US answer to global warming: smoke and giant space mirrors

Washington urges scientists to develop ways to reflect
sunlight as 'insurance'

David Adam, environment correspondent
Saturday January 27, 2007
The Guardian

The US government wants the world's scientists to develop
technology to block sunlight as a last-ditch way to halt
global warming, the Guardian has learned. It says research
into techniques such as giant mirrors in space or reflective
dust pumped into the atmosphere would be "important
insurance" against rising emissions, and has lobbied for
such a strategy to be recommended by a major UN report on
climate change, the first part of which will be published on
Friday.

The US has also attempted to steer the UN report, prepared
by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC),
away from conclusions that would support a new worldwide
climate treaty based on binding targets to reduce emissions
- as sought by Tony Blair. It has demanded a draft of the
report be changed to emphasise the benefits of voluntary
agreements and to include criticisms of the Kyoto Protocol,
the existing treaty which the US administration opposes.

The final IPCC report, written by experts from across the
world, will underpin international negotiations to devise a
new emissions treaty to succeed Kyoto, the first phase of
which expires in 2012. World governments were given a draft
of the report last year and invited to comment.

The US response, a copy of which has been obtained by the
Guardian, says the idea of interfering with sunlight should
be included in the summary for policymakers, the prominent
chapter at the front of each IPCC report. It says:
"Modifying solar radiance may be an important strategy if
mitigation of emissions fails. Doing the R&D to estimate the
consequences of applying such a strategy is important
insurance that should be taken out. This is a very important
possibility that should be considered."

Scientists have previously estimated that reflecting less
than 1% of sunlight back into space could compensate for the
warming generated by all greenhouse gases emitted since the
industrial revolution. Possible techniques include putting a
giant screen into orbit, thousands of tiny, shiny balloons,
or microscopic sulphate droplets pumped into the high
atmosphere to mimic the cooling effects of a volcanic
eruption. The IPCC draft said such ideas were "speculative,
uncosted and with potential unknown side-effects".

The US submission is based on the views of dozens of
government officials and is accompanied by a letter signed
by Harlan Watson, senior climate negotiator at the US state
department. It complains the IPCC draft report is
"Kyoto-centric" and it wants to include the work of
economists who have reported "the degree to which the Kyoto
framework is found wanting". It takes issue with a statement
that "one weakness of the [Kyoto] protocol, however, is its
non-ratificiation by some significant greenhouse gas
emitters" and asks: "Is this the only weakness worth
mentioning? Are there others?"

It also insists the wording on the ineffectiveness of
voluntary agreements be altered to include "a number of them
have had significant impacts" and complains that overall
"the report tends to overstate or focus on the negative
effects of climate change." It also wants more emphasis on
responsibilities of the developing world.

The IPCC report is made up of three sections. The first, on
the science of climate change, will be launched on Friday.
Sections on the impact and mitigation of climate change - in
which the US wants to include references to the sun-blocking
technology - will follow later this year.

The likely contents of the report have been an open secret
since the Bush administration posted its draft copy on the
internet in April. Next week's science report will say there
is a 90% chance that human activity is warming the planet,
and that global average temperatures will rise another 1.5C
to 5.8C this century depending on emissions. The US response
shows it accepts these statements, but it disagrees with a
more tentative conclusion that rising temperatures have made
hurricanes more powerful.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - - with Karin Henderson

Anatomy And Physiology (A&P)
The Make Up Of Your Body And
How It Functions
PART 8 of 9

It all sounds very difficult, and confusing AND time
consuming! However, once you see how easy it is
to provide your body with these positive factors and
eliminate harmful or negative ones, it's not so
complicated. But up till now you have probably taken
your body for granted. It may be running on "empty".
You moved without any consideration for the
consequences to your joints. You probably didn't
realise that just your (external) home, you body
needs regular maintenance or a breakdown will occur.

Now that you have a greater understanding, you will
find questions to your answers. If you recognize some
possible allergies, find out why you have them and
why the entire world doesn't have them. Yes, many
do, but again, they are not a natural phenomenon.
Find out what is going into your body via foods, drugs,
or environmental "irritants". Ask why your body
puts up a fight (asthma attack or sneezing) when
something gets into your nose or lungs. Your
respiratory system is trying to protect you. Yet for
convenience sake, you take a drug to kill your protective
defence mechanisms. If you find your elbows stiff after
tennis, ask yourself why.

I am really glad we are on an anti-aging crusade but
I think it comes from the wrong sector of society. Rebuild
your own body with common sense and healthy choices.
Ask yourself how you can feed and nurture every cell
of your body's systems. Your entire body needs adequate
and appropriate nutrition, and the elimination of harmful
intruders. (Drugs, allergens, unhealthy environments, etc.)

You are the gatekeeper. RSVP your way back to health.
Read all you can. Study what you really don't understand.
Visualize yourself in full health (no matter what your present
state is.). Then get practical. Follow proper eating habits
and exercise your body. You don't have to run a marathon.
A gentle walk will do and you can increase the pace as you
feel like it. Make the changes you know are necessary. And
please remember you are NOT your spouse, your parent,
or anyone else. You are strictly you. Only you have been
privilege of living in this body for now. It is your responsibility
to nurture it so we can all benefit from your mission
through life.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Stupidity Born of Desperation

Now I have seen it all. We don’t, apparently, want to put a
stop to emissions that are producing greenhouse gasses. No.
Apparently we want to keep that going just the way it is.

The newest idea put forth by the U.S. government, if you can
believe that, is that we should create some means of
controlling how much sun reaches this planet. You know, if
we reduce the sunlight then we won’t have a problem, right?

I have never heard such trash in my life before and I have
heard lots. Can you imagine what would happen if this idea
were to proceed? Here we can’t even manage properly our own
effluent, our own emissions, yet somehow the U.S. government
thinks it can and will manage the amount of sunlight that
will reach this planet? That is hubristic in the EXTREME.

Such arrogance can neither be dealt with or understood. It
exceeds common sense by so far it is impossible for a sound
human mind to comprehend.

To the world at large - LISTEN

The solution to the problem is stop doing what you are
doing. You cannot and will not solve the issue by doing
more. All the thinking you have done up to this point is
what has created the problem. Go backwards. Reverse your
thinking. Stop doing all the things you are doing that
causes the problem. Any other solution - ANY - will only
waste time and further compound the problem. Man’s history
is abundantly clear on that point.

Now, folks, we have a real problem. It is a well known fact
that the people that created the problem can never solve it.

Do what you will, but control the sun? That is merely
stupidity born of desperation.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Paddle Your Own Canoe: Where does the expression "paddle
your own canoe" come from?

The phrase was first used in a poem published in "Harper's
Magazine" for May 1854. "Leave to Heaven, in humble trust,
All you will to do But is you would succeed you must Paddle
your own canoe."
