What is a "bellwether"?

What does "quid pro quo" mean?

ANSWERS TO LAST TRIVIA - - - -

What was Martin Luther King Jr.'s name when he was born?

A little-known fact: Martin Luther King Jr. was born MICHAEL
Luther King Jr. He was later renamed Martin. The civil
rights champion was the son of schoolteacher Alberta King
and Baptist minister Michael Luther King.

Is a "quantum leap" always a big one?

Not really. The term is taken from the physics term "quantum
jump." The quantum jump happens when an electron moves from
one orbit in an atom to another, either losing or taking on
a photon in the process. The change is actually the SMALLEST
that can occur in the energy of an atom. But it IS a very
abrupt change. A quantum leap is therefore an abrupt or
unexpected change or step, especially in method,
information, or knowledge. It can refer to a sudden insight
into a problem coming from an unforeseen direction or an act
that is a radical departure from earlier acts.

North Koreans rally for nuclear program
By KWANG-TAE KIM, Associated Press Writer
Thu Jan 4, 8:37 AM ET

SEOUL, South Korea - Tens of thousands of North Koreans,
including high level officials, rallied Thursday in the
communist country's capital to defend their government's
right to have nuclear weapons, state-run media reported.

"We have nothing to be scared about as we have a strong war
deterrent," a North Korean woman said at the massive rally
in central Pyongyang, the North's Central TV reported.

The communist regime, which conducted its first atomic test
in October, often refers to its nuclear weapons program as a
necessary deterrent to the threat of a U.S. attack — an
accusation Washington has repeatedly denied.

The rally, which drew about 100,000 North Koreans —
including Parliament speaker Choe Thae Bok and the vice
president of Parliament, Yang Hyong Sop — was held to
express public support for Pyongyang's New Year's message,
Central TV said.

In a New Year's message on Monday, the North vowed to
strengthen its defense capabilities as it celebrated its
nuclear power, and called for efforts to revitalize its
sickly economy.

North Korea hailed its Oct. 9 nuclear test as "an auspicious
event in the national history." The test stoked
international tensions and drew U.N. sanctions.

The New Year's message also urged the North's 1.1
million-member military, the backbone of North Korean leader
Kim Jong Il's rule, to defend the country at all costs.

The rally participants pledged to defend Kim with their
lives as they held aloft large pictures of the leader and
his late father, founding President Kim Il-Sung, according
to the video.

The North usually holds a massive rally every year in
support of a New Year message, but it doesn't have "any
special meaning," a South Korean official said, asking not
to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to
the media.

The participants also vowed to embark on a campaign to build
a prosperous and powerful nation while making a dramatic
effort to improve the standard of living.

North Korea is one of the world's poorest countries. It has
relied on foreign handouts to feed its 23 million people
since the mid-1990s, when natural disasters and
mismanagement devastated its economy and led to a famine
estimated to have killed some 2 million people.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Stress And How It Affects Your Physical Body
A Few Ideas To Enhance Your Fitness Level.
PART 5 of 9

In a conscientious, knowledgeable decision-making process, you
need to understand the concept of "cause and effect". Along with
this goes the right for you to have boundaries. These are rules
for different situations: positive and negative ones. They are
decisions you have already made that won't violate your personal
values and intentions. You will really be out of sync with your
relaxed and healthy state without them. Can you imagine how your
body reacts to being confronted with a request to clean a
storage unit or go to a warehouse store when it's the very last
thing you want to do? And unless you have a lot of confidence
and courage, you will be torn between your desires and theirs.
And who looses? You do because chances are you don't want to
upset anyone. If you go home, you will be angry and very tired
and upset (mostly with yourself). If you don't help, you may
feel guilty and a bit fearful of any unpleasantness that might
follow. Neither way do you win. Do this a few times, and you can
picture how stressed your body is on a fairly frequent basis.
But as you can't say anything, it simply eats away at you
silently...a good start for major health challenges. This is
"cause and effect" in real life.

So what is the answer or part of a solution? I suggest you make
some rules for yourself and set some boundaries. It's a given
that anyone will try to get around them, but with time,
confidence, and consistency, they won't succeed: you will. So if
we go back to the example of the Friday afternoon cleaning
"proposal", it could be handled by offering to help the
following week when you are prepared. Then you could allow
enough time and wear proper clothing. You still haven't turned
them down flat, but you made a choice that looked after your
needs as well as their desires. You would also feel much more in
control. That would eliminate a lot of frustration. Furthermore,
you would retain the goodwill of the friend or co-worker.
Recognize too, that sometimes you get set up for these things
just to see how far you can be pushed. In the case of your
spouse's brand new gift certificate and the need for your
expertise, you know all that will keep till the following week
at least. Maybe you could incorporate it into a small family
celebration or by all doing something together. A happier and
energetic "you" would contribute more joy than the tired wreck
who needed a chance to rest its feet.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Misery Loves Comapny - So Does Stupidity

I guess they were passing out food the day the press reports
tens of thousands rallied in favor of North Korea having its
own nuclear weapons. If not then the world has clearly gone
mad.

Can you imagine a country that has depended on food gifts
from other nations for well over a decade, a country that
takes that food and sells it to the rich while keeping its
masses, millions, starving saying we have millions
supporting our plan for nuclear weapons. The only thing that
could possibly have been happening that day is the
government decided to make free food available under banners
that hyped the nuclear program.

Nothing that comes out of North Korea is to be believed if
they are the source.

Iran is becoming just as bad. The blind race to see who can
build nuclear weapons is clearly the most deadly and stupid
race of all. Conjuring up imaginary threats serves to give
them “official” sanction but the stupidity shows through
nonetheless. Iran claims Israel a threat. Israel does
nothing except protect itself against the continual
aggression of its Arab neighbors. If they quit attacking
Israel goes home. But Arab leaders are too preoccupied with
their own importance to see this.

In the meantime these two nations spoken words make them a
continual threat. And each has shown themselves to be
unstable, which means they are a threat.

Oh well! If they want to play such high stakes games the
price they and the world will pay will be great.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

A-1. Why do we use "A-1" to mean "the very best"?

Because when the Marine insurance firms of London started
the association later to become known as "Lloyds," they also
started a register of ships and shipping in which the
condition of the ships and their cargo was noted. The ships
were graded by letter; the cargoes by number. "A" meant the
ship itself was perfect; "1" that the cargo was likewise
perfect.

Animal Super Bowl

During the Super Bowl, there was another football game of
note between the big animals and the little animals. The big
animals were crushing little animals and at half-time, the
coach made a passionate speech to rally the little animals.

At the start of the second half the big animals had the
ball. The first play, the elephant got stopped for no gain.
The second play, the rhino was stopped for no gain. On third
down, the hippo was thrown for a 5-yard loss.

The defense huddled around the coach and he asked excitedly,
"Who stopped the elephant?"

"I did," said the centipede.

"Who stopped the rhino?"

"Uh, that was me too," said the centipede.

"And how about the hippo? Who hit him for a 5 yard loss?"

"Well, that was me as well," said the centipede.

"So where were you during the first half?" demanded the
coach.

"Well," said the centipede, "I was having my ankles taped."
