Why do we call coffee "Joe"?

Ever wonder how that morning "cup of Joe" got its
moniker? Here's one explanation: In days of yore, the
US Navy served wine on board its ships. But that
stopped when Admiral Josephus Daniels became Secretary
of the Navy. Admiral "Joe" banned wine from the
officer's mess, except on special occasions. Peeved
sailors began to sarcastically refer to their coffee,
one of the few drinks permitted, as a "cup of Joe.".

What does it mean to say someone has "bought the farm"?

It's not good. To say someone has "bought the farm"
means that person has died. The phrase dates back to
World War II and was used as a form of dark humor among
US combat pilots. Many of those pilots longed to be
done with war and return home to buy a small farm to
retire on. When a pilot died, his comrades would often
say that he had "bought the farm."

FCC: Broadband Lines Soar 34 Percent in '04
by Wendy Davis

BY THE END OF LAST year, high-speed Web access in the
United States jumped 34 percent to 37.9 million lines
for all U.S. businesses and households--up from 28.2
million in 2003, according to a report released
Thursday by the Federal Communications Commission. The
FCC also reported that growth in high-speed access
accelerated toward the end of the year. The number of
lines providing access at 200 kpbs or more in one
direction grew by 17 percent in the latter six months
of last year, compared to 15 percent in the first six
months.

Most of the connections were via cable-modems, which
accounted for 21.4 million high-speed lines; DSL
service was responsible for 13.8 million of the lines.

In May, Jupiter Research reported that 31.9 million
U.S. households now have cable--a 34 percent
year-over-year growth from 2003. Jupiter also found
that cable providers account for 63 percent of the
market, while DSL providers were responsible for 35
percent.

PricewaterhouseCoopers also recently released a report
predicting that broadband will surpass dial-up within
five years. "Internet advertising will grow rapidly,
fueled by an expanding broadband subscriber base and ad
formats geared to broadband, such as keyword search and
full-motion video," stated the report.

Anaphylaxis: A Medical Emergency
PART 10 of 11

A vasovagal reaction is sometimes confused or mistaken
for an anaphylactic reaction. Again, nurses are trained
to recognize the difference. And again, it takes
practice and speed to do this. Basically it is a
reaction to the procedure rather than the chemical
“stirring up” of the ingredients of the “intruder” I am
sure you have heard of people fainting at the sight of
needles or blood. Some faint when the needle is
actually put into their body. It happens within the
first few minutes after the injection. Although this
too is an unwanted reaction, it is much more “welcome”
by a health care provider than an anaphylactic
reaction. In giving flu shots, nurses experience this
one more frequently and deal with it in a much more
“relaxed” manner. I recall a very busy evening flu
clinic in a huge warehouse. There was a lot of
goofiness going on and no one was really being serious
about the injections. Suddenly I heard loud crash. “My
last injection” had passed out and was caught between
two chairs. He was very large. It took some maneuvering
to get him on to the floor. (I always make my patients
sit down for the injection and for a couple of minutes
after it.) We ended the evening in a very subdued
manner. One more short story. If you instinctively know
you don’t want this injection, don’t have it. I had a
grandfather who passed out three times in ten minutes
(from one injection!). His granddaughter had challenged
him to a flu shot! He didn’t want to tell her that
while in the army, he passed out each time he was given
an injection. Eventually they gave him only when he lay
down! He didn’t want her to find out he was a sissy!
Pride goeth before a fall, and in this case, three
falls. Use some common sense.

What is the difference between these situations? In a
vasovagal reaction, the person looses momentary
consciousness, or just feels very faint (lightheaded).
Their pulse is weak and they are often cool to the
touch. Here is a good site to learn more.
http://www.hrspatients.org/patients/signs_symptoms/
fainting/default.asp

We put cool, moist cloths on people’s foreheads or the
back of their necks. We get them to take deep breaths.
This usually lasts a few minutes and the person is
fine. Always, the nurse will take a respiration, pulse,
and blood pressure reading. These are excellent
indicators of their state of health at that moment.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

----------------

Tom and Tlang made it back to the Henry place.
They had taken over an hour to get back, but to
them it was as if an instant. Sam Henry came out
to meet them and embraced them both. All present,
but the Smithsons, knew what had happened. From
that moment Sam and Alewka knew they had gained a
daughter-in-law.

Mae Wiley, witnessing from a distance, was in
tears. They were the tears of joy and sadness that
go along with the changing of a chapter in the
book of life. Her dear and beloved Tlang had found
a love of her own. That was both sad and joyful to
Mae. She wept.

Mae was extremely proud her Tlang had met up
with Tom Henry. She had nothing but respect for
the Henrys and their children. To her there was no
finer man in earth Tlang could have found to
marry. Even though Tlang was still in her teens
and, by most standards a little young to marry,
Mae knew the kids would wait until they were
older. Nonetheless, the union of souls had been
made.

Something else Mae knew was that Tlang had
accomplished living by higher law.

Mae walked up to Tlang and gave her the hug of
a lifetime, "Welcome to higher law Sweetheart. And
I see you found yourself the man of your dreams. I
am happy for you."

Tlang had matured instantly from little girl
into a mature woman during all this and she
reacted as such. "Thank you Mae. I have you to
thank for who I am today. Thank you for finding me
and bringing me to the orphanage."

"Sweetheart, nothing happens by coincidence.
We were supposed to find you and you are supposed
to be here. You will be called upon to share your
knowledge and power with those less fortunate just
as you enjoyed us sharing with you. It is only
part of the system Tlang and what a blessing it
is."

Mae walked up to Tom and gave him a hug.
"Thank you Tom. I couldn't have picked a better
man for my Tlang even if I had tried. I think this
is wonderful and you have my blessings."

Bob and Harriett Smithson were confused by the
attention now being paid to Tom and Tlang. All the
guests wanted to see them. They found Sharon and
asked her and Tim what was going on.

"Mom, Dad, I'm going to tell you something you
might find hard to believe. I am not lying and I
am very serious about what I will tell you. I want
you to believe me. Tom and Tlang went for a walk,
as young lovers are prone to doing. They
eventually ended up on top of that hill over
there. They kissed for the first time and they
kissed again and again, until they knew they had
to spend the rest of their lives together. Then
they had a visitor. Jesus came to them. He blessed
their union and caused Tlang to be able to live by
higher law. Then as a rememberance of his visit he
touched each of them on the arm. At that point
there was a heart shape mark that is permanently
etched on their arms. Those who know Jesus can see
it. Those who do not cannot."

"Oh, Honey. That can't be."

"Yes, Mom," said Tim, "it can be and that is
what happened."

"But Jesus died on the cross. He cannot be
here."

"Mom, if you read your bible you will know
Jesus appeared unto many after the cross. He can
do so today just as he did then. It is you who
crucified Jesus. It is you who doesn't believe in
his abilities. It is you who thinks that man has
now come so far that he knows Jesus cannot do
this. Yet your thinking is incorrect. You are
following what you have been taught in church and
the message you are getting is wrong." Sharon was
getting pretty firm and authoritative in her
communication.

"Honey, I don't know."

"Mom, Dad, there has been much happen here
today, even by and with yourselves. You have done
things, each of you, that you have never done
before. You have seen things happen you never
thought possible before I met Tim. It is now time
to open you mind to all the possibilities. Life is
not what you think it is. There is much more to
life and living than you have considered up to
now."

"Sharon, dear, I believe you." Bob Smithson
broke into the conversation, "Before now I
would not have, but I have not walked on water
before and I would swear it was not possible,
until today. I can see we have not been paying
attention to the real message. I can see where we
have fallen into a pattern of behavior based on
incorrect knowledge. I can see those hearts on the
kids arms."
