Mac- and PC-compatible hardware, a bit larger in
size than a pack of cigarettes, is a 802.11g transportable

broadband connection at home or away to create a
wireless network, or use it to extend an existing wireless

My Thoughts On Suicide Prevention
PART 1 of 6

These will be very personal remarks, and not from a
trained suicide prevention point of view. As a nurse,
people expect you to have some answers, and often
we don't. So we hide behind platitudes, knowing we
hurt just like the others who are looking to us for
support. As I grew more interested and wiser, I started
to better questions. I now listen a lot more and am not
so quick with easy solutions!

It took me along time to realize just how real and final
suicide is. I have personally been affected by it in
several ways. I really didn't feel I had much to contribute
until I made some comments to people without
understanding the impact or far-reaching effects these
words would have. It seems to me that once we get
to a certain stage of depression, most of us live without
hope. We really don't know where we are going and
have nothing to go "towards". We are constantly
bombarded with negatives and shocking news
world-wide. I know it is the job of media to sell their
products, but we have made TV our main source
of entertainment (and babysitting as well). So we
make ourselves comfortable to enjoy an evening
of entertainment. And this entertainment is going
to a bit negative.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

The pig was the first one up and foraging around
for something to eat.

Because of the late night the ladies slept in a
little and it was near two hours past first light.
They got up, had a bite to eat and were on their
way.

Shing Li's baby was a well seasoned traveller. She
gave not one moments trouble. Of course being
held, along with the contstant joggle of walking,
made her quite content.

They had not walked four hours when they first
spotted the village. "That is my village." said
Shing Li. She became a little excited.

Within the hour they were standing on a bit of a
hilltop looking down into the greenest valley Mae
and Susan had ever seen. The valley was ringed
with high hills, even mountains, outcroppings that
stood tall amongst the other hills.

The valley below was filled with rice paddies and
there was a large border of trees between the
level rice paddies and the protruding mountains
and hills.

As they stood on the hill the village was much
closer than it had been when they first sited some
of the tops of the buildings.

The village was situated on this lower end of the
valley, nestled snugly into an area between
mountains and valley. It was almost inaccessable
from the side the little group stood, except only
by the road they were on. The only part of the
village that had exposure to the outside world was
the side facing the rice paddies and was thus
rather easily defendable.

Shing Li said the village had been there for over
five thousand years.

The rice paddies had people working in them,
ladies mostly, with their wide brimmed hats to
ward off the sun, bent over picking or planting,
up to their mid calfs in the water. There were the
familiar earthen walls between the rice paddies
upon which people walked from one of the paddies
to the next, and they stretched for as far as the
eye could see, up the valley.

The whole valley lay in a southeasterly to
northwesterly direction, permitting it to get
sunlight for nearly the entire day.

The village, however was built so close to the
mountains and the cliffs were so steep, that it
was in shade from mid afternoon until first light
everyday.

The entire scene was beautiful, peaceful,
pastoral. Every once in a while there was a rice
paddie in which the worker had a cow working along
side, and, nearer the village in a meadow not used
for the growing of rice there were many cattle,
pigs, goats and other animals grazing peacefully.

There were also village children running, playing,
laughing and having fun. That was the only noise
from the village that reached up the hill to where
the ladies stood.

"Come, I will show you where I live. My husband
used to work those two paddies over there, until
his accident. Now the village has taken over and I
no longer have any food. It is too early yet for
men to come calling on me, so I must make out as
best I can. That is why I was on my way to the
city. There, I thought, I could earn enough to
feed my little girl." said Shing Li.

"Fear not Shing Li, you shall have enough food to
feed your family, and if you can make clothes then
you can clothe your little girl as well as sell
clothes to the villagers so you have money to
buy other things you might want or need. You shall
be looked after, by your Maker, and, if you so
choose, learn to live by higher law." said Susan.

They began to walk down the hill toward the
village. They became suddenly aware of many eyes
upon them. The villagers knew long in advance the
little group was approaching. All were wary until
they recognized Shing Li, then they all went back
to their work or play.

Soon they were walking into the village on the
only road that led there. It was the same dusty
road that had been used for millenia.

The buildings were made of bamboo walls with grass
thatching on the roofs. All was in a good state of
repair, except, possibly, the buildings that were
not lived in, but used for storage. Some of them
appeared to have fallen on hard times. Otherwise
the village was neat, clean and tidy, well
maintained and appeared prosperous.

As a concierge at a posh resort, I was often asked about
the ski facilities. One day a couple who had just checked
in after a long flight came by and asked me where the
lift was.

"Go down the hill," I told them, "out the door, past the
pool, 200 yards down the block, and you'll see it on
your right."

Their tired faces suddenly looked even more exhausted,
until the man behind them spoke up. "These folks are
from England," he said. "I think they're looking for the
elevator."
