But isn't it also said that potato skins are nutritious?
Yes. Potato skins contain lots of fiber as well as some
minerals, such as calcium and zinc, that your body needs.
Potato peels also contain necessary vitamins, so the very
small danger of being poisoned by a potato is offset by the
good things potato skins provide. It's NOT true, however,
that potato skins contain ALL the vitamins a potato has to
offer. (My mother always claimed they did.) Vitamins are
pretty evenly distributed through the whole potato, UNLESS
the potato is baked. In baked potatoes, the peel really does
contain almost all of the vitamins because baking causes the
nutrients to congregate in the peel.
How about apple skins? Are they safe to eat?
Wash off the pesticides and eat those apples skins! They're
a great source of fiber and they DON'T have glycoalkaloids.
However, avoid eating apple seeds! They contain the makings
of cyanide, another lethal poison. Once again, though,
you're pretty safe. To get sick, you'd have to eat more than
a whole cup full of just seeds.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
------------------------------------
A Good Idea
One of the great challenges in life is to stay focused and
not to go madly off in all directions. It makes so much
sense, doesn't it? How is it, then, that most people do not
find it easy to stay on track with their goals? After all,
they chose their goals, so they must be appealing!
There are many answers to it, no doubt. The important thing
for today is to find your particular answer to that
question. Is it difficult for you to stay focused on your
goals? How much prompting does it take for you to abandon
what you are doing and do something else? What is it about
that "something else" that is so appealing? What is it
about your goal that is not appealing enough, perhaps? Big
questions.
Avoidance can be a big issue, can't it? Often we call it
procrastination, however, it really is avoidance. When
there is a task to do, we often find ourselves deciding to
clean our desk, make unnecessary phone calls, or, even
counting all the staples in that little box just to be sure
there really are 1,000. It is often a good idea to take
stock when this happens...and I do not mean of those little
staples! We want to do things we love to do. We'll even do
some very unpleasant things to achieve a desired result...if
this were not true, who would undergo cosmetic dentistry or
liposuction?
Walt Disney had some good advice. He said, "Get a good idea
and stick with it. Dog it, and work at it until it's done
and done right." So, the point is, if you are focused on
what you REALLY want, you may have to remind yourself that
that task that seems unappealing is really your ticket to
your dreams. Pay for it!
For today, reaffirm your goals. Make sure they truly
reflect what you want. Sit with each of your goals--read it
out loud, close your eyes, see how your body reacts to each.
Goals that truly light you up and/or contribute to your
sense of well-being and peace are the ones to focus on. Keep
the others for another time...or release them completely.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - by Karin Henderson
Drug Interactions Or Side Effects:
Not To Be Taken Lightly Or
Ignored Altogether
PART 3 of 3
I wrote an article a while back about the "rebound" effect of certain
medications. It simply means that in some drug products, if you
take more than the prescribed daily dose, the drug works against
you! All these drugs, taken independently, look pretty innocent.
You can probably tolerate the side effects without too much
trouble. But taken in groups, they pose a potentially-serious
problem.
I honestly don't know who to send you or my friend to,
except the Medline link. You must do some very detailed research
for yourself. It is the same caution I give for surgical
consents. Read ALL the possible side effects and complications.
If you can live with them, go ahead. But if they are too
debilitating, you MUST ask for more information and a second
opinion.
By law, this information has to be included. Someone
has to have ended up with these negative results. For instance I
spoke with someone tonight who had a surgical procedure for
which the surgeon gave her a 90% success rate. So 10% of the
people who had this surgery had a failure. If this is you, can
you live with being one of that 10%?
It's the same with drugs. Someone has to have these side effects.
Or interactions. In my friends' case, all her drugs had similar
warnings, yet she was prescribed all of them. Then I realised
why the last drug, the newest one, was prescribed. Why she
wasn't taken off any, I don't know. I used to send people to their
pharmacist for a "profile", but I don't think they are doing those
any longer.
One of my students printed off 9 PAGES of fine print for her
medical condition. Needless to say, she didn't understand most
of it despite having a medical terminology background.
The other sad thing I notice, no one offers any non-drug
treatment suggestions. My friend has sinus congestion. It would
be very easy to show her how to clean them quickly and without
drugs. Here is a copy of this article if you want to try it.
mailto:sinusclear@rr-email.com
So in the end you are the one person who has your own interest
at heart and health. Please read everything you can about your
condition(s). Ask detailed questions. Write out all the drugs
you are on and side effects, including any you may be having.
Make it as easy as possible for your medical practitioner to
give you the best service possible. It may seem a bit
"redundant" if you have a great specialist, but hopefully they
won't mind. And really appreciate those doctors who know your
pharmaceutical history. But do start to take full responsibility
for your own health and that of your family. Drugs have a very
important role to play in our lives, but they should not be
fooled with or taken for granted.
What did I finally do with my friend? I sent a lot of information
of my "discoveries" to her family and suggested they study
this with her. Then, if they could, to please go with her to her
next doctor's visit. Hear what is being suggested. If another
drug is to be part of the discussion, ask for interactions and
possible side effects, and how this would fit into her present
medical profile.
Most people don't believe there is "power" in taking someone
to your appointments. There is. Use it.!

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

I hope I’m wrong!
That’s right, I hope I’m wrong.
As I read the news I see more and more evidence global
warming is taking a toll already. Pacific islands are
disappearing. Water coming on shore and leaving pools that
breed mosquitos are spreading disease. All this is happening
right now.
I, just now, saw a report of where Antarctica is melting
very fast. Attention has been focused on the Arctic but
Antarctica is also enjoying rapidly retreating glaciers. The
combination of the two areas losing their ice will create
terrific havoc on the rest of the world.
In addition, drought or sufficiently higher temperatures are
threatening the crops in the U.S.
All the while the governments are sitting quiet, afraid to
do anything to upset industries chance to profit.
I see reports only once in a while and many I have to dig
for. All the while the news is full of life as usual. It is
as if no ever heard of global warming or the problems it is
creating.
I know the problem will have to be faced sooner or later. It
will literally come up and slap us in the face. Why is there
no planning, preparation going on? Where are the leaders to
lead the way?
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Hair of the Dog. Why is taking a morning-after drink as a
pickup called taking a "hair of the dog that bit you"?
Because the ancients believed that one of the best cures for
hydrophobia or any other disease you might obtain from a dog
bite, consisted of taking a "hair of the dog that bit you"
and placing it in the wound.

HA! HA! HA!
Man goes to see the Rabbi. "Rabbi, something terrible is
happening and I have to talk to you about it."
The Rabbi asked, "What's wrong?"
The man replied, "My wife is poisoning me."
The Rabbi, very surprised by this, asks, "How can that be?"
The man then pleads, "I'm telling you, I'm certain she's
poisoning me, what should I do?"
The Rabbi then offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk to her,
I'll see what I can find out and I'll let you know."
A week later the Rabbi calls the man and says,
"Well, I spoke to your wife. I spoke to her on the phone for
three hours. You want my advice?"
The man said yes and the Rabbi replied, "Take the poison!"
