Can newborns recognize their mother's face?
Surprisingly, yes. Full-term infants have exhibited the
ability to recognize their own mother's face as early as
four hours after birth. Infants also show a marked
preference for their mother's voice AND for their mother's
odor.
Do babies dream?
No one knows for sure, but babies definitely enter into REM
sleep, even while in the womb. (REM sleep refers to a sleep
cycle where observers can witness rapid eye movements of the
sleeper. Adults dream during this state.)

In Haiti, only 1 out of every 200 people own a car. This is
ironic considering approximately 33% of the country's budget
on import is spent on equipment for fuel and transportation.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW . . . with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
-----------------
Removing The Creative Clutter From Your Head
Have you ever felt that you could really get something
wonderful and worthwhile done if you didn't have so many
things to do? Common thought.
Your mind is so cluttered with great ideas, current
projects, social obligations, long-term plans and upcoming
appointments that there is no room for creativity. In fact,
some days it seems amazing that any thought can make it all
the way across your mind, doesn't it?
We become immobilized, unable to make progress, even though
we may be very, very busy. It's a paradox. We are working as
fast and hard as ever and still we seem to be treading
water. The shore never gets any closer. That's because your
mind works in strange ways. It has no sense of past or
future, so, that everything you've ever told yourself you
should or could do, your mind thinks you should be doing
right now. So, your mind sets you up for failure.
I have been caught this way. It is so self-defeating...and
exhausting. So many great ideas for projects, businesses,
conversations, seminars all rushing around in there....all
chasing one another. So, I went looking for the magic bullet
that would put an end to my misery. I looked in the obvious
places: get a new organizer, a new at-a-glance something
that would keep me on track, a new PDA to make everything
work together; clean the office, clear out the in-box. All
were promising, but none cleared the clutter from the
inside, even though my office was immaculate. Problem:
clean space but head still full. I only looked organized.
The search continued. Finally, a colleague told me about
some ideas he had been working from that made a huge
breakthrough in his organizational thinking. OK. I'll try
anything.
First key is to get all the ideas you have--and I mean ALL
the ideas--on to paper or into your computer. ALL!! That is
one massive mind dump. Every thought, idea, plan, project,
wish, want, need, relationship, value...and then some. It's
essential to actually clear the mind of it all in order to
be able to focus on one thing at a time.
That's the beginning. Once you have every single
thing--idea, object or piece of paper--in your in-box or
in-bucket, then, and only then, you begin to process.
Cleanse first, then clarify.
Pick up each item from the in-dumpster. Do you know what
to do with it or about it?
Decide if it is actionable. What is the next action step you
need to take on each item? The best organizing guru I know,
David Allen* says that if the answer is 'No!' then it's
either trash needing to go, something that might need to be
done later (incubate) , or potentially useful information
that might be needed for something later. In that case, it's
a reference piece. Makes sense. You can now manage these
three categories. If the answer is 'Yes", you have to figure
out the next action to take. David Allen says then you have
to do it, delegate it or defer it. And the system continues.
The first and most important part, though, is getting your
mind clear of clutter so that you can bring your complete
attention to the task at hand. You have taken care of those
fleeting thoughts. You've captured them on paper or on
screen. You have decided on the next action step for each
item. Now, you're ready for action. Your presence of mind
will improve. You can easily bring your mind to one thing at
a time.
This is the key to being...and feeling...truly organized.
Stress is reduced. Focus returns. Clarity is restored. You
know what to do. You are back to being productive and you're
swimming in the right direction. Great system!

Detoxification
A Natural Body Function: Does It Really
Need To Be Helped Along?
PART 3 of 11
Medline has many excellent resource links, but no
encyclopedia descriptions.
http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/mplusdictionary.html.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detoxification Detox, short
for detoxification, in general is the removal of toxic
substances from the body. It is one of the functions of the
liver and kidneys, but can also be achieved artificially by
techniques such as dialysis and (in a very limited number of
cases) chelation therapy. Other less mainstream methods for
eliminating toxic substances from the body include the
modification of the diet and addition of certain herbs and
rituals such as colonic irrigation, juice fasting and sweat
lodges. All these methods claim to assist the body's natural
detoxification process.
.And it continues: Forms of
complementary medicine that claim to remove such toxins from
the body: for instance, by herbal, electrical or
electromagnetic treatments. As the definition of toxins in
this and the previous context has little scientific basis,
the validity of such techniques is questionable. There is no
evidence for such accumulation; the liver and kidneys
automatically detoxify and excrete many toxic materials,
including metabolic wastes. Under this theory if toxins are
too rapidly released without being safely eliminated (such
as burning fat that stores toxins) they can pollute the body
causing malaise. I am leaving the links intact so you may
follow up more.
I think this is the best site for description and
explanation! Although Kids Health site is geared for
pre-adults, it has a lot of practical and logical
information, so we can all benefit from it.. Are Detox
Diets Safe?
http://kidshealth.org/teen/food_fitness/dieting/detox_diets.
html First, let's look at the lingo. A toxin is a chemical
or poison that is known to have harmful effects on the body.
Toxins can come from food or water, from chemicals used to
grow or prepare food, and even from the air that we breathe.
Our bodies bring in toxins and then process those toxins
through organs like the liver and kidneys and eliminate them
in the form of sweat, urine, and feces. What Is a Detox
Diet? So the basic idea behind detox diets is to temporarily
give up certain kinds of foods that are thought to contain
toxins. The idea is to purify and purge your body of all the
"bad" stuff. Although the diets vary, most of them involve
some version of a fast, that is, giving up food for a couple
of days, and then gradually reintroducing certain foods into
your diet. Many of these diets also encourage you to undergo
colonic irrigation, otherwise known as an enema (an enema
flushes out your rectum and colon using water), which is
designed to "clean out" your colon. Still others recommend
that you take herbal supplements to help the "purification"
process.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
I can't help but feel there is going to be some nucleur
trouble over this Korea issue. N. Korea is stepping up the
rhetoric somewhat dramatically and having shown complete
instability in the past this could easily, too easily, rush
into a launching of a missile armed with a warhead.
The U.S. feels pretty confident it can stop such a missile
and has enourmous resources on site, yet it may happen.
I am not sure I like the idea of a pre-emptive strike but
that may be the only thing that stops a maniac from turning
loose a nucleur bomb.
I am not one who is pleased much with the state of world
affairs. It seems everyone goes for the throat too fast.
They each claim their right, just as the U.S. had the right,
to build their own nucleur weapons but the countries who
want to do this are sworn enemies of the U.S. while the U.S.
is not with territorial intentions toward them.
The fight seems to be moonbeamish - fighting over principle
without regard for real results. Those in power appear not
to care for their people or what will or can happen if they
turn loose such horrific weapons.
It's no wonder I like to go inside to meet with my Maker.
Peace, joy and prosperity live there.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Machiavellian: How did the word "machiavellian" come to mean
"evil"?
Niccolo Machiavelli of Florence wrote a book called "The
Prince." It expounded the art of government and showed how
by treachery and other despicable acts it was possible for a
prince to achieve and uphold arbitrary power.
