TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Is it true that hair is "dead"?

Someone told me that potatoes are poisonous. Is this true?

ANSWERS TO LAST TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why doesn't the hair on my cat keep growing then?

Cats would HATE it if they had to get haircuts. Fortunately
for them, length of hair is determined by genetics and their
genes call for relatively short hair. YOUR hair can't keep
growing indefinitely either. In some places, like on the
arms and legs, your hair remains fairly short. It's true
that you can grow the hair on your head to quite a length,
but even then you're limited by your genes. Rapunzel,
remember, was just a fairy-tale princess and hair long
enough to make a rope ladder for a prince remains a fantasy.
Who would want to wash it, anyway?

I've heard that all mammals have hair. Do whales have hair?

Hair IS one of the defining characteristics of a mammal,
useful for insulating the body and protecting it from cold.
Whales, however, are nearly hairless. Notice, I said,
NEARLY. Hair is actually often present in the whale fetus,
but is lost in adults. Their insulation is provided by fat,
rather than hair.

Scientists prepare to move Doomsday Clock forward

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The keepers of the "Doomsday Clock"
plan to move its hands forward next Wednesday to reflect
what they call worsening nuclear and climate threats to the
world.
The symbolic clock, maintained by the Bulletin of Atomic
Scientists, currently is set at seven minutes to midnight,
with midnight marking global catastrophe.

The group did not say in which direction the hands would
move. But in a news release previewing an event next
Wednesday, they said the change was based on "worsening
nuclear, climate threats" to the world.

"The major new step reflects growing concerns about a
'Second Nuclear Age' marked by grave threats, including:
nuclear ambitions in Iran and North Korea, unsecured nuclear
materials in Russia and elsewhere, the continuing
'launch-ready' status of 2,000 of the 25,000 nuclear weapons
held by the U.S. and Russia, escalating terrorism, and new
pressure from climate change for expanded civilian nuclear
power that could increase proliferation risks," the release
reads.

The clock was last pushed forward by two minutes to seven
minutes to midnight in 2002 amid concerns about the
proliferation of nuclear, biological and other weapons and
the threat of terrorism.

When it was created by the magazine's staff in 1947, it was
initially set at seven minutes to midnight and has moved 17
times since then.

It was as close as two minutes to midnight in 1953 following
U.S. and Soviet hydrogen bomb tests, and as far away as 17
minutes to midnight in 1991 after the superpowers reached
agreement on a nuclear arms reductions.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Drug Interactions Or Side Effects:
Not To Be Taken Lightly Or
Ignored Altogether
PART 1 of 3

This past weekend I spent hours doing research on drug
interactions for a lovely young lady of 73! She was on two
medications for one of her conditions and three for another.
Then she was also on something to help her prevent bone density
loss. Our concern for her was the possible side effects and
interactions. Initially she went to her doctor to get some help
with her dizziness. Eventually she wasn't much better. In fact
she thought she was worse off than before.

I started my usual search in Medline http://medlineplus.gov/
I added the drug name and quickly moved to the next stage.
I always go to the "Medical Encyclopedia" section. It's the easiest
to understand. My first mistake was to do the search for the one
drug I wasn't familiar with. I thought I knew the others fairly well
and felt I could think the "connections" through without doing
much more searching. However what I found with the first search
really concerned me. Consequently, I did very careful searches
for all the others. Here's why I know it was a "mistake".

If I had checked the other drugs first, I would have concluded
this one would be fine. But having done the unknown one first,
and finding it to be labeled something along the lines of being
the corrective measure for such drug overdoses, I now really
read every word very carefully. I would have been lulled into a
false sense of security and totally missed the cautionary note.
Not good. Good lesson for me to learn.

I found some disturbing results. I am not a pharmacist and I
don't choose to be one. But I am having some difficulty knowing
who to send people to for this kind of professional support
or interpretation. The problem may lie in the fact that clinics
are often the main health providers. You frequently don't get
the same doctor or nurse clinician.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

The Doomsday Clock - what an interesting concept.

It has no real reality to it yet it is highly symbolic and
may well tell more than we wish to see.

Courtesy of global warming, wars, terrorism and the like it
appears as if the clock will be moved ahead today,
shortening our expectations that the world will be fine
until 2040.

Even if 2040 is of some significant importance we must
remember that is only 30 short years away.

However, don’t believe the 2040 time line. Things are moving
much faster than that and maybe this is the point the
scientists want to make.

Anyone living life as usual today is making a mistake. Life
is no longer usual and you will be seeing the truth of that
statement long before 2040.

My personal expectations are that by the year 2010 we will
already be long embroiled into the problems and difficulties
imposed upon us by global warming. The entire thing is
accelerating at a rate the world is not seeing.

Consider - we are not able today to feed the world. We no
longer produce enough food to do that. Yet the population is
increasing by approximately 20,000,000 a month or
240,000,000 a year or 1 billion every four to five years.

Global warming, additionally, is taking away arable land by
tens of thousands of hectares every year.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see where this problem
is going. Figure it out for yourself..

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Faction. Where did we get the word "faction"

From the Romans. The charioteers who performed in the Circus
Maximus were divided into four different parties and the
Latin word for "party" is factio. Each "faction" wore a
different color and originally represented a different
season of the year - although with time the number of
"factions" was increased to six. Civil war between the "blue
faction" and the "green faction" in 532 A.D. led to the
current meaning of "opposing political groups."

"Most people spend more time planning a vacation or a
party than they spend planning their lives." -- Denis

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Three railroad workers, a Chinese man, an Italian, and a
redneck, are all sitting down to lunch.

The Chinese man says, "If I get another egg roll in my
lunch, I'll kill myself."

The Italian guy says, "If I get another slice of pizza, I'll
kill myself."

The redneck says, "Iffin I get another ham hock, I'll kill
myself."

The next day, all three men get the same lunches, so they
throw themselves in front of an oncoming train. At the
funeral the Chinese man's wife says, "If only I hadn't
packed an egg roll that day."

The Italian guy's wife says, "If only I hadn't packed a
slice of pizza that day."

"Don't look at me," says the redneck's wife. "He done packed
his own vittles."

"Being rich isn't about money. Being rich is a state of
mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have,
will never be free enough to take time to stop and eat
the heart of the watermelon. And some of us will be
rich without ever being more than a paycheck ahead of
the game." -- Harvey B. Mackay
