TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

What woman has had numerous plastic surgeries in order to
intentionally look like a "Barbie" doll?

How old was Martin Luther King Jr. when he was assassinated?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How long has plastic surgery been around?

Much longer than you would guess. A number of ancient
civilizations, including Egypt and Greece, practiced the
specialty, albeit without the modern technology we have now.
Written evidence cites medical treatment for facial injuries
more than 4,000 years ago. Physicians in ancient India were
utilizing skin grafts for reconstructive work as early as
800 BC. It wasn't until after the first World War, however,
that many advanced techniques were developed. Many soldiers
and civilians were terribly disfigured in combat by powerful
modern weapons and needed medical help. Never before had
physicians been required to treat so many and such extensive
facial and head injuries.

What is the most common plastic surgery? Face-lifts?

Liposuction is the most common COSMETIC procedure (including
with men), followed by breast augmentation and eyelid
surgery. However, much plastic surgery remains
reconstructive (to repair serious damage from burns,
injuries, and defects present at birth), as opposed to
cosmetic (breast jobs, tummy tucks, face-lifts, etc). The
most common reconstructive procedures are tumor removal,
hand surgery, and breast reconstruction.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

It's Your Choice

Do you really realize just how much choice you have in your
life? Every moment you are choosing. The trick is to make
those choices conscious, to be aware that you are actually
making a choice at each moment.

I was talking to one of my book editors the other day and he
asked me why I wrote that you choose your perceptions in
life. He wanted to know how I thought that was true. Well,
more accurately, he did not want to believe it was true and
was hoping to convince me otherwise!!

It takes maturity to take responsibility for your choices in
life—all of them. It’s much easier to find someone to blame
for what you do, what you think and how you feel. It’s
quicker, too.

The dictionary says that perception is ‘physical sensation
interpreted in the light of experience’. Wow! Your past
experience actually plays a part in how you see your world.
What a surprise! So, anything you hear, see, taste, touch
or smell can trigger a past memory or a past response.
Whether or not you allow it, though, is your choice. You
can change the way you see life at any minute.

You do choose what you pay attention to at every moment. Do
not let your pre-programming from past experiences determine
how you see your life now. That’s where the real choice in
life is!

Have you ever been in a new relationship that has great
potential for becoming a significant relationship? As you
get to know one another more deeply and the ‘first date’,
‘honeymoon’ phase dissipates, it sometimes happens that that
special person seems to react to some small thing in a way
that completely surprises you. For example, he or she might
display signs of jealousy when you have done nothing to
warrant it. There is an example of a ‘physical sensation
interpreted in the light of experience’. Your new partner
may very well be reacting to a way you looked at someone or
moved your body that they knew to mean flirting in their
past relationship. Now, they want to interpret it in the
same way in your new relationship. No! That’s not fair!

We need to approach each new relationship with an open mind
and a willingness to see and learn about this new partner,
boss, co-worker or friend with new eyes. Sure, you have
learned valuable lessons in the past that will help you make
good decisions, however, it is unfair to generalize the
behaviors of one person when meeting someone new.

Sometimes a person in your life makes some changes for the
positive. She is working hard to be different, to respond
differently, to improve an area of her life. Open yourself
to the possibility of seeing her differently. Give her the
space to change. Notice the changes. Both of you will
benefit.

Everything has the meaning that you give it. A driver cuts
in front of you on the freeway. One day, you can be angry
and curse the driver for being such a complete idiot.
Another day, you can simply say, ‘Oh, maybe, she’s late for
a very important appointment’ and let it go. That’s
choosing how you see things, your perception. The second
approach saves wear and tear on your energy, your nerves and
your sense of well-being.

One day a colleague at work is quiet, uncommunicative and
sullen. You can decide that that person is childish, angry,
pouting or difficult. You may then ignore him or treat him
coldly. Or, you might decide that something very difficult
has happened to them and ask if you can help in some way.
You may simply be compassionate towards them and give them
the space and peace to recover. It’s a choice.

Life goes along much better when you take responsibility for
your choices. You will not be looking for someone to blame
for your mood, your responses or your actions. You choose
the meaning things have and, in that light, you choose your
responses. You are powerful. Every moment of every day you
are deciding how to view your world. Exercise your power to
choose. See things positively. It’s your choice.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson

Stress And How It Affects Your Physical Body
A Few Ideas To Enhance Your Fitness Level.
PART 2 of 9

Stress affects your body negatively. For that reason, you really
don't want it to "hang around" for any length of time. Many
people say it's inevitable. I don't agree. I think you can learn
to behave in ways that protect your body from long term damage.
It isn't easy or fast, but it's doable. And once you think
through a few different concepts or change your perceptions, you
can move from a frozen or paralyzed state into taking control of
your future. In fact, it's really the only way you can protect
yourself, but most of us have to discover this for ourselves.
And usually we do this in isolation. Start by asking yourself
"how can I" instead of just accepting your situation. Really
believe you could possibly make some changes in how life around
you happens. Ways will appear. Imagine taking a tiny risk and
achieving one small new goal and then taking another and another
and winning each time. Would this not contribute to your sense
of freedom? And it would certainly lower your stress level.

Let's look at this from an anatomical viewpoint. If you feel
totally relaxed, all your body systems flow relatively evenly
and perform as they are designed to do. Your heart is relaxed
and it pumps in a nice, calm manner. It sends blood to all parts
of the body carrying life-supporting nutrients and oxygen. No
strain. No stress. Now just for a second, clench your fist as if
you are angry. Or what is much more common, act as if you are
fearful! Feel how your whole hand is clenched. Now feel your
entire body in the same stiffened manner. Check yourself...body
tight, hands clenched, facial frown. Your entire body is out of
its natural alignment. And you rightfully say "so what"?
Essentially, this misalignment, in all parts of your body causes
"dis-ease" or this "un-relaxed state". This causes many of our
degenerative conditions. These are abnormal.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

Cloning Is Banking On Your Stupidity

Wouldn’t you know it - commerce and industry are now
pursuing the cloning of farm animals - BIG TIME.

That’s right and the very moment someone goes against them
you know what they do - they say they can now breed cows
that cannot get mad cow disease. You know what this reminds
me of? - California years ago.

You got it. California years ago had a plebiscite held on
the matter of reducing taxes by 50 percent. The entire process
before the actual vote took a year and a half. During that
year you should have heard officials crying the blues
everyday about how the police service was going to be cut,
how the fire service was going to be cut, how most health
services were going to be cut. All the while no one
mentioned how any budgets were going to get cut or how many
worthless programs were going to get cut.

Guess what. The good citizens of California voted for the
tax cut anyway and you know what? - Not one policeman lost
his job, not one fireman neither one health care worker.
Some unnecessary programs got cut, the government tightened
up its belt and California not only survived but thrived.

This story is the same thing. The innuendo is if we don’t
let industry go ahead and clone our meat production we’re
going to be plagued with mad cow disease. Have you ever
heard anything more ridiculous? You watch, we’re going to
hear about a lot of things we could catch unless we let them
clone our meat.

In the meantime this is just one more thing to take our
attention away from a future that will be dramatically
affected by global warming, so much so that many of us may
have a hard time buying groceries. So fear not. Cloning
won’t be going anywhere in time for us to really worry
about. There will be much more important issues on our plate
very soon..

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Paddywhack: Why do we call a spank a "paddywhack"?

The Irish call St. Patrick, their patron saint, Padraig -
and so an Irishman is called a "Paddy". Irish comedians in
the English theater were very partial tot he "slapstick" -
and so a "paddywhack" is a harmless slap on the buttocks in
jest.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

Leadership appears to be the art of getting others to
want to do something you are convinced should be done.
Vance Packard (1914-1996)

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

A police officer came upon a terrible wreck where the driver
and passenger had been killed. As he looked upon the
wreckage a little monkey came out of the brush and hopped
around the crashed car. The officer looked down at the
monkey and said "I wish you could talk."

The monkey looked up at the officer and shook his head up
and down.

"You can understand what I'm
saying?" asked the officer.

Again, the monkey shook his head up and down.

"Well, did you see this?"

"Yes," motioned the monkey.

"What happened?"

The monkey pretended to have a can in his hand and turned it
up by his mouth.

"They were drinking?" asked the officer.

The monkey shakes his head "Yes."

"What else?"

The monkey pinched his fingers together and held them to his
mouth.

"They were smoking marijuana?"

The monkey shakes his head "Yes."

"What else?"

The monkey motioned "kissing."

"They were kissing, too?" asked the astounded officer.

The monkey shakes his head "Yes."

"Now wait, you're saying your owners were drinking, smoking
and kissing before they wrecked."

The monkey shakes his head "Yes."

"What were you doing during all this?"

"Driving" motioned the monkey.
