How do snake charmers avoid getting bitten?
Snake charmers do not really charm or hypnotize cobras
with their flute-playing. The cobra, which is actually deaf to
normal sounds, sways back and forth in response to the
motion of the flute. Snake charmers avoid being bitten by
staying outside of the striking distance of the snake, by
relying on the cobra's poor day-vision, and sometimes by
actually sewing the snake's mouth shut or removing its
fangs beforehand.
Are snakes slimy?
Snakes appear to be wet, thanks to the reflection of light off
two layers of skin. In fact, their skin is quite dry and feels
slightly rough, sort of like leather.

Child Rescue System Goes Online
The US Amber Alert system, previously an alert system
which sent out radio messages regarding child
abductions, now officially has an online presence.
As of yesterday, the Amber Alert Web portal will
allow messages to be transmitted via pagers, mobile
phones and Blackerry handheld devices. E2C, the
company that engineered the portal, explains the
online messages will help the system be more targeted,
sending alerts only to areas near where a child has
been kidnapped. The Amber Alert system has helped
retrieve 137 lost children since 1998. The online alert
system is currently available in 11 states, but should
eventually to expand to 49 states (not including
Hawaii which has its own system in place).

Security Threats? Blame the Users!
According to the "Security Development Survey," from
Evans Data Corporation, 25% of developers believe
that the biggest hurdle to computer security is end
users refusing to adhere to policies. Of the developers
surveyed, 25% claimed social engineering and lack of
adherence to policies were the biggest security risks,
and another 15% cited lack of qualified personnel.
"The best technology in the world can be undone by
untrained or inattentive end users," said
Glenn MacEwen, an analyst at Evans Data. And
you were probably thinking security breakdowns
were the fault of spammers, phishers and rogue

COMPUTER TIPS - - -
-------------------------
How to replace a CD Burner
Burners are really inexpensive these days. Installing a burner
is not difficult.
Some computers have the drives in a cage that is removable from
the front. But most require you to remove the sides of the computer.
These are usually held on by two screws in the back.
The old drive is probably held in by two screws on each side. In the
back, it will have a power socket attached. It will also have a
40-socket IDE attachment with a wide ribbon cable. Detach these
cables. Also detach the audio cable.
The important part is setting the jumpers.
If your old CD drive is attached to the ribbon cable's black
connector, it is a master. If the attachment is to the gray connector,
it is a slave. Set your new drive's jumpers the same way. Jumper
guidelines will be in the new drive's instructions.
Once the jumpers are set, slide the new drive in. Reattach the power
cable, the audio cable and the IDE ribbon cable. Look at them
carefully before attaching them. They'll only go one way.
If necessary, make a
sketch of the connections before you remove your old drive.

Diagnostic Tests For Meniere's Symptoms
PART 1 of 5
Here is an actual "question and answer" about testing
done for Meniere's type symptoms. The classic symptoms
are listed below. Hi Kathy, this was your original
request. I hope you get some sort of helpful
information out of it. I believe you did four tests:
ECoG, Audiogram, Tympanogram, and ENG. Your test
results were documented as follows: ECoG showed an AP
ratio of 0.51 on the right indicating Menieres
diseases. Audiogram was normal. Speech thresholds are 5
dB bilaterally, 88 % discrim right, 96 % left, normal
tympanogram. She had an ENG and had a caloric weakness
of 71 % to the right and direction preponderance of 43
% to the right. She had some abnormal tracking. ABR was
normal. She had SPAP ratio of 0.51 for the right ear
and 0.22 for the left ear on her ECoG which means that
Menieres diseases is a possibility. Her difference was
0.03 which is normal on her ABR. Speech thresholds are
5 dB bilaterally, 88 % discrimination right, 96 % left,
Her ENG showed a caloric weakness of 0.71 to the right
direction, preponderance was 43 % to the right. I don't
understand this can you help me to understand.
Thank-you Kathy
My response: Kathy, this has been a very long exercise
in research! Thank you for asking to me to do it. I
visited many Internet sites and eventually settled on
two of them. But I also researched many textbooks. The
very best one was written by Patty Haybach, RN, M.S.
http://www.vestibular.org/
http://www.bme.jhu.edu/labs/chb/disorders/menieres.html
The ear is an organ of the body. Its purpose is to take
the "message" of sound from a person's environment and
allow the person to hear. A normal body has two ears.
(We will discuss one.) It has 3 distinct sections or
parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner
ear. The outer ear catches the sound and carries it
into the middle ear to the tympanic membrane (eardrum).
This membrane is like a "curtain" or filter and
separates the outer ear from the middle ear. The sound
waves make the eardrum vibrate. This "translates" the
sounds into vibrations. The middle ear has three bones
that stretch from the tympanic membrane (curtain) to
the start of the inner ear (oval window). These bones
are all connected from the tympanic membrane to the
oval window. Their function is to transmit the
vibrations into the cochlea and the fluid found in the
inner ear (endolymph). The inner ear is has several
parts. Some of its more prominent parts are the
cochlea, semicircular canals, and vestibulo-cochlear
nerve and its branches. (vestibular/balance and
acoustic/hearing nerves). Deep in the cochlea are
special hearing receivers. These receivers are
stimulated by this vibrating fluid, and their message
of sound is transmitted to the hearing/balance nerves,
as electrical impulses. These impulses are then relayed
to the brain (brain stem) for interpretation. Two main
functions of the inner ear have to do with hearing
("acoustic" or "auditory") and balance ("vestibular").
The nerves then communicate with the brain
(cerebellum). The appropriate part of the brain will
then interpret the message and give commands back to
the ear. These commands will relate to hearing and
balance. "Classic" Meniere's symptoms include: hearing
fluctuation, ear pressure, tinnitus (a variety of
sounds or ear noises), vertigo, and/or dizziness. So
the testing is done to check for abnormal responses
related to balance and hearing.ECoG: a hearing test.
Elecrocochleography is a complex hearing test designed
to record the electrical activity of the cochlea, a
part of the inner ear. It is done with a special
computer. Sound is put into the ear, where it is
transformed into vibrations in the middle ear. (Your
ear does this naturally and automatically all the
time.) And then these vibrations are turned into
electrical impulses in the inner ear. This test records
and measures this electrical activity. These results
are then compared to established patterns typical of
normal hearing and of Meniere's. Hydrops (Ménières) is
suggested when the ratio is greater than 35%. Balance
is not involved with this part.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.

Interesting enough both Mae and Sue marveled
at the power and glory of projecting love unto
mankind. At the new orphanage it clearly is going
to make the lives of the kids a great deal better,
and who knows, many might also learn higher law.
It seems like less than a drop in the bucket
in this land of so many people, but it has to
begin someplace. In any event that is not the
issue for it was the children who needed help and
received it.
Mae and Sue, walking along, both basked in a
glow of love. It was noticeable by all who passed
them. They projected this love 30 feet in all
directions from themselves. Any who penetrated
that envelope were immediately healed of any
maladies affecting their bodies.
The city was thinning out even more now and
giving way to much industrial activity. It had all
the accompanying rusted iron placed on the
land everywhere you looked. Also there were the
trucks rather than cars, bicycles and rickshaws.
Soon the ladies were again in the country and
free of the smells of the city. The prevailing
winds in this land were from the northwest, as it
is in all norther hemisphere countries. As the
ladies were walking in a northerly direction the
breezes hitting them now were fresh and smelled of
farmland and flowers and forests. It was
invigorating.
Even though speed was not the issue, Mae and
Sue were now so used to walking that they
maintained a good pace. They had long since
developed leg muscles as well as all others used
for walking. They had also become lean and fit
with all this exercise, and getting closer to
nature. The result was that even without their
abilities in using higher law, they were marvelous
specimens of the human race.
On this road they were amongst much in the way
of traffic. There were ox carts heavy laden with
hay, straw, rice or gunny sacks filled with
produce. There were elephants laden with their
burdens. There were more bicycles on this road
than they had seen in the city, or so they
thought. Occasionally they would see motorized
scooters, and the people walking were too numerous
to count.
They passed a man who had a crate made from
bamboo in which he was taking chickens to
market. He had this crate strapped to the rear of
his bicycle and was somehow maintaining balance,
in spite of all the turning and slowing he had to
do to manoeuvre in the traffic. The chickens kept
up a chorus of squawking all the way. It was an
amusing sight, yet it revealed the man had done
this many times. His confidence level was high and
he had no fear of traffic.
Then there were the cars, who, because of
their power, and the attitude of the drivers or
passengers, tore up and down this highway with
little caring for those walking, or the slower
modes of transportation. They were driving as if
the horn were the most important system on the
vehicle. They darted in and out of traffic with no
regard how close they came to anyone. More than
once Mae and Sue saw a car bumper or fender hit a
passerby. The ladies always ensured the victim was
properly cared for and safe.
You would wonder how far some of these people
had come. Some were not unlike Shing Li, having
come a great distance over many days. Others were
simply coming from the next town.
Towns, villages and rest stops if you call
them that, are usually located about four hours
walking distance apart. That meant that two or
three times during a day Mae and Sue would pass a
table of oranges or other fruit. The actual
settlements were usually a days walk of more
apart.
Because of that it was not uncommon to see
folks in fields and under trees along the way.
They would be taking rest. This was predominant at
around four every afternoon when they would stop
to build a cow chip fire to boil water for tea.
The result of so many doing this is that there was
a pall of smoke over all the land. Not even the
sun could get through.
