What is a grand jury?
A grand jury is a group of people that are selected and
sworn in by a court, just like trial juries. But the job of
grand juries is not to determine the guilt or innocence of a
particular criminal defendant. Rather, grand juries listen
to evidence and decide if someone SHOULD be charged with a
crime. They decide whether formal charges (an "indictment")
should be brought. Grand juries' make their decisions
according to majority vote. Unlike regular trial juries,
they are made of more than twelve members, may sit only one
or two days a week (but for longer periods, up to a year in
some cases), and may actually investigate, either as part of
bringing criminal charges or as a purely separate function.
Often, a grand jury hears many cases in one day.
What is a sonic boom?
A sonic boom (also called a "sonic bang") is a sound
resembling an explosion produced when a shock wave forms at
the nose of an aircraft traveling at supersonic speed. You
hear the sonic boom from the ground (a great way to explain
unexplained noises if you live near a military base or an
airfield.) An aircraft flying at "Mach 1" produces sonic
booms as it approaches the speed of sound.

Iran motivated by fear
Tehran's pursuit of nuclear capabilities stems from fear,
not hatred
Prof. Dror Zeevi
Published:
01.21.07, 17:32
The Iranian regime is indeed driven by messianic religious
ideology and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is set on bringing about
Israel's destruction. And yes, Iran is seeking to achieve
nuclear capability and is trying to fool the world. And yes,
the Islamic republic supports Hizbullah with weapons,
know-how, training and funds. But however severe this may
be, it does not attest to his intent to use nuclear weapons
against Israel.
The Iranian need for nuclear capability stems more from fear
than it does from hatred. Hostile Israel has nuclear arms;
so do Sunni Pakistan and the US - a superpower situated on
the Iranian border from the east and west - as does Russia,
which borders Iran on the north. Nuclear weapons would
enable Tehran to face these threats as an equal and to
conduct itself as a regional superpower.
In any discussion aimed at looking into Iran's intentions,
it should be noted that throughout the Islamic Republic's
years of existence, since 1979, it has not initiated a
single war.
The war against Iraq was forced upon it in 1980 by Saddam
Hussein. The Iranians didn't invade Afghanistan, in spite of
their fear of the radical Taliban regime. They didn't invade
the south of Iraq, and they didn't try to expand their
border to the north during the downfall of the former USSR.
They were smart enough to resolve their conflicts with the
Persian Gulf states by diplomatic means.
The Iranians have always displayed political wisdom and a
realistic understanding of the limits of power. Moreover,
besides Israel and Turkey, Iran is the closest to being a
democratic country in the Middle East. Iran is not an
absolute dictatorship, and its rulers are also subjected to
the rule of law.
Iranian politics have a sophisticated mechanism of balances
and restraints to curb the power of its leaders. Iranian
President Ahmadinejad is not the state's sovereign. He is
obliged to adhere to the rule of the supreme leader
(currently Ali Khamenei), and he too is elected by the
Assembly of Experts, a group of religious clerics elected
through national elections.
The Iranians appreciate Israel's nuclear capability. They
are well aware that Israel could deal them a severe blow if
attacked. They also know all too well that the US would not
hesitate to strike heavily at Iran if an Israeli response
does not suffice.
Despite these arguments (recently raised by Bernard Lewis)
regarding messianic extremism – namely that they would be
wiling to sacrifice themselves in the process - the Iranians
have no intention of bringing about the total destruction of
Iran by their own volition, particularly at the dawn of a
new age and at the reappearance of the Imam Mahdi.
The dark side
Fear, said Master Yoda in Star Wars, leads to the dark side.
This is true when it concerns Iran's need to develop nuclear
weapons, and perhaps heaven forbid, use them. This is no
less true where Israel is concerned in its need to boost its
security with a preventative strike due to fear of an
Iranian bomb.
Such a preventative strike can only lead to a harsh, all-out
war in the region that would ruin the world economy, and
Israel would likely suffer heavy losses. Instead of striking
a blow, we would do well to seek ways of calming Israeli and
Iranian fears.
Statesmen are evaluated by their boldness. Israel's nuclear
ambiguity policy has provided it with a protective umbrella
for close to 50 years. Today, in wake of the complex
challenge presented by Iran, it is time to rethink the
country's nuclear arsenal, and try to use its existence in a
way that would be most beneficial.
The Israeli government should make a proposal to the
international community whereby it would be willing to place
its nuclear program under international inspection for 20
years, at the end of which it would reexamine the issue.
This would be subject to all states in the region, including
Iran and Pakistan, accepting the same rules of supervision
without limitation, and halting development of any nuclear
weapons.
The objective of such a move would not only be aimed at
reaching a compromise and preventing Iran from developing
nuclear arms, but also at accelerating processes for
initiating regime change. It is common knowledge that the
rift between the regime and the Iranian people is growing.
There is evidence that the regime is using the excuse of
nuclear injustice in order to enlist remaining popular
support. An Israeli statement regarding its readiness for a
compromise on this matter would prove to the Iranian public
that there's not much in the regime's arguments which in
turn would accelerate its demise.

Eastern Studies at Ben Gurion University

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson
Anatomy And Physiology (A&P)
The Make Up Of Your Body And
How It Functions
PART 3 of 9
Do you ever look at pictures in medical books or sites and
wonder why the patient is always facing to the front, in an
upright position? That's called the anatomical position. From
that viewpoint, everything is identified. So a medical person
anywhere in the world can relate to the picture or person. It
allows everyone to determine how "deviant" the situation is from
the normal. Everyone in the medical community studies this in
detail. It is the roadmap for their decisions. Each must learn
and understand and then apply this knowledge. The truth is the
truth. And remember that when a health care professional is
checking you in person, they are facing you. Same as the picture
person. So the doctor's "left" is actually your "right". They
will immediately "translate" this to the correct side. There are
also imaginary lines drawn all over your body. They describe
different parts of the body in quadrants or planes. Each has a
specific meaning. So if you directed me to a pain in your left
upper quadrant, I would know what structures lie underneath that
point. And cavities ("hollow" or "unoccupied" spaces) exist in
your body. They are not solely holes in your teeth. Everyone
has an anterior and a posterior side: front and back. Because
everyone's anatomy is virtually identical, you can see how
quickly someone can make a medical assumption. Granted once in
while someone has an anomaly or an unusual position or no organ
at all but here we are only dealing with the normal anatomy for
the general population.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Fear Is Never The Father Of Good Decisions.
When will man learn that fear is never the father of good
decisions?
The Cover Story today shows how Iran is reacting to
circumstances around them and what their motivations are.
Fear will only bring forth the thing it fears.
However, I have a question for you. Israel has had nuclear
weapons for many, many years. How come Iran is only becoming
afraid now?
In fact why, suddenly, is the rest of the world responding
fearfully?
Do you get my point? All these weapons have been around for
many years in the hands of those who presently have them and
they have never been even threatened as a deterrent to war.
Why is everyone responding with fear? Why do they need the
bomb now, when nothing is different than yesterday?
I am making the suggestion to you that something else is
happening. I am suggesting that for some reason the “vibes”
of the world have changed. We have been “charged” with these
fears, but not wisdom.
Greed is leading the way. The U.S. is no less fearful than
any other nation. They may boast and strut but underneath
they fear others letting loose a firestorm. Their reaction
to
the Chinese ability to bring down satellites is most
interesting in this regard. I’ll bet it has the war mongers
in the Pentagon just scrambling for new and better weapons.
One day the U.S. will wake up and find the world no longer
has faith in the U.S. dollar. The world will want payment in
other currency or goods, or services. That day will be the
end of U.S. belligerence. Then they will have to negotiate
on terms nearing equality. That is a position the U.S. is
not familiar with. Let us all hope that by that day wisdom
prevails.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Kangaroo: how did the "kangaroo" get its name?
Captain James Cook, who discovered Australia, asked the
tribesmen of the Endeavor River region the name of the
animal. They answered "Kangaroo." Whether that was the name
of the animal itself or just an answer signifying "I don't
know" is something that we don't know.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
When we grow old, there can only be one regret: not to
have given enough of ourselves.

HA! HA! HA!
A new jail warden was being shown through the jailhouse by
the old warden.
Soon, after making rounds around the rest of the jail, they
get to the cafeteria. In one corner, he sees a group of
elderly men laughing hysterically.
Interested, he watches them while the older warden gets his
food. One of the men shouts out "63!" and the entire table
bursts out laughing. The new warden is totally baffled by
the behavior of them. "74!", again a chorus of guffaws ring
out.
The old warden comes back to the table where the new warden
sits staring, and the new warden asks "What are those
elderly men doing."
The old warden smirks, and says, "Oh, those are the life
timers. They've been in here so long, they just number their
jokes."
Meanwhile another one calls out "2!". Nobody laughs.
The new warden leans over and asks, "What happened?" To this
the old warden replied, "Some people just can't tell a
joke."
