Did potatoes originate in Ireland?

Actually, no. Potatoes were first cultivated by the Incas in
the Peruvian Andes. Spanish conquistadors introduced
potatoes into Europe, but they were grown at first as a
novelty, and were not eaten. (Europeans were a little afraid
to eat them thanks to their membership in the nightshade
family.) By the 18th century, however, Europeans gave them a
try and potatoes became very popular, especially in Ireland.

Could a person running from the law seek sanctuary in a
church?

A fugitive may have been able to use a church as a refuge
from arrest in the past, but no longer. The principle of
sanctuary derives from Old English law and was recognized by
many countries for a long time as a way of protecting those
persecuted for moral or political crimes. However, that
principle was pretty much abolished everywhere in the 18th
century and a church today provides no legal protection. So
keep running.

High Expectations!

Three men, a doctor, an accountant and a lawyer are dead and
they appear in front of St Peter.

St Peter tells them that they have to answer one question in
order to get to Heaven.

He looks at the doctor and asks, "There was a movie that was
made about a ship that sank after hitting an iceberg, what
was its name?"

The doctor answers, "The Titanic" and he is sent through.

He then looks at the accountant and says, "How many people
died in that ship?" Fortunately the accountant had just
watched the movie and he answers, "1500!".

St Peter sends him through and then finally turns to the
lawyer and commands, in a very heavy voice, "Name them!".

Wow! Is that a high expectation or what? I know this is a
lawyer joke but look behind the scenes. It makes me think of
real life. That is to say we often face those kind of things
as we go through life.

What I'm talking about it that the better you are at
something the more likely the world around you will have
very high expectations of you. I know that to be true in the
world of graphic arts. The better you are the more work gets
piled on.

The way you react is up to you. Usually you are overburdened
and folks keep piling on more. It is a source of frustration
until you realize it comes to you because folks know they
can rely on you. That is what is really behind it.

There is another condition where folks have high
expectations. The condition is where those who seek the most
for their dollar keep demanding your attention over one
sale. As always it is wise to do your best to satisfy your
customer. Yet this is one area where sooner or later you
will have to draw the demands to a close. Your call.

And, finally there is one more condition where I know high
expectations are true. I know a friend who loaned some money
to an acquaintance. The man paid it back and all was well.
In the meantime my friend invested all his money into what
he considered a good investment. Then the acquaintance came
along and asked for another loan, to which my friend
responded "no" because he had no more free cash. The
acquaintance became immediately angry, thinking my friend no
longer trusted him. He gave no consideration that it was my
friends business what he does with his money.

Lastly, there is a law you must know. "He to whom much is
given, much is expected." It means that if you are doing
well, others around you will expect you to aid them in some
way. It means that if you are talented you will be expected
to use those talents often for mankind. You might be like
the singer Enrico Caruso who once told his wife that yes he
wanted to go with her, but the voice had to be somewhere
else.

So what is the point? Learn these demands will be made of
you and set yourself a standard approach to them. It might
mean you must be very organized. It might mean you must
learn to give. It might mean you must learn to say no. It
could mean you must learn humility. Think on these things
and you will thereafter be able to handle...

I love the idea how police are trained to detect counterfeit
money. They are taught to recognize it by spending the vast
majority of their time seeing and feeling the legal bills. Once
they become familiar with the good ones, they are innocently
introduced to the counterfeit bills. These are now easy to spot.
The student is now confidently recognizing the real ones and the
fake ones stand out. Why is this important? How can you fix
something if you don't know how it works or what it is supposed
to do?

You want to learn the truth about your body. What it's all about
(anatomy). How it's meant to function (physiology). Once you put
this information together, it will then be much easier to
recognize "ill" or negative results. Your corrective action will
present itself. Be confident in its functions. In the vast
majority of people, the vital organs are of similar size. They
are definitely of similar actions or behaviors. So consider
yourself normal and learn to use this information. It can make
your life either very, very good or very bad. The choice is
yours and no one else's. So often we blame others for our
results. But in our bodies, the only person who can possibly be
responsible is that individual. No one forces you to drink a
super sugar-loaded drinks or high salt content fries. Someone
may cajole or shame you, but you do the swallowing. Let me
encourage you to at least become aware of this "distinction". As
part of this anatomy and physiology "lesson", I am also
mentioning the connection to the aging process and how it
differs from the degenerative process. These are important
issues to learn and then to apply if you wish to live a healthy
lifestyle.

Doomsday Clock - - -

I see we still have five minutes left before the Doomsday
Clock hits midnight.

They bumped it ahead two minutes today.

It seems scientists are quite worried about the prospects of
nuclear war. They don’t like what they see in North Korea
and Iran. Neither does the rest of the world, but this makes
me wonder if, once more, they know things our government
isn’t telling us.

These men and women are, after all, learned men and women,
many of whom have positions that enable them to have
information most of us don’t get. Am I reading more into
this thing than there really is?

I have a very healthy mistrust of governments and industry
when it comes to telling the public the real truth. Is this
group saying something we should know about?

I really don’t know but for me, I’m going to err on the side
of the scientists.

No. The word is Greek and at first an "idiot" was just a
