Is there a difference between motion sickness and sea

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

--------------

What causes car sickness?

If you feel dizzy when in the car, the thing to do is to
look out of the window of the car and watch things moving
past. That's because the feeling of motion sickness is
caused by a conflict between what your eyes are seeing and
what your body is feeling. When you're in a car, the motion
of the car makes your body sway a little. If you're the
driver or a passenger who loves to look out the window,
there's no problem. You feel the swaying and your eyes see
the movement outside the window. But if you're in the
backseat reading a book or looking down, your eyes don't see
movement and don't report that movement to the brain. But
your inner ear, which controls balance, still FEELS the
movement and tells your brain you're in motion. The
conflicting messages received by the brain make you feel
ill.

In Alfred Hitchcock's classic film, Vertigo, what is the
phobia exhibited by the main character (played by James
Stewart)?

Police detective John "Scottie" Ferguson, played by James
Stewart, suffers from severe acrophobia, a fear of heights.
His intense fear of heights and of falling results in
vertigo and forces him to retire from the police department.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW™ ... with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

Superheroes Need Not Apply

Are you a work superhero(ine)? Are you the one who knows
where everything is, what everything costs, what happened to
last year's __________ and, who did what to whom when? In
addition, are you the one who can fix anything, soothe the
raging client and stay late daily? AND, are you the one
through whom everything must pass, or the only person who
can do specific, critical tasks? Is everyone dependent upon
you for something? Watch out! You are not likely to be next
in line for a promotion. Why not? You have made yourself too
critical to the organization. If you are that indispensable
and irreplaceable, how can you ever be promoted?

There is another downside to being a 'superhero(ine)'. You
stand squarely in line for blame and criticism. You are a
walking target. You are in danger of becoming the bottleneck
in your organization. It may feel to you like control and
power, however, in reality, it is fraught with danger and
uncertainty. If others cannot do their work before you
complete a task, who will they point to when deadlines loom?
On the other hand, there is great joy in Mudville, when you
step up to bat if you always hit a homer.

Superhero(ine)s can be marvelous, organized founts of
knowledge and skill. They can also be perfectionists and
control freaks. You likely know one in each category.
Sometimes the superhero(ine) actually hoards tasks and takes
on additional responsibilities in a bid to become
indispensable. Sometimes, they simply want to prove what
they are capable of producing. We are all superhero(ine)s at
times if we want to move up in our organizations. The
distinguishing feature is our awareness of our reasons for
undertaking tasks and responsibilities.

Your value to your organization is actually raised when you
teach others to perform competently, when you delegate well
and increase the skill and knowledge of others. Some great
advice from Harry E. Chambers, author of "Getting Promoted",
is: "Learn as much as you can about as many functions,
tasks, and roles as possible, but do not insist upon doing
them all yourself. Learn to give them away. Refusing to
allow others to learn and expand their boundaries is
considered weakness. Being the perceived bottleneck or
control freak can be to your career what Kryptonite is to
Superman!"

Think carefully about your roles and goals. Be on track to
success on your own terms.

Health Question About
Fibromyalgia & Arthritis
PART 1 of 5

HEALTH QUESTION: Hi there, I have a question. I had an x-ray
confirming I have "degenerative lippings" in my neck. Is this
Osteoarthritis? I am 32, what can I expect to happen in the
future as I age?

(1) Will this cripple me?

(2) I also have fibromyalgia.... which is painful, but at least it isn't
degenerative!

(3) Any help you can offer in answering my questions is greatly
appreciated... as I have searched a bunch of different websites,
but none actually specify what "degenerative" lippings are.

(4) Since I have had the Fibromyalgia in my upper back, I have the
degenerative lippings, I have had constant "bloatedness"

(5) I now have a sluggish bowel, occasional swelling of my
leg calves, eyes sore & swollen, jaw aches, inflamation in
my shoulders, neck & upper back. I never sleep well, wake
sore and unrefreshed. I feel like I am 90

Thanks so much for you're time.

MY ANSWER: (1) This is a very common question. I suggest you do
some research and visit your family doctor or other health care
provider. Through a variety of tests and examinations, you will
receive a diagnosis. If you are curious as to how your symptoms
compare with the term Osteoarthritis, visit this Medline site.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000423.htm

Here we find that arthritis deals with the cartilage of the
affected joint (knees, elbows, fingers, toes, etc.) The actual
joint gets roughened and becomes worn down (usually both
surfaces). As the disease progresses, the cartilage becomes
completely worn down and the bone rubs on bone. This sounds very
painful! It's like running your car with only the wheels and no
tires.

We also learn that "Bony spurs usually develop around the
joint." So any smooth flow of motion is now "interrupted" by
pain caused by the misalignment of the tissue that surrounds it.
Doctors may also refer to this as degenerative arthritis or
degenerative joint disease.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Government And Church On Same Path - Mislead

This is one of those potpourri days where there seems to be
a lot to talk about several things, yet in the grand scheme
of things they are sort of expected.

The first is a bad issue. It seems the U.S. government has
gone out of its way to mislead us on global warming. Over
500 scientists said that in writing reports on aspects of
global warming they were pressured into changing what they
said and in many cases changing the meaning completely.

A committee investigating this issue is now finding out the
government of President Bush has actively engaged in this
practice.

Nice, huh? The government we put in office to look out for
our affairs seems to have other things on its mind.

Another item, similar in a way, is there is a group of nuns
in Greece who, failing in business, have closed their doors
and run away to avoid having to pay debts to suppliers. Can
you imagine that? That they would even think of running is
far beyond the scope of my expectations. These are people
who present themselves as living the only right way, who
pass judgement on us, who require we confess to them, and
they do this? It seems to me the church must be rotten right
to the very core of its being. I even read reports, before
they were all hushed up, about the Pope, years ago, being
involved in a sex case. I guess you can understand why I
will not darken the doorway of that church.

And it seems bird flu has taken on another avenue to spread
itself around. Reports in Chinese newspapers indicate China
has found over 500 cats infected with the disease. It is not
known how easily, if at all, they can pass the disease along
to man. It is believed the cats acquired the virus by eating
infected poultry. Yet it remains interesting and must be
watched.

Bird flu, as with other living things is just as subject to
the laws of life as we are. The never ending need for
survival, to expand its territory, to thrive, that continual
force for life that stimulates our own life also stimulates
the bird flu virus. Rest assured it will live. Our job,
because it can harm and kill humans, is to contain it. We
must be ever vigilant of this virus and others that want a
chunk of our (human) hide..

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Rabbit Punch: why do we call a punch behind the ear in
boxing a "rabbit punch"?

Because at one time a poacher catching a rabbit in a snare
which in itself had not killed the animal would kill it with
a blow on the back of the neck.

Little Susan was mother's helper. She helped set the table
when company was due for dinner. Presently everything was
on, the guest came in, and everyone sat down. Then Mother
noticed something was missing.

"Susan," she said, "You didn't put a knife and fork at
Mr. Smith's place..."

"I thought he wouldn't need them," explained Susan.
"Daddy says he always eats like a horse!!"

A counselor was helping his kids put their stuff away on
their first morning in Summer Camp. He was surprised to
see one of the youngsters had an umbrella. The counselor
asked, "Why did you bring an umbrella to the summer camp??"

The kid answered, "Did you ever have a mother?"
