What is the longest migration for a land animal?

Is it always raining in a rainforest?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

How long does the Arctic tern's migration take?

Half a year. Apparently, this bird LIVES to migrate.

What mammal has the longest migration?

The gray whale. We tend to forget about the sea mammals when
we think "mammal," but the whale definitely qualifies. The
gray whale travels about 12,000 miles per year.

HERE'S TO THINK ON . . . with Ken Darby
-----------------

You Just Never Know
When You Are Going To
Need Somebody!

A motorcycle cop was rushed to the hospital with an
inflamed appendix.

The doctors operated and advised him that all was well.
However, the patrolman kept feeling something pulling
at the hairs on his chest. Worried that it might be a second
surgery the doctors hadn't told him about, he finally got
enough energy to pull his hospital gown down enough
so he could look at what was making him so
uncomfortable.

Taped firmly across his hairy chest were three wide
strips of adhesive tape, the ultra sticky kind. Written in
large black letters was the sentence, "Get well soon! Luv,
from the nurse you gave a ticket to last week!"

I know the policeman was just doing his job, but the
joke does show us you just never know when you are
going to run into someone with whom you dealt before.

It is always good policy to be polite, courteous, sincere
and genuine, honest to an infinite degree, and clearly
socially acceptable. Sometimes, when we aren't that
way, we inadvertently stumble across the path of
someone we hurt or treated unfairly.

If there is one thing that is perfectly clear it is that
"What goes around, comes around." The chickens you send
out, are the ones that come home to roost, only they
are much bigger then.

I know I have written about being nice to people, before.
Yet the topic cannot be overemphasized. It is not so
others will benefit from you, that I say this. It is that
you will benefit from this policy, big time. That, after all is
the law. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap." It could not be
otherwise, and the person who has an acute
understanding of this law, has much better control
of their life than those who do not.

So it is wise to remember, if you don't want real sticky
tape, three rows of it, stretched across your hairy
chest, be nice.

You Just Never Know When You Are Going To
Need Somebody!

Diabetic Clinics And A Few
Concerns To Share
PART 1 of 6

I have just finished participating in a series of local
clinics on diabetes. This series was labeled “diabetic
education and screening”. The clinics were sponsored by
a major food chain and its in-store pharmacies. It was
very interesting to note the interest and questions of
both the pharmacy staff and the clients in each
different location. Levels of participation varied from
store to store. It was quite remarkable. Affluence
didn’t come into this: locations certainly did. All
clinic hours were identical. Just the locations were
different: different sections of a large metropolitan
city.

The purpose of each clinic was to do blood sugar
screening and diabetic teaching for the general public.
Many of these people just wanted to know if they were
healthy or “at risk”. As I have found out in many
public places, if I haul out my blood pressure cuff and
stethoscope, I attract people. There seems to be
something comforting or reliable about the old cuff. At
this clinic series, this didn’t happen. People were shy
to come forward and have their blood pressure taken. We
invited them to join us…then they wouldn’t leave!

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

The northern hemisphere is really getting the heat. Europe
and the British Isles are feeling it and so is North
America. France fears another round of deaths from heat and
around the hemisphere folks are doing all sorts of things to
keep cool.

Use of air conditioners is so great there has been a
growing number of black outs because of power outages.
Transformers blow up and all sorts of power problems are
created.

If you are suffering from heat ensure you drink lots of
water. Get in cool water if you can. If you are out and
exposed to the sun keep your head and body
covered to protect you from the heat and sun.

I wish you all well. Remember you can go to the mall, they
usually have air conditioning. Some folks check into hotels
because they have swimming pools. Do what you have to and
remember - safety first.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Take A Gander: Why do we use the phrase "take a gander" to
mean "take a look"?

The month after a wife's confinement was once called "gander
month" or "gander moon" - in allusion to the aimless
wandering of a gander while the goose sits on the eggs.
During this period the husband was called a "gander mooner"
- and pleaded a certain amount of indulgence in matters
pertaining to sex. So, originally, to "take a gander" was to
"take a walk and give the gills the eye" as a "gander
mooner" would do. The phrase as we use it today retains some
of this meaning.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"The longer I live, the more I am certain that the
great difference between the great and insignificant is
energy - invincible determination - a purpose once
fixed and then death or victory." -- Sir Thomas Fowell

HA! HA! HA!

It was the day after Christmas. The pastor of a church was
looking over their Nativity scene when he noticed the baby
Jesus was missing from among the figures.

Immediately he turned and went outside and saw a little boy
with a red wagon, and in the wagon was the figure of the
little infant, Jesus.

So he walked up to the boy and said, "Well, where did you
get Him, my fine friend?"

The little boy replied, "I got him from the church."

"And why did you take him?"

The boy said, "Well, about a week before Christmas, I prayed
to the little Lord Jesus and I told him if he would bring me
a red wagon for Christmas, I would give him a ride around
the block in it."
