TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

How many times does a person's heart beat in a
lifetime?

How much blood is contained in the average body?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How do hummingbirds fly backwards and upside down?

Birds, who take flight by forcing air downward and
backward with their wings, really SHOULDN'T be able to
fly backward. Yet the hummingbird can fly both backward
and upside down, and can hover with ease. The wings of
these tiny wonders rotate rapidly at the shoulder,
tilting to force air forward and down on the
downstroke, but also backward and down on what should
be the upstroke. By adjusting the tilt, the hummingbird
can hover or move in any direction. The bird also has a
powerful breast muscle and a metabolism that is
amazingly rapid.

Is it possible to have a heart attack without any chest
pain?

Yes. In fact, research indicates that painless heart
attacks are surprisingly common. A nationwide study of
434,877 heart attack victims showed that one-third of
heart attack patients went to the hospital without any
chest pain. Patients who experienced no pain were more
than twice as likely to die, in part because they
delayed going to the hospital and because doctors were
slower to diagnose their condition. Women, nonwhites,
patients older than 75, and those with previous heart
failure, stroke, or diabetes were more likely to suffer
a painless heart attack. (Non-pain symptoms of a heart
attack include irregular heartbeat, shortness of
breath, nervousness, extreme weakness, dizziness, and
nausea.)

Help Wanted Ads Rise Online, Drop In Print
by Michael Deibert,

JOB ADS IN PRINT NEWSPAPERS dipped in May,
according to a report released Thursday by the
Conference Board--but online job ads have continued
to grow. The Conference Board's May Help-Wanted
Advertising Index, which surveys help-wanted advertising
volume in print editions of 51 major newspapers monthly,
dipped two points in May, standing at 37 from 39 in April
and in May of 2004. The Board's survey showed help-wanted
declining in all nine U.S. geographic regions, with the
sharpest dips occurring in the Mountain region (where
ads fell 15.4 percent), South Atlantic (decline of 13.9
percent), and East South Central (11.7 percent drop).

These figures stand in marked contrast to recent data
from Corzen, a New York research firm, which recently
released a survey revealing that listings for jobs
posted on three major online job clearinghouses have
grown exponentially over the last year. May job
postings on the CareerBuilder Web site rose to
1,322,812 last month from 1,105,120 in May 2004;
listings on HotJobs climbed to 589,883 from 464,259
over the same time period; and Monster job listings
increased from 998,544 to 1,157,576, according to
Corzen.

Monster, which also releases its own monthly employment
index, reported that its index rose three points in May
to 134 from 131 in April and 105 in May 2004--with
online demand for workers rising in 17 of 20 industries
in May, and management leading the way.

The online Craigslist network, a vast repository of
classifieds advertising for everything from jobs to
apartments to more salacious offerings, also has
experienced impressive growth, with the number of
visitors tripling in the past year to 2.4 billion a
month.

One chief attraction of the online classifieds,
industry insiders say, is the speed with which it
facilitates exchanges between interested parties.

"Online has become a more mainstream medium, and we
certainly see that in the employer or job seekers use
our site," says Jenny Sullivan, a spokesperson for
CareerBuilder. "The appeal of online is that it helps
expedite the hiring process, though print is a trusted
medium that is not going away, and there's going to
continue to be a need for both."

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency
PART 3 of 11

An allergy is a frequent, recognized, tested or
suspected condition in which a certain element
(intruder) brings about a certain unwanted body
reaction. An allergic reaction is the actual activity
in which this allergy (condition) plays out. Your
immune system is equipped to react to any intruders by
bringing in processes (inflammatory process) and its
own chemicals to overcome (render harmless) or
neutralize them. The intruder is called an antigen and
it is a foreign substance, often a protein. It may be a
substance from the environment (such as chemicals,
bacteria, viruses, or pollen) or formed within the body
(such as bacterial toxins or tissue cells). So an
allergic reaction is the result of an allergen entering
your body. It is this reaction that tells you something
isn’t right and needs to be checked out.

In another very simplistic explanation, the body
realizes it will come up against this allergen
frequently, so it creates guards to deal with the
intruders, but only a specific guard per specific
intruder. That guard is called an antibody. Thus the
next time you encounter this allergen, there is already
some defence mechanism (antibody) available. The body
doesn’t have to work so hard to get rid of it. This is
what allergy shots are based on. This is being
desensitized: not being so strongly affected by things
such as pollen or dust or hair dander. In essence it
acclimatizes the intruder to the body. Each type of
antibody is unique and defends the body against only
one specific type of antigen.

For our purposes, the antigen and the allergen are both
intruders which cause the body to activate its immune
response. In the medical field, there is a difference.
Histamines and antihistamines are chemicals that are
very involved in this type of reaction. Histamine is
released by the body as the allergen intrudes. As
already mentioned the body tries to set up preventative
measures. And this is often the release of histamine.
But an antihistamine is a chemical that the medical
community has produced to react to this reaction. Often
the histamine itself might cause a problem, so it is
“quietened” to reduce that effect. Without going into
too much detail here, steroids are used to create this
reaction. Essentially by giving this type of drug, you
are preventing the body’s own defence mechanisms from
doing their job. But this is all part of the medical
model of treatment. Some examples of antihistamines are
Benadryl and diphenhydramine; and corticosteroids, such
as prednisone. These may be given to further reduce
symptoms. If you are using these types of drugs, I
would encourage you to have regular liver testing done.
I would also suggest you find alternatives to their
long-term use. You should do your own in-depth
research. Link defining allergies

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

"I guess you're right. I never thought about
it. It is inconcieveable to me that there is no
need for government, for police, for control."
"In the mind of man, Bob, there is little room
for looking at truth. To those presently in
control, the idea of losing it would be so
traumatic they will entertain no thinking contrary
to what they are doing. It is comparable to Jesus
saying that it is 'far easier for a camel to pass
through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich
man to get into the kingdom of heaven'. Control is
another of the thoughts of man that man has to
rethink. In any event, as it is unlikely to happen
in our lifetime, we will no longer discuss it."
Sam knew this discussion was only a bottomless
pit where arguments would go on for days, months,
years. There was no answer for those who did not
live by higher law and who did not understand it.

"Listen, I think we best get out of here and
let Bob and Harriett prepare for their guests this
evening. If you folks want to come out to the lake
early tomorrow that would be great. I'm sure you
will enjoy the activity, the guests and all the
goings on." Alewka extended the invitation again.

Sharon, Tim, Sam and Alewka got up to leave,
thanking their guests for tea and promising to see
them tomorrow. The vanished as if they had not
even been there.

They reappeared in the Henry kitchen. Taking
their customary positions at the table, they
continued to drink coffee.

Tom and Billy came in, "Hi guys! All set for
the big day?"
"Hi you two!" Tim responded, "I hope you two
are I need you in best form to act as my groom's
men."

"We'll be there bro, with nothing but smiles
and our new tuxes. I wouldn't miss this for
anything." Tom had a gleam in his eye, teasing his
brother.

"When are you expecting the company to start
coming, Mom?" It was Sharon who was doing the
asking.

"How's about right now?" A strange voice spoke
up. "Hi everybody. I guess we're early but we
wanted to come so we wouldn't miss anything."

"Eloise, Mazunta! How are you?" The entire
family got up to greet the newcomers. Big hugs and
kisses all around, including the kids.

They all sat down again and the conversation
was lively. It was always good to see Eloise and
Mazunta.

"You know, I am getting the notion we should
get out to the lake. We may have others arrive
tonight and we want to be there to greet them.

That was fine for all present and in the blink
of an eye they were all out at the lake.

Alewka set up coffees on the table sitting on
the front deck to the cabin. It was a huge deck
some 40 feet front to back and all across the
width of the cabin, some 60 feet. It would hold a
lot of people, food, drink and activity.

Sure enough, they weren't there for an hour
when Sien appeared. "Hello folks! How is everyone
today?" He walked over to the table and poured
himself a coffee.

All were happy to see him. It had been a very
long time since this group had.

The evening wore on and before everyone knew
it the time had come for sleeping. They went
inside and Alewka divided up the rooms for
everyone to have a bed. They slept.

Upon awaking they, one by one, rose, stretched
and walked out onto the deck, there to be greeted
by guests who had arrived earlier. David, Pam and
the kids from the village had arrived, along with
Mazunta's folks. Boolanga, Karmuz and the kids had
arrived, so everyone from the village who was
invited was now present.

The party was on. Each knew the other and it
was clear this was going to be a wonderful
celebration.

Bob and Harriett Smithson arrived around 10:30
a.m. and were widely circulated as Sharon wanted
to introduce them to all the guests. The Smithsons
were impressed. All guests were dressed in the
style they themselves were. The love they were
feeling from everyone permitted them to realize
that all present lived by higher law. They felt
buoyed up and happier than they could remember. To
them this was going to be a fine day.

Then some surprises. Riata came, from China,
and she brought Amenti, Reno and Maria. It was
wonderful that they could attend.

Next came a bunch from Pinehill, the Strikers,
the Sparks, the Whites.

Then just past lunch, Susan Miles came with a
friend she and Mae Wiley had made in China, Shing
Li, her kids and her friend Psong.
