TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

How much of the Earth's surface is covered by tropical
rainforests?

Was Christopher Columbus really the first explorer to
discover America?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Are rainforests found only in South America?

Not at all. Tropical rainforests are found in a belt around
the equator (mostly in South America, Central America,
Africa, Southeast Asia, and Australia). But temperate
rainforests are found along the Pacific coast of the United
States and Canada, as well as in New Zealand, Scotland,
Ireland, Chile, and Norway.

What is the temperature in a rainforest?

Not as hot as you'd think. In a tropical rainforest, the
temperature usually is between 75 degrees Fahrenheit and 80
degrees Fahrenheit. Temperate rainforests rarely get over 80
degrees Fahrenheit.

Crossing Customs!

In the days when you couldn't count on a public facility
to have indoor plumbing, an English woman was planning
a trip to Germany. She was registered to stay in a small
guesthouse owned by the local schoolmaster. She
was concerned as to whether the guesthouse contained
a WC. In England, a bathroom is commonly called a
WC, which stands for water closet. She wrote the
schoolmaster inquiring as to the location of the
nearest WC.

The schoolmaster, not fluent in English, asked the local
priest if he knew the meaning of WC. Together they
pondered possible meanings of the letters and concluded
that the lady wanted to know if there was a
"Wayside Chapel" near the house...a bathroom never
entered their minds. So the schoolmaster wrote the
following reply:

Dear Madam,

I take great pleasure in informing you that the WC
is located 9 miles from the house. It is located in the
middle of a grove of pine trees, surrounded by lovely
grounds. It is capable of holding 229 people and is
open on Sundays and Thursdays. As there are many
people expected in the summer months, I suggest
you arrive early. There is, however, plenty of
standing room. This is an unfortunate situation,
especially if you are in the habit of going regularly.

It may be of some interest to you that my daughter
was married in the WC as it was there that she met
her husband. It was a wonderful event. There were
10 people in every seat. It was wonderful to see the
expressions on their faces. My wife, sadly, has been
ill and unable to go recently. It has been almost a
year since she went last, which pains her greatly.

You will be pleased to know that many people bring
their lunch and make a day of it. Others prefer to wait
till the last minute and arrive just in time! I would
recommend your ladyship plan to go on a Thursday
as there is an organ accompaniment. The acoustics
are excellent and even the most delicate sounds can
be heard everywhere. The newest addition is a bell,
which rings every time a person enters. We are
holding a bazaar to provide plush seats for all since
many feel it is long needed.

I look forward to escorting you there myself and
seating you in a place where you can be seen
by all.

Sincerely,
Schoolmaster

So, if you were the English lady receiving this reply,
what would you think? Quite humorous, isn't it?

That is the kind of thing that happens when you cross
customs or traditions. Never mind the language
differences, there are many, many customs that are
different as you travel from one local to another. In fact,
it is said that in India you can run into a different set of
customs and language every twenty five miles.

All this comes from the old days when people never
used to travel. Many would live and die within a
twenty five mile radius of where they were born. As
a result you would have customs evolve in an area
that were not shared by those twenty five miles away.
That is the same all over the world.

Then the industrial revolution hit and people began
to travel. That is when we began to see all these
different conditions. When air travel became affordable
to the bulk of North America and Europe thousands
of people began to travel. They then found what we
are speaking of here.

Today, with the internet rapidly becoming the chief
method of communication we are crossing all
boundaries.

The point we are getting to here is that when you are
writing, phoning, or otherwise communicating with
folks in different parts of the world, any further than
twenty five miles from your home, you should be
aware that not only does language change slightly,
but so do customs.

When addressing people away from your home it
is good to be conscious of these subtle changes.
What seems common and ordinary to you may be
quite foreign to the person you speak with.

A good rule to follow when you are away from
your "home grounds" is to behave, everywhere,
as if you were a "guest". Watch people's customs,
assume nothing, and ask permission to do things.
Nothing gives you the right to walk all over people
and their customs, even if you are paying for the
privilege of being there.

Crossing Customs!

Nothing will aid your journey to your objective as

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Diabetic Clinics And A Few
Concerns To Share
PART 3 of 6

Many times I told someone that this was their body: not
their doctor’s body. They have to suffer the side
effects. I frequently wonder if they had really read
the accompanying instructions when they picked up their
prescriptions. I doubted it. The same goes for any
prescription or even “over the counter” (OTC) meds.
There is so much you can do before you have to resort
to any medications. Your doctor’s office staff should
be able to direct you to a more helpful lifestyle or at
least to one of the many teaching sites that are
available. The Internet is full of good places to get
healthy living information. Yes, there are questionable
sites too, but you have to persist. It was really
interesting to note that the people who attended the
clinic with the highest participation rate were going
to go to the local library as they had no Internet
access.

A lifestyle change doesn’t have to be expensive or
complicated. It simply takes a bit of effort and I
guess a fear of living a “less than desirable ”
functional future, to start. But it sure beats having
your toes numb and bleeding from frequent bashes into
chair legs because you can’t feel pain. (Impaired
circulation is a possible complication of long-term
diabetes.) We met one gentlemen and his concerned wife
in their early fifties. He was on diabetic medications
but had never been tested or giving any sort of
teaching before being put on the drugs. Please know
that this should be far down the road. Long after you
have tried changing your eating and exercise habits.

And blood pressure as well as cholesterol-lowering
medications!!! My goodness...the whole world seems to
be on them, plus tranquilizers! Frequently, as I took
their blood pressure I asked if the person had an
elevated reading other times, as mine was quite low.
Often people would tell me they were a bit lightheaded
or dizzy. They had no energy. I came across several
people with muscle pains in their legs. (If you are on
any meds, PLEASE read the possible side effects. They
happen very frequently.)

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

I see they are now thinking heat may be used to fight
cancer. It came about as a result of an observation about
men's testicular cancer where the testicles are ordinarily a
few degrees cooler than the rest of the body. Apparently
sperm cannot live at the bodies normal temperature.

When warmed they also apparently fight cancer. The medical
community is now trying the process on other forms of
cancer.

I see by the headlines that the world is still doing its
thing. Wars, fights, natural disasters and chaos all seem to
be having their place in the sun.

And speaking of sun it appears as if Europe and the British
Isles will finally get a break from the heat. Storms are on
the way. Now for the American southwest.

I wish you all peace, prosperity and serenity.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Umpire: Where does the word "umpire" come from?

From the Old French word nompair, meaning "not paired". The
"umpire" is the third or "not paired" person called upon to
decide between two contestants.

"Doing my Christmas shopping early sir", replied the

"Well that's not an crime", said the judge! "How early were
you doing this shopping?"

"Before the store opened", answered the prisoner.
