Is Christopher Robin Milne still alive?

Is Winnie-the-Pooh's last name "Sanders"?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How many languages are represented in the Library of
Congress collection?

The Library of Congress houses more than just English texts.
Approximately 460 languages are represented.

Is Winnie-the-Pooh a boy or a girl bear?

Winnie-the-Pooh, like virtually ALL the characters in the
famous Winnie-the-Pooh children's books, is a boy. (Only
Kanga, the mother kangaroo, is female.) But the bear Winnie
is based on was female. Christopher Robin liked to visit
"Winnie" (short for "Winnipeg") at the London Zoo. She was a
bear cub, found by a Canadian lieutenant, who became the
mascot for a unit sent to fight in Europe in World War I.
She was later donated to the zoo, where Christopher Robin
met her.

Here's To Think On . . . with Ken Darby
-----------------

Don't Do This!

A fellow walks into a bar, and it's empty except for the
bartender at the other end of the bar washing some glasses.
The bartender says, "Have a seat anywhere and I'll be with
you in a few minutes. There's a bowl of peanuts on the
counter, have some while you wait."

So the fellow sits down and grabs a handful of peanuts, but
he hears someone say, "Hey, that's a sharp suit you've got
on." Well, the bar is empty, so the guy wonders where in the
world that voice is coming from.

He takes another handful of peanuts, and again, a voice
says, "And that's a nice tie that goes really well with that
suit." By now the fellow is really baffled. The bartender
comes over and says, "Ok, what'll you have, mister?"

The fellow says, "Listen, before I order, I want to ask you
a question. Where are those voices coming from?"

The bartender replies, "Oh, I forgot to tell you, the
peanuts are complimentary.

Wow! It took me a while to figure this one out. Maybe I am
half asleep today, but this joke didn't really register with
me until I thought about it for a while.

Don't do this. In all your writing make things as clear as
you possibly can. If your prospect, your reader, your
audience has to take time out to think about what you have
said, only to understand it, there is little likelihood they
will react the way you want.

If your audience has to do any thinking at all, about what
you say, it should be thinking about acting or not acting,
NOT thinking about "What was it you said?"

A long time ago, and many times, I was advised to keep any
writing I do at the grade six level. That meant to use
words, phrases and terms those in grade six would
understand.

I remember thinking, at the time, I considered that nearly
an insult to my readers. After all I was dealing with folks
much more educated and sophisticated than that. Over the
years, however, I came to understand what that instruction
meant.

It did not mean to write or speak from an attitude "above"
your reader or listener. It meant that nearly all folks can
easily understand when material is written at that level.
The object of the exercise, after all, is to promote action,
not to confuse or have a reader take extra time just
figuring out what you said.

Besides, it is a joy to write and even a joy to read when
things are clear enough to require little effort to
comprehend. Readers like that because there is far too much
to read, and to do, in living one's life these days.

Writing at the grade six level is a compliment to the
reader. It invites your reader's attention because he knows
you are not going to make him/her work.

So, please remember, you can make it confusing, but - - -

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Some Thoughts About Soy
PART 1 of 5

I wanted to share some thoughts with you about soy. I
received two bulletins lately. And the comments reflect my
perceptions. And as usual please don’t use them to make
serious medical decisions.

I have never been a great supporter of soy. For some reason
all the hype makes me nervous and suspicious. Because I work
with people suffering with symptoms related to Meniere’s
“disease”, I am always on the lookout for salt content. And
with soy, it’s all over the map! So when I received these
two more bulletins on soy, I decided to find my information
written by Dr. Mercola’s a few months ago. This is the link
to the entire article.
http://www.mercola.com/2005/feb/26/soy_myths.htm

Dr. Mercola’s refers to a book by Dr. Kaayla Daniel's The
Whole Soy Story: “The Dark Side of America's Favorite Health
Food”. Just please read all three pieces of information.
Then start thinking seriously about your understanding of
soy. If you have children on this product, please be aware
of what you are giving them. There could be a downside to
this food. My idea is to alert you if you have symptoms as
mentioned in the book or the article, then at least explore
this more. Maybe a little soy is not a problem, but how much
are you eating…

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

-----------------------END DISCLAIMER

It seems to me that whatever press you read there is nothing
but troubles reported. For example there was another tsunami
in Indonesia that killed 60 people. More Israeli strikes in
Gaza and Lebanon, still trouble with the North Korea issue
and Iraq and Afghanistan are still boiling pots of civil war
brought on mostly by insurgents from Iran who don't want
peace.

Elsewhere we have the Amazon rain forest slowly disappearing
and causing much trouble. About 17% of the rain forests have
been cut, both legally and illegally. The cut areas no
longer draw rain and are causing droughts of unheard of
proportions in areas that have not been without rains for
centuries. What rain does fall on those cut lands washes so
much silt into the rivers that it plugs them. Some rivers,
more than a mile wide and up to 300 feet deep have dried up.

All this for man's greed. It is so foolish for when one man
gets money all he does is spend it. It really doesn't do him
any good or mankind any good, yet it continues.

The problem with logging in the Amazon is that it removes
the earth's chief source of oxygen. One day we will see
studies of what troubles that will end up causing.

So, we have the earth warming and melting the ice caps at
both the north and south poles. We have a prediction of oil
running out in the forseeable future. We have wars on on
fronts and to add to the troubles we see we have the
greatest oxygen producing resource on the planet
disappearing. And you know what? Not one person is doing
anything about any of it.

Oh! We have politicians running around trying to look
important. Many of them think they are really contributing,
but when you have the American government paying out
$100,000.00 to a "Director of Lessons Learned" and with
other officials with titles like "Ethics Advisors" and
"Director of Fast Checking" then you can see where the
emphasis of the government is. Certainly not on issues of
importance.

Again, I suggest you go inside, meditate, and learn to
commune with your Maker. There, alone, will you find peace
and power.

Police Quotes . . .

"The handcuffs are tight because they're new. They'll

"If you run, you'll only go to jail tired."

"So, you don't know how fast you were going. I guess that
means I can write anything I want on the ticket, huh?"

"Yes sir, you can talk to the shift supervisor, but I don't
think it will help. Oh, did I mention that I am the shift
supervisor?"

"Warning! You want a warning? O.K., I'm warning you not to
do that again or I'll give you another ticket."

"The answer to this last question will determine whether you
are drunk or not. Was Mickey Mouse a cat or dog?"

"Life's tough, it's tougher if you're stupid."

"No sir, we don't have quotas anymore. We used to have
quotas, but now we're allowed to write as many tickets as we
want."

"In God we trust, all others are suspects!"
