Who was Daedalus?
Is it true that neckties date back to ancient times?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
Haven't we been doing that for centuries?
Sure, in a fashion. The ancient Chinese, for example,
sought to make artificial silk by studying how the insects
did it. But only recently has a whole discipline focused
on studying nature to develop technology emerged.
Many robots are now biologically inspired.
How was velcro inspired by nature?
The inventor of velcro, George de Mestral, thought up
the idea for the useful fastener by studying something
that annoyed him: those burrs that stuck to his pants
whenever he went out walking in the woods! He
examined burrs under a microscope to figure out what
made them stick so well, and noticed that Mother Nature
had designed burrs to have hundreds of tiny hooks that
"grabbed" into loops of thread or fur. Voila! Velcro
was born.

Values Change With The Generations!
by Ken Darby
When my father-in-law decided to move after his
retirement, he invited us to his home to take a few pieces
of furniture he wanted us to have. One item was beautiful
but very heavy, an antique dining-room set. Our teenage
son helped us wrestle the set into our truck. It took the
whole day, but finally the table, chairs, and china cabinet
were sitting in our dining room.
"Just think," I said as I admired the furniture while my
son sat resting. "This set is 100 years old. And someday,
it will belong to you."
"Oh, no!" he replied with a stricken look on his face.
"You mean I'm going to have to move this thing AGAIN?"
And that is what happens. The things you value now you
may not have valued when you were younger, that's true.
However, your values have also changed from what your
parents values were. And you can bet your children's
values will be different than yours.
This article is not saying that is good or bad. I am only
saying it is. My concern is that you might pronounce it
good or bad. Don't.
You see, if we insisted that our children do everything
we do, the way we do it, there would be no progress at
all. Oh, yes you must provide guidelines and the discipline
to keep them within the guidelines, but they should be set
for your children's benefit, not yours. In other words they
should be set to permit growth and imagination in your
children.
Yes you want to teach them the principles of honesty,
integrity, manners, courtesy, politeness and, hopefully,
humility, but let their imaginations roam. Encourage them
to do things you, at their age, wouldn't think of doing.
Encourage them to do things beyond their ability levels.
Encourage them to develop their own set of values,
which might not match item for item with yours. Show
them how to be resourceful, to make their way in the
world, not your way in the world.
It is true you must prepare them to live in the adult world.
Yet the adult world they will grow into will be entirely
different than the one you grew into. Keep that in mind
when yo are preparing your children to take over
government and industry. Keep in mind these are the
people you want to continue your pension.
You cannot expect them to live in the same world as you.
Show them early that values change and that's okay. Just
because you like that dining room suite you moved today
is no requisite your children must like it. Know that.

COMPUTER TIPS - - -
-------------------------
Registry Restoration
If you have backed up your registry files (System.dat
and User.dat) and find yourself having royally messed
these files up, you can restore them in DOS with
the following procedure:
1) Boot to DOS
2) Type each line followed by Enter; this turns off the
file protection and allows them to be overwritten
(substitute the correct drive letter and path for these
files' current location if c:\windows\ is not correct)
Attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\system.dat
Attrib -r -s -h c:\windows\user.dat
3) Now type each line as it appears, substitute a:\ for whatever
drive and path you have saved these two files to (you
did save them, didn't you?)
Copy a:\system.dat c:\windows\system.dat
Copy a:\user.dat c:\windows\user.dat
This should return those files to their former state
from the time you originally saved them.
By the way, DO save them.

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure
PART 2 of 8
When you are at the scene of an accident, what is one of the
first things that paramedics do? They take a "blood pressure".
That's an indication of its importance. Lastly I would like to
tell you why donating blood is a good thing for most people: why
you might want to share it with someone who is struggling to
stay alive.
Let's start with blood and what it is... As you will see
shortly, blood has a crucial and very specific purpose. If
something is abnormal, the fulfillment of its purpose is
interrupted or changed. Your blood's mission is to keep you
alive and well. Its purpose is to provide you with nutrients,
oxygen, and chemicals, and to remove waste products. Blood is a
liquid made up of several parts including red blood cells
(erythrocytes), white blood cells (leukocytes), and platelets
(thrombocytes). It carries these nutrients, chemicals and
oxygen.
"Hemoglobin" is the red pigment in red blood cells. It
transports oxygen. It is the most important part of the blood.
Red blood cells are known as "Erythrocytes" in medical
terminology. Their purpose is to carry oxygen and a small amount
of carbon dioxide. Blood that carries oxygen is called
oxygenated blood. Without oxygen, your body cannot live. White
blood cells are known as leukocytes. And there are several types
including granulocytes, lymphocytes, and monocytes. Leukocytes
are meant to fight infections. They are part of the inflammatory
process, which is part of your body's immune system. Leukocytes
are responsible for the elimination of bacteria, fungi, and
viruses. Platelets (thrombocytes) are part of a cell and are
responsible for blood clotting.
http://www.yourbloodcenter.org/glossary.htm
Red blood cells that are filled with oxygen are known
"collectively" as "oxygenated blood". It is bright red.
De-oxygenated" blood (oxygen removed) will look darker compared
to oxygenated blood. When it shows up in the skin, it is called
cyanosis. In a trauma, it is fairly easy to see if an artery or
vein is cut by the colour of the blood and the pressure with
which it shows up. An artery will spurt bright red blood, while
a vein produces dark slower moving blood. Serum or plasma is
what is left after the "solids" are removed.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

They talked for a while and then turned to Mae.
"You are welcome, so long as you do no harm to the
people of this village. Some who become angry
because you do not give them candy, will always be
like that. We have decided you are good people or
you would not have asked us here to discuss it. We
know the people of whom you speak and we will talk
to them. If any of our villagers wants to learn
from you, you wil teach. That is what the elders
have decided. We will inform the village."
"In that case let us eat. Come, Shing Li wants to
show you something."
Shing Li took the elders into the house into the
common room and then into what might be called a
kitchen, certainly the area of the house where
food was prepared.
She asked each, in turn, what they would like to
eat. When each offered her a suggestion she would
reach into her "magic box" and pull out exactly
what the elder wanted.
After the first one, the elders oooooed and
aaaahed. They were surprised. Each became
progressively more brave in their requests. Each
time they received the exact meal they were
thinking of. The last elder asked for a plate of
food that was not commonly available here. It
consisted of seafood and some exotic vegetables.
Shing Li reached in and out came his meal, exactly
as he had envisioned.
That "magic box" was the talk for the rest of the
meal. The elders did not understand how this could
happen.
Shing Li explained she was given that box by Mae,
who required she sew garments to earn her living,
but that she must give away at least one garment a
month free. If she failed to do that the box would
not produce food and she would go hungry.
"What is the meaning of this?" asked the elders of
Mae.
"Shing Li had lost her husband. No one in the
village was helping her. She was on her way to the
city where she hoped to sell her pig and hopefully
find work. If she did not find work she knew not
what lay in store for her. It seemed to us this
village might have helped her out. Surely someone
here cares for those less fortunate than
themselves. We did not persue the question. We
knew that if Shing Li could eat, then she could
sew garments for sale for all else she needed.
However, the village should also see her
kindnesses and learn from them, so it is
necessary for her to care for and love others
that they might live better lives. You may take
from this talk what you will. This woman will
always help where others will not. The village
should learn this lesson." said Mae.
"Life is hard in this village. We do not have
anything to spare." said on of the elders.
"Would you have let her die if she had remained
here?" asked Mae.
"No we would not want that." answered the elder.
"Then is it not better to help while she is still
able bodied and willing to contribute? Or would
you have her become ill before you would help her?
At what point does your kindness begin?" asked
Mae, being somewhat hard on the elders.
"We did not know she had left. We did not know she
was in trouble, or without food." answered the
elder.
"Did you know her husband had died?" asked Mae.
"Yes." said the elder.
"Then how was she supposed to eat? What could she
do to earn enough to eat? She can sew clothing,
but she cannot sell them in this village for
anything more than a pittance. To earn her food
she could do nothing. None of you are ignorant of
that. All of you knew that, yet the village
preferred she were gone, so others could have this
house. Is that the way this village looks out for
it's neighbors?" Mae was really laying it on.

A company, feeling it was time for a shake-up,
hires a new CEO. This new boss is determined to rid
the company of all slackers.
On a tour of the facilities, the CEO notices a guy
leaning on a wall. The room is full of workers and he
thinks this is his chance to show everyone he means
business! The CEO, walks up the guy and asks - "and
how much money do you make a week?"
Undaunted, the young fellow looks at him and replies,
"I make $200.00 a week. Why?"
The CEO then hands the guy $200 in cash and screams -
"here's a week's pay, now GET OUT and don't come back!"
Feeling pretty good about his first firing, the CEO
looks around the room and asks - "does anyone want to
tell me what that slacker did here?"
With a sheepish grin, one of the other workers
mutters - "Pizza delivery guy".
