of brewing equipment,
which were usually made of wood. Since there was always
yeast around from the previous batch of beer, it multiplied
and helped with subsequent batches. People (especially beer
drinkers) basically regarded it as a miracle. Even after
they figured out that yeast was important to fermentation,
they still called it "godisgood." You can sometimes see that
term in old inscriptions.

Why is plastic surgery "plastic"?

You might think it's because plastic is used in some way or
that the people who have plastic surgery look more
artificial or "plastic." Neither is true. The name has no
connection at all with plastic. Rather, the term is derived
from the Greek word "plastikos," which means to mold or give
form. The specialty, of course, is concerned with appearance
and form.

Here's To Think On! ... with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

Follow Your Dreams!

There was once a young man who, in his youth, professed his
desire become a great writer.

When asked to define "great" he said, "I want to write stuff
that the whole world will read, stuff that people will react
to on a truly emotional level, stuff that will make them
scream, cry, howl in pain and anger!"

He now works for Microsoft, writing error messages.

Well, I guess he isn't doing quite what he and the rest of
us thought. But he is doing what he wanted. Wow! Microsoft
is the butt of many a joke.

Still, the joke does point out something. It says that if
you keep true to your dream you will achieve. In the joke
above we see a young man who wanted to be a writer.
Undoubtedly he never had this vision in mind, but he is
writing, where there is a need he never saw as a youth.

Often that happens to all of us. We dream of having
something, being a special person, doing something. Also,
some are fortunate to have that motivation from youth,
without having to make a choice or manufacture it. And, like
the joke above we end up doing something that appears to be
far from what our dream was, only to find, in time, we were
doing exactly as we should have been doing.

The story, movie, Mr. Holland's Opus comes to mind when I
think of this condition. Here we have a teacher that dreamt
of writing a magnificent musical work. While doing so he had
an incredible and wonderful affect on his students. In the
end he ended up being let go from his job because the school
systems budget could no longer support his music class. He
felt as if his life was a shambles. He felt as if he had not
accomplished a thing. Then one night he was asked out to the
school for a farewell party, only to find his students, past
and present, all got together to produce his "Opus". It was
wonderful and he then and only then realized the profound
effect he had on so many people.

You see, sometimes we are blind to the good we do. Sometimes
in chasing our dream we spread much good around that seems
nothing to us, yet when added up over a lifetime is
magnificent. I often see people in the midst of turmoil and
struggle, thinking they are doing nothing near what they
really wanted, yet are spreading much good around wherever
they go.

Too often I see handicapped people spreading cheer amongst
the healthy. Life is good. Many of us must realize that. And
many of us must learn to be happy right where we are.

Learn to go inside and determine your own value. You might
be doing a great deal of good without even thinking about
it. In fact, maybe you have already learned to - - - -

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - by Karin Henderson

Stress And How It Affects Your Physical Body
A Few Ideas To Enhance Your Fitness Level.
PART 1 of 9

When I write these articles, I try to determine what the reader
is like. From my information requests, you are part of a very
diverse group. My intent is to "translate" the medical
terminology and world into common language. But it is also to
give some helpful, practical suggestions to make life a little
more fun and liveable for anyone! However, in many of the
requests, I sense an additional but not formalized "hint".
Stress! If you are healthy, your life moves forward the way you
choose it to be. You can deal with stress, but in an "unwell"
situation, you are often at the "mercy" of a kind-hearted
person. And sometimes with that, problems appear. It affects
your decision-making abilities and your independence. In your
need to "lean" on another person, the boundaries you have set up
for yourself are often ignored. And stress always accompanies a
problem. So I would like to address a few of these "invisible"
but very real issues and make some suggestions. Hopefully, you
have created boundaries already. I hope you won't ever have to
use them.but they are ready to be defended.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Here We Go For Another Year, Folks!

Using our first issue of the new year I want to say thank
you for your continued loyalty.

Much of what I write in this column is not an inspiring
approach to life. Many of you may see it as discouraging,
dissapointing or as a downer. I don’t blame you for that is
what much of the world news looks like. What I really want
to come across though is the idea that together we can
figure out ways of dealing with the future as it unfolds. To
be menatally prepared means you are in a much better
position than if you stick your head in the sand and just
let things happen.

Remember always fear is the worst response you can have. It
is always clear thinking that will rule the day.

I cannot predict exactly what will be happening this year,
neither do I want to. I can tell you that you will continue
to see food prices rise - that is a given. However, the
things I have been writing about I see being major issues
both politically and privately by the year 2010. Just to
remind you that is three short years away. Anytime
thereafter will only be much more of the same.

One thing we should all be aware of is that neither
governments or industry will tell us the truth. They will do
all they can to prevent widespread panic and withholding
truth is the way they do it.

So it is in the hands of each of us. We must decide how we
are going to handle things. That is what this column is
really about. Bringing real information to you so you can
adjust as you go.

Let’s all hope 2007 brings us all we wish for and work for.

Happy New Year.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Oil on Troubled Waters: What is the reason we speak of
pacifying someone as "pouring oil on troubled waters"?

Because it's a scientific fact that oil poured on a rough
sea will lessen the waves. benjamin Franklin, on hearing
this Biblical phrase repeated, decided to test its literal
truth. He poured oil on the ocean and found the waves were
considerably reduced.

HA! HA! HA!

One day, Uncle Joe got fired from his construction job. His
nephew asked him what happened.

"You know what a foreman is?" he asked. "The one who stands
around and watches the other men work?"

"What's that got to do with it?" he asked.

"Well, he just got jealous of me," Uncle Joe explained.
"Everyone thought I was the foreman."

THE LAST LINE - - - - -

"When dealing with people, I generally take the obvious
approach. When someone says, 'This always happens to me
and that always happens to me. Why do these things
always happen to me?' I simply say, 'Beats me. I don't
know. All I know is that those kinds of things seem to
happen to people like you.'" -- Jim Rohn
