How many people in the world speak Chinese?

What is cowpox?

Cowpox is a virus similar to smallpox, but much, much
milder. Humans have contracted the disease from the
infected teats of milking cows and also from domestic
cats. The important thing about cowpox is that if
you've had it, you can't get smallpox. Back when
smallpox was a deadly threat, that was a definite
benefit. Edward Jenner, a British doctor living in the
late eighteenth century, noticed that milkmaids
generally didn't get smallpox. His observation led to
the eventual smallpox vaccine and to vaccines in
general.

What language is spoken most in the world?

If you guessed English, you're wrong. English is
actually the THIRD most spoken language, following
Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

FCC Chair: Analog or Digital? TV Stations, Not Cable
Operators, Should Decide by David Kaplan

SEEKING TO GET PAST ONE of the major hurdles on the
move from analog signals to digital, TV stations should
have the right to determine whether local cable
operators use the analog signals or the new digital
versions, said Kevin Martin, the chairman of the
Federal Communications Commission. The full commission
is expected to decide the measure at its July 14
meeting.

Right now, stations are allowed to demand that local
cable systems carry only their analog channels. On
Thursday, Martin said that he wants the TV business to
start moving from the old channels in order to spur
greater consumer adoption of digital programming.

Therefore, the current policy of applying cable
must-carry rights only to analog channels must be
changed, he said. Still, the cable industry is pushing
for his fellow commissioners to reject the proposal,
decrying the idea as a backdoor way to mandate
dual-carriage obligations on the pay-TV industry. The
industry claims that stations will demand carriage of
their digital signals and cable operators will have no
choice other than to carry the analog version as well,
because most viewers still aren't equipped to see
digital channels and will demand that analog versions
remain available.

Through an FCC representative, Martin said that this
problem would be avoided through contract negotiations
between the stations and the local cable operators.

One cable industry professional denounced the measure
as "coercive."

"That gives the stations an unfair advantage against
local cable companies," said one cable industry source.
"And by allowing them that choice, it will further
impede the movement towards the adoption of high def
TV."

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency
PART 7 of 11

If you have any allergies: real or suspected, make a
note of them. Anaphylactic reactions to medication will
typically occur within an hour after taking the drug,
However reactions may occur several hours later. It is
estimated that up to 10 percent of the population may
be at risk for allergic reactions to medications.

Please note, according to literature from The American
Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, "The chances
of developing an allergic reaction may be increased if
the drug is given frequently, in large doses, or by
injection rather than by pill. The most important
factor may be an inherited genetic tendency of the
immune system to develop allergies. Contrary to popular
myth, however, a family history of allergy to a
specific drug does not mean that a patient has an
increased chance of reacting to the same drug." Please
read and understand the information in the insert that
comes along from your pharmacist. Do you have any sinus
problems? Could they be a result of an allergic
reaction to a drug you are now taking? Ever thought of
that before?

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

"There you go again, getting deep on me. Who
is that Bob is speaking with? My he is a strapping
man. Look how he stands out."

"Harriett, that is our son-in-law. He is
Eloise's husband. His name is Mazunta and yes he
is a magnificent creature. He is the village
leader, and a very wise man. He, too, lives by
higher law."

"Alewka, he certainly looks like a special
individual."

"He is, Harriett. He is."

"And who is the person who will be conducting
the ceremony? Or is he here yet?"

"That's him over there, speaking with your new
friend, Abetta. His name is Sien. Would you like
to meet him?"

"Yes, but before I do who is that young lady
young Tom has his eyes on? My is she ever a
looker."

"Isn't she?" Mae spoke up. "Her name is Tlang.
She comes from a place about the center of China.
She lives in an orphanage with the group of people
who are standing over there. She is a wonderful
girl and you're right she is beautiful. It's no
wonder she had turned Tom's eye. She does that
wherever she goes. She is one smart girl, too."

"Mae and Susan found her in China, in
circumstances that were somewhat terrible. They
took her out of that and brought her to the
orphanage. She is doing very well and it won't be
long before she, too, lives by higher law." Alewka
was adding to the conversation.

"Excuse me. I want to go say hi to Miguele."
Sam left the group. He walked over to where
Miguele was standing. He was speaking with his
son-in-law, Romano.

"Hi you two. How are you guys doing? It's nice
to have you here. Everything to your liking?"

"Hi Sam. My it is good to be here. You have a
very nice spot for the wedding. It's good to see
so many loved ones present. You seem to be
bringing them in from all over the world."

"Well, Miguele, you know how it is. It just
seems our family, for one reason or another, has
travelled all over. But we aren't the only ones.
Look at your own daughter, Riata."

"Yes, she does get around, doesn't she."

"How are you Romano? How do you like being a
father?"

"Sam, it is such a great privilege, I love it.
Have you met Juanita, yet? She is a gang girl that
used to live with the gang I used to be with. She
has had a hard time adjusting to life outside the
gang, but I think she is finally making it. She
was terribly abused, but she is a lovely young
lady. I see her over there talking with Billy."

"I have not yet met her, Romano. When the time
is right you will have to introduce me. She seems
like a very nice lady."

"She is, Sam. She lives with us and helps with
the children. She seems, now, to have finally shed
the 'gang' mentality. They sure had her
brainwashed. I think that old gang has broken up
now. The last I saw their leader was somewhat
ineffective. He lost status in their eyes and now
they have no cohesive binding amongst themselves."

"Good. All they need now is a little direction
and maybe they will stop terrorizing the
neighborhood."

"They stopped doing that quite a while ago.
They were mostly harmless, living almost
completely within the group, but they were getting
older and the gang life was no longer offering
them what they wanted out of life. When Juanita
left that brought extra burdens on the other girls
and the subsequent jealousies amongst the guys.
You know the rules, Sam. Any gang girl can be used
by any of the guys. When some got jealous, then
infighting began and their leader was powerless to
control it. Now they are rudderless and going
their own ways."

"Funny, isn't it, how that seems to happen,
sooner or later, to all mens organizations.
Sometimes is takes hundreds of years but sooner or
later they outlive their usefulness. Even the
great empire of Rome collapsed and that same
condition will occur to all."

"I never looked at it that way, Sam, but
you're right. Only our Maker is constant,
dependable, always present, only our Maker has
been the same from the beginning. Man has tried
nearly everything and, in one form or another,
keeps going back to the same things. They put a
little different twist to it, call it by a
different name, but it is only the same old thing
with a coat of paint on it. Only by coming to
their Maker will man see things through different
eyes."

"Awh! But man is stubborn. He keeps doing
things to feed his ego rather than feed his soul.
Even his giving to aid other men is for the
purpose of feeding his ego rather than aiding his
fellow man. Man shall have his reward. Such is his
greed. And because man thinks he 'has it all' he
will not look at his inner greed and selfishness.
Tell him about it and he will fight rather than
look at the truth of it."

HA! HA! HA!

One night at McChord Air Force Base, I was dispatched
to check out the security fence where an alarm had gone
off. The fence was at the end of the base runway.

When I got to the scene, I found a raccoon was the
culprit, so I ran around and flapped my arms to scare
the animal away.

Suddenly an air-traffic controller came over the
public-address system and announced loudly,

"Attention to the airman at the end of the runway. You
are now cleared for takeoff."
