ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
How did the term "Indian giver" come about?
The phrase "Indian giver" (to mean a person who gives a gift
and then wants it back) does NOT reflect the nature of
Indian gift-giving practices, but is rather an erroneous
description of practices that non-Native Americans did not
understand. In some American Indian cultures, giving a gift
meant that a gift of similar value was to be returned. In
certain tribes, this made gift-giving almost competitive, so
that a person who wanted to establish status or embarrass a
rival would give a large gift in the hope that the returned
gift could not match it. This, of course, did not mean the
gift-giver wanted his gift back, only that he expected
reciprocity. Those not familiar with the culture
misinterpreted the practice and assumed it meant a person
wanted his own gift returned to him.
Were most Native Americans killed in warfare by American
settlers?
Many Native Americans were killed in armed conflict with
white settlers, but the primary cause of death was more
indirect. Settlers coming to the "New World" brought germs
that Native Americans had not developed an immunity to.
These invisible microorganisms, such as smallpox, measles,
and influenza, decimated the natives of North, Central, and
South America.

Tips And Tidbits
Changing Channels and the Rise of Podcasting
by Mark Kingdon
Reaching a mass digital audience is getting easier as
megaportals and search engines capture an ever-larger number
of eyeballs. But crafting a compelling message, separating
yourself from the competition, and reaching time-, and
attention-, starved audiences are getting more complex as
wholly new digital constructs gather momentum.
The digital medium is experiencing the same channel
proliferation TV faced a decade ago, to the power of 10. The
staggering number of programming choices isn't the only
challenge. The real killer is there isn't a single remote
control, screen, or access device, as there is with TV.
Digital marketers know all too well how much thought goes
into reaching people nowadays. A couple years ago, a sound
digital marketing plan included a dot-com Web site, some
smart ad buys on portals and targeted sites, e-mail, and
search. Today's digital marketing plan must consider all
that, plus a huge array of new options, such as SMS, video
over the mobile phone, product and ad placements in video
games, viral marketing, blogs, vlogs, and ads delivered
through TiVo and other DVRs. Compounding this complexity,
new digital media options reach a critical mass every couple
months. And many of the newest media lack the measurement
advertisers require before they spend real money.
The latest big-noise (literally) digital medium is
podcasting. Think of it as radio on demand. Like blogs,
podcasts are free (for now) syndicated content. An RSS feed
points to the latest episode.
Although it's no more complex than downloading an audio file
to your iPod or MP3 player, until recently the medium has
had limited appeal for content creators and marketers
because the audience was so small (the devices hadn't yet
reached critical mass). Clearly, the medium is still young.
You could buy only eight books on podcasting on Amazon.com
last week, compared to 94 for blogging, and 534 for Internet
advertising.
With widespread adoption of iPods and MP3 players, the
addressable audience has gotten much bigger. Jupiter
Research estimates 18.2 million units will be shipped this
year.
Said David Card, Jupiter Research VP and senior analyst, in
the press release: "Historically, any new device or medium
that reaches a U.S. household penetration of 15 to 20
percent creates a critical mass of customers for other
products and services. MP3 players will hit that mark this
year. This is good news for both digital download stores and
subscription music services. Subscription services and
devices will fuel each other's growth."
Seth Palmer, an engagement manager at my agency, active
blogger, and aspiring podcaster, had a great dialogue with
me about this latest digital medium. He pointed me to a
press release issued just two days after iTunes 4.9's
release, in which Apple reported over 1 million podcast
subscriptions through iTunes.

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 8 of 31
The extent, location and severity of an infection is,
of course, important, but so is its duration. In the
aforementioned example, such a gum infection would be
considered to be both acute and chronic. Meaning it was
serious and would be active 24 hours a day, 365 days
per year; for as long as the gum disease was present.
Unfortunately, for tens of millions of people, this
infection could be present for many, many
yearsprogressively getting worse. It should no longer
be difficult to imagine the stress this infection
places on the immune system.
Another important fact to consider is that dental
infection may not always be obvious or easily
identified. Often, there is no pain or overt symptoms.
It is an insidious disease and, if left untreated, will
continue to destroy both gum tissue and the underlying
bone. But whether you are consciously aware of it or
not, this infection poses a serious threat to your
overall health.
Dental Disease and Its Relationship to Other Diseases
An increasing number of studies demonstrate the
relationship between dental disease and other diseases
of the body. Ive provided a brief description of the
etiology (underlying cause) of dental disease and its
damaging effects. The following section will provide
documentation that conclusively links dental disease to
other serious and life-threatening diseases.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

"But Ben, it is so far away from what others
are doing, how did you know?"
"Sam Henry is a friend of mine. We go back a
long way. My wife and I have spent time with the
Henrys and Sam and I have talked. I just made the
decision, that's all."
"It sounds easy."
"Only after the fact, Harry. From your point
of view it really looks hard and until you get all
the formula you will think it impossible, yet it
is the only way to live, listening to your Maker,
inside. It was Jesus who made it known what to do.
If you don't believe me, or Sam Henry or Jim
White, or Darryl Sparks, then go to your own King
James version of the Bible. Look up Matthew 6: v
19-31 and Matthew 21: v 21 & 22.
"What will that show me?"
"The way."
"What? You mean it has been in the Bible all
this time and people don't see it? What's wrong
with the church? Don't they see it?"
"Certainly they see it, Harry. But then, if
all their parishioners lived by higher law there
would be no need for the church, would there?"
"Are you saying the church is deliberately
misleading their people?"
"All I am saying, Harry, is look at the facts.
You make up your own mind as to who is doing
what."
"Whoa, Ben. That's a big one."
"Sure it is Harry. Yet look. The truth is
hidden only from those eyes that do not want to
see. Look."
"Ben, that's a big accusation."
"Is it? Did I make an accusation? I thought I
just wanted you to see a biblical scripture. All
the rest happened within your own mind, Harry.
Nonetheless, I am not here to make life peaceful
or comfortable. It is only when you commit to
higher law that will happen. Until then your life
will be filled with strife and striving. If you
choose to look at the facts, that is up to you. If
you choose not to, that too, is up to you."
"Ben, you're sounding hard core about this.
Like there is no middle ground, no room for
negotiation, rigid."
"I am, Harry. You can't be a little bit
pregnant. You either are or you aren't. There is
no middle ground. You don't live the life of your
Maker sometimes and go back to what you are doing
at other times. You either live by higher law or
you do not."
"That sounds pretty tough to me, Ben."
"That is simply the way it is, Harry. I don't
set the rules and I don't create them. They work
one way only. Yet that way is available to every
person in earth. It is merely a matter of choice."
Ben was calm and quiet, broadcasting love. He
wanted to make sure these ideas were getting into
Harry's mind.
"Hello, Mr. Penderay. I'm Eloise Henry." She
put her hand out to shake Harry's. "Hello, Ben.
How are you?"
"Fine, Missy, and you?"
"I'm terrific. What are you guys up to? Oh
here comes your wife, Mr. Penderay."
"Hi honey." said Harry as he put his arm
around his wife, Shirley, in greeting. "I was just
talking to Ben here about higher law. He's being
like the policeman he used to be, tough. He's not
giving me any ground, room to move."
"Then don't talk on that subject." Shirley was
pragmatic about the whole matter. To her, things
were black and white. To her there was no middle
ground. She was an excellent candidate for the
rules of higher law.
Ben looked at Eloise and the pair of them
smiled. "Shirley, I was only saying that living by
higher law was a matter of making a decision and
sticking to it, that there was no living it
sometimes and slipping back to man's world at
others. One either lives by higher law or they
don't."
"Ben, that sounds perfectly right to me.
Choose and do. That is the one area of our
marriage Harry and I have trouble with. He keeps
thinking there is middle ground everywhere. It
comes from years of negotiation practice. The word
is compromise. Yet, I would hate to think my Maker
would compromise the rules for some and not for
others. It doesn't make sense."
Ben again looked at Eloise. Here was a woman
who did not live by higher law but she had a very
clear understanding of the rules thereof. Again
they smiled.
"Well, maybe we should change the subject.
When she gets into her black and white mode there
is no reasoning with her and I can see that is
where we are going." Because of the love Ben and
Eloise were broadcasting Harry was not expressing
anger. He was merely stating the facts as he
understood them.

If this occurred, we did not charge our customers.

The customer asked to see the photos, and when I noticed the
