Why has the Great Wall of China been called the
"longest cemetery in the world"?

Archaeologists have found that the Great Wall of China
contains tombs within the structure. It's also known
that when laborers working on the wall in ancient times
died, their bodies were frequently just added to the
wall's building materials, rather than given proper
burials.

What is the origin of the phrase "dead as a doornail"?

What in the world do doornails have to do with death?
Well, no one knows for sure, but here's one theory:
Until about the 1800s, metal nails used in the
construction of doors were typically driven through the
wood, then bent down on the other side, making them
very difficult to remove. Carpenters referred to these
nails as "dead" because (like most corpses), the
situation was considered permanent and the nails could
not work themselves loose.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------

Tuggin’ On The Lead Rope!

A friend of mine, Rod Erickson, from Spirit Lake,
Idaho, wrote a song by this name and it has continually
come into my head for a number of months. That means
there is significance to it. So, I went inside to get
some answers.

Interesting, it is, how I get all my answers from
"inside".

That is, of course, the subject today.

All of us are well trained in the worldly ways of doing
things. And, so long as it is "by the book" then we
feel we should be okay. Yet, the Henry Fords, the
Thomas Edisons, the Firestones, and even the space
program, have all gained because they stepped outside
"the box", outside "the book" and went for something
new.

When you are out there, you deeply feel like you are in
uncharted waters. Many times it is not comfortable.
That is when you must be acutely aware of Tuggin’ On
The Lead Rope!

It means that each of us has a "still, small voice
within" that is ready, willing and able to lead us to
our destination. Learn to be quiet. Learn to listen.
Learn to know the difference between your "wishes" and
your "leading".

Let me tell you this, when the Good Lord is Tuggin’ On
The Lead Rope!, I follow. That is when I am in control
with "superbrains doing the work for me". I listen and
I listen good when I feel the Tuggin’ On The Lead Rope!

When we proceed through life there are a great many
things to think about. Most folks have not the time, or
do not take the time, to think deeply on subjects,
trying to get to the bottom of "what makes things tick"
so to speak. Only when you do take the time do you get
answers, and when you begin asking "inside" for answers
you end up with answers that are true.

Sometimes we don't like the answers that come from
inside. Too often we discard them and go for what we
think is right, only to find that ultimately we have to
come around to what we were told in the first place.
Some fail in the attempt to do other than what they
were told, many struggle, but in the end it is what we
were told on the "inside" that prevails.

Fortunate is the man or woman who has learned to listen
to who is Tuggin’ On The Lead Rope! Those are the
people who will succeed. They are the ones who are
strong.

Go deep inside. Learn to listen. Apply this principle
to your circumstances and you, too, will emerge a
winner.

Learn to listen to who is ...

Tuggin’ On The Lead Rope!

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency
PART 9 of 11

Pretend you are alone at home and you suspect someone
is having an anaphylactic reaction. Your regular
physical assessment must include the airway, breathing,
and circulation. And don’t they all stem from the
suspected anaphylactic reactions? If you recall, the
signs and symptoms: they match these areas to be
checked. (ABC: airway, breathing, circulation) If
needed, CPR would be initiated. Call 911. Have someone
stay with the person in case more help is needed. A
health professional will give an Epinephrine injection
immediately. This opens the airways and raises the
blood pressure by constricting blood vessels. Many
people with known severe allergic reactions may carry
an Epi-Pen or other allergy kit. Please offer to stay
with them if you know they are having problem. (You
have no idea how much moral support is appreciated!).
In rare cases, emergency interventions by paramedics or
physicians may include placing a tube through the nose
or mouth into the airway (windpipe). This is known as
an endotracheal intubation. Sometimes emergency surgery
to open a space directly into the trachea and to place
a breathing tube may have to be done. This will be done
in an Emergency Room. The usual treatment for shock
including intravenous fluids and medications to support
the heart and circulatory system will automatically be
started. A common translation for anaphylactic shock is
“bloodless shock”. The body reacts to any shock when it
presents itself.

When I was a very green nurse, I was called to a
neighbour’s home. Her children couldn’t wake her up. In
front of her on the table lay several pill bottles and
a few pills. I called her doctor (…this was before 911
was available). He called the ambulance and then rushed
over from his office. All arrived at the same time, and
recognized her as a chronic alcoholic on many meds.
They couldn’t wake her either. It’s hard to distinguish
when someone is having trouble breathing. We had her on
the floor by the time everyone arrived and her
breathing was already better. But everyone felt she was
in a serious enough a condition to need further
hospitalization. Don’t take any chances! I want to
share another story. A few years ago, one of my
associates in our hospital was stung by a wasp. Her
sister rushed her to a local doctor’s office. He was a
brand new grad and had his new “bag” close by. It
contained one vial of adrenalin! (Epinephrine) By this
time she was already loosing consciousness. They got
her to the hospital five minutes away. There they
worked on her for the next six hours. Being “one of us”
as a staff member made the situation a bit eerie. She
then went to ICU overnight and was released the next
day. She was very lucky to be alive! This happens very
fast and it needs to be recognized for the emergency it
is.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Bob took her advice and looked at Tim, never
wavering. Before he knew it he was at Tim's
side and handing over his daughter. Then, as
Sharon had told him, he turned, spotted his wife
Harriett, and walked deliberately toward her. When
he was at her side he breathed a sigh of relief.
Harriett put her arms around her man. They hugged.

Sien went through a few things and then they
all returned unto shore. "The ceremony may be a
little longer because of the words I wish to
speak, but that is what will be happening
tomorrow. Does anyone have any questions?"

No questions were raised. The socializing
continued.

Tom and Tlang slipped away down the road for a
walk. They were walking hand in hand. The road was
a country lane, wide enough for only one vehicle.
Tall trees on each side had branches that met
in the middle of the road way up high. The road
was mostly in shade. It was a nice cool place to
be on a hot day. The road was only dirt. It had no
improvement.. Tree roots stuck up here and there
just waiting to injure a toe that stubbed up
against them. When it rained it was mud and sand.
It meandered around the lake, parallel with the
shore, with cabins and properties between it and
the lake shore.

The lovers walked slowly, not going anywhere,
just being together. Tlang did not speak any
English, but that didn't bother Tom. As they
walked along, the road began to climb and as it
did they left the side of the lake and were out in
a prairie grass field. The field was not used or
cultivated. It was just grass. Tom walked Tlang a
little further, climbing all the way and soon they
were atop a large hill that had a commanding view
of the lake. They could look back and see the
Henry cabin. It wasn't hard to spot, what with the
crowd and all the kids in the water.

The evening was drawing to a close. The sun
was just beginning to set over the hills on the
west side of the lake. The sight was beautiful. It
was even the more so for young lovers. Tlang put
her head on Tom's shoulder. It surprised her. She
had never done such a thing before, but it just
seemed like the thing to do.

Tom turned his head and looked at her, then he
turned to face her. He took her face in both his
hands, gently, raised her lips and placed a tender
kiss on them. Then he kissed her again, then
again, then he opened his mouth and she opened
hers and they kissed. He put his arms around her.
She put her arms around him. The engaged in a full
blown embrace where their souls became one.

It was a powerful embrace with lust running
rampant within their veins. Yet it was much more
than that. Their hearts were singing the praises
of love. They wanted one another, yes, but this
love was euphoric more than lustful. If they could
have merged their bodies at that point they would
have. They just wanted to be permanently attached,
never to let the other go. Their hearts were
pounding at an alarming rate.

This time may have been a wedding for Tim and
Sharon but, in truth, Tom and Tlang then and there
became soul mates forever. The very instant they
"knew" is when they had the visitor. While the sun
was setting in the west there was another
brilliant light that came toward them from the
south.

Both Tlang and Tom were aware of company. The
love they were feeling between them, while
intense, was not to be compared to the love that
was coming toward them. They broke apart, still
holding hands, and faced the oncoming light.

They knew. Jesus spoke quietly and with love.
"Unto you is given the gift of love. Spread it
amongst mankind that they may follow your lead.
Unto you is given equality and from you Tlang all
impediment to higher law is removed. You shall
henceforth forever go forth and show the world the
kingdom of your Maker. Proceed with love. I shall
be with you tomorrow." With that Jesus reached
forward and touched an arm of each of them, and
then the light began to fade into the distance.

Tom and Tlang stood there bathing in the love
they had been given. Speechless, there was no need
for talk. They now had the ability to communicate
with thought alone. Tlang had been rendered equal
with Tom in that she now was a master who lived by
higher law.

She knew it, yet it was no surprise to her for
it was just a small step. She had been prepared
for this by Riata.

Slowly they, arm in arm, began to walk back
downhill. They made their way back by way of the
country lane they had earlier travelled. Still
they did not speak. It was as if they were joined
at the hip. They knew where each was going. They
knew the heart of each other. They knew the next
move each would make. As they walked they shed a
light that encircled them. Neighbors came out of
their cabins to the road to watch them pass as if
they had been called out to do so.

HA! HA! HA!

A customer at Green's Gourmet Grocery marveled at the
proprietor's quick wit and intelligence.

"Tell me, Green, what makes you so smart?"

"I wouldn't share my secret with just anyone," Green
replies, lowering his voice so the other shoppers won't
hear. "But since you're a good and faithful customer,
I'll let you in on it. Fish heads. You eat enough of
them, you'll be positively brilliant."

"You sell them here?" the customer asks.

"Only $4 apiece," says Green.

The customer buys three. A week later, he's back in
the store complaining that the fish heads were
disgusting and he isn't any smarter.

"You didn't eat enough, " says Green. The customer
goes home with 20 more fish heads. Two weeks later,
he's back and this time he's really angry.

"Hey, Green," he says, "You're selling me fish heads
for $4 a piece when I can buy the whole fish for $2.
You're ripping me off!"

"You see?" says Green. "You're smarter already."
