TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

Who was the first US president to travel outside the US?
Is it true that human skin is almost as thin as a few sheets
of paper?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What type of plane is Air Force One?
"Air Force One" is the radio call sign to designate any
plane the President is aboard. There are currently two
planes in the presidential fleet. When the president is
aboard either plane, or any other Air Force aircraft, the
radio call sign is "Air Force One." The two planes in the
current fleet are specifically-configured Boeing 747-200B
series aircraft. Both can accommodate about 70 passengers
and are capable of flying half way around the world without
refueling.
Does the White House have elevators?
Yep, three of them, in addition to 8 staircases.

You Teach People How to Treat You
So often we hear people ask the question, "Why does
he/she/they treat me/us so badly?". The honest answer, in
most cases, is "Because you let him, her or they!"
If that seems too simple an answer, think of it this way.
You make a date for lunch with someone new. They arrive
twenty minutes late, citing traffic, office hold ups, the
weather, their car or their kids. Of course, things do
happen to detain even the best intentioned person. You
accept the apology and have a lovely lunch. The next time
you have lunch with this person, they are thirty minutes
late. Aha, there may be a pattern developing. What do you
do?
Unless you do not mind this behavior, you then have the
opportunity to teach that person how to treat you. Good
communication skills come into play. You can say something
like, "One of the things I've found works for me is to be
honest with people. I really enjoy your company and would
like to continue meeting for lunch. I know things come up
at the last minute and sometimes traffic can be horrendous.
I'd like us to agree that either of us can leave if the
other is more than fifteen minutes late? Would that be all
right with you?" This clearly communicates what you need
and want without ascribing blame. It builds relationship
when you make clear agreements with people. Would it be all
right with you if an employee came to work consistenly
one-half hour late? No, there is an agreement about the
starting time, isn't there? The same is true of our own
time.
One of my favorite quotes comes from John Powell. In his
book, The Secret of Staying in Love, he wrote that "the
genius of good communication is to be totally kind and
totally honest at the same time." I repeat this quote often
to remind myself how to approach teaching people how to
treat me. If I do not tell the truth about what works for
me, I cannot expect another person to honor and respect it.
Learning to teach people how to treat us takes practice.
You may still have folks who have been in your life for a
long time who take advantage of you, treat you poorly, or
are angry, abusive or violent. A habit has been established
and they may like it a lot! Consider telling them the truth
about how their behavior affects you and what changes would
make the relationship feel more respectful and caring for
you. Be both honest and kind. Be prepared to have to
repeat this information consistently over time. It is
sometimes "inconvenient" for these folks to remember that
you have now stated your preferences. They may not want to
change. Holding these boundaries also requires attention on
your part. Once you have asked for the change, you must
insist on it or consider giving up the relationship. Both
of these tasks take positive self-esteem and
self-confidence.
Relationships worth having are mutually respectful and
responsive. Think about how you might like to apply these
thoughts in your daily life.

The Relationship of Oral Health to Overall
Health and Longevity
by Tom McGuire, D.D.S.
PART 10 of 31
In regard to longevity, the most noteworthy finding was
that periodontal disease and poor oral hygiene were
stronger indicators of premature death than of coronary
heart disease. Young men who had a maximum oral hygiene
index of 6 had a three to four times higher risk of
dying than those who had a hygiene index of 0 (the
higher the number the more serious was the gum
disease). In addition, young men with periodontitis had
a nearly threefold increased risk of death from
coronary heart disease and about a 50% increased risk
of admission to hospital for coronary heart disease
then those without it.
When compared to subjects with little or no periodontal
disease, individuals with gingivitis (the less severe
form of periodontal disease) had an approximately 23%
higher risk of premature death. Those with
periodontitis, or no teeth, had about a 50% higher risk
of dying. From a health standpoint, these findings
could be significant because gingivitis is far more
common than the more severe form of the disease. But
left un-treated, gingivitis will quickly lead to the
more severe form of gum disease.
Another Study Another study, K. J. Matilla explored the
relationship between oral health and heart attack. It
also examined the role of chronic bacterial infections
as risk factors for coronary heart disease and the
association between poor dental health and acute
myocardial infarction (heart attack). The selected
patients had worse dental health than controls matched
for age and sex. The study showed that the relationship
between dental health and heart attack remained
significant even after adjustment for age, social
class, hypertension, serum lipid and lipoprotein
concentrations, smoking, presence of diabetes, and
serum C peptide concentration (which reflects
resistance to insulin).

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

Harry and Shirley weren't sure they wanted to
do this. Yet the love Ben and Eloise were
broadcasting made them calm and willing to partake
in this conversation. "I will look that up,
Eloise."
"Good."
"Hello, folks! How are you today?" Mazunta put
his hand out to shake the Penderay's. He could see
the puzzled look in their eyes. "I belong to this
young lady here. She let me marry her and have
children with her and today she tells me what to
do and where to go." Maz had a glint in his eye.
There was laughter all around.
Shirley Penderay was not quite prepared for
this man. She, like all the rest of the woman at
the gathering, had seen him and been watching him.
He was one to swoon over, but now he was right
here in front of her and her knees grew weak. He
towered over her and he was such a fine specimen
of a man, broad chested, muscular, and a
gentleman. It was all she could do to keep from
making a fool of herself.
Maz and Eloise knew what was happening. It
happened nearly every time they were speaking with
a North American woman. Inside themselves they
smiled. Maz handled the matter like a gentleman.
"I'm one of the results of the trip Eloise
took to South America, so maybe her trip wasn't
all good." He winked at the Penderays.
Another laugh.
"Where do you folks live?" Harry couldn't
remember ever seeing Maz around town. It sparked
the question.
"We still live in a quaint little village in
South America. I fell in love with the place
during my trip and simply went back. Of course I
knew this big guy was there. He had already asked
my folks for my hand in marriage, so when he asked
me I thought hard, for maybe a second or two and
then said yes."
More laughter. In her mind Shirley was
thinking, "Yeah, I don't know if I would have
thought that long."
"What do you do there, for a living I mean?"
"Shirley, you're asking if we have jobs?"
"Yes."
"No we don't. You think people must have jobs
to live. They don't. We live in a place where the
only shelter we need is a grass hut. Food and
water is abundant and our clothing requirements
are very simple. We have no car, no TV, no radio,
no material goods of any kind."
"How can you live like that? Everyone needs
something."
"Shirley, again, you are appraising everything
from singularly your own perspective. You think
the only way to live is the way people in North
America live. Further, you think that is the only
right way to live and that any other way is wrong.
When you live by higher law you can manifest
anything you need, when you need it. There is no
need for money. You are having a hard time seeing
your way through that concept."
"I guess I am."
"One day you will have to come down to visit
us to see how we live. I think you might find it
appealing. Certainly Maz and I do, as do David and
Pam Wiley."
"They live there too?"
"Yes. David found himself. who he was, while
down there and decided to go back as well. He took
Pam with him and the pair of them have been there
now for 12 years. They have two children as have
we and they are all doing well."
"What about schooling? How will they learn?"
"Shirley, again you have not thought through
the question. We are all teaching our children
higher law. In fact David's first one is nearly
there. When you live by higher law you have all
knowledge available to you. There is no need for
schooling as you think of it."
"I don't understand. Then what do you mean by
higher law?"
"Man knows of two sets of laws, Shirley. He
knows of the physical laws and the mental laws.
Yet there are three. There are the laws by which
this entire universe functions. They are the
spiritual or higher laws. Man has not yet found
those. Only a few men have dared to walk that
path, Jesus among them, and it is their work to
aid mankind in the discovery and use of higher
law. Higher law is the set of laws your Maker
wants you to use in your life. You can find them
by going inside in meditation, as I did. When you
discover them you will not go back to what you are
doing now."
"You are trying to tell me that I can do
things with my mind that I am not doing now, bend
spoons, for example."
