What is the difference between an island and
a continent?
It depends who you ask. Geographers basically draw
the line at size: an island is much smaller than a continent.
Geologists, on the other hand, say that density makes
the difference. Continents are landmasses made of
low-density rock floating high on the molten mantle
below. Ocean crust is denser, so islands float low on
the mantle. Greenland actually fits the definition of
a continent. However, because of its small size (it's
about a third of the size of Australia), geologists
compromise by referring to it as a microcontinent.
Is Greenland green?
Nope. Greenland is mostly ice. More than eighty percent
of the island is covered in ice. So why is it called
"Greenland?" The answer provides an early example
of the power of marketing. Eric the Red, who discovered
Greenland in 982 AD, wanted to encourage his fellow
Norseman to settle the island. He didn't think that it
would be very encouraging to tell them all about the ice
and snow. So he called the land "Greenland" as a way
of making it sound a bit more comfortable. It worked.

I guess if you're a disgruntled engineer working for AOL
you have lots of opportunity. Look at this tidbit from
eMarketer Daily.

If you're an AOL member who is receiving a lot of spam,
Jason Smathers of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia is at
least partly to blame. Smathers, who until this week worked
for America Online, sold 92 million AOL screen names to a
Las Vegas spammer (Sean Dunaway, who has been
arrested along with Smathers). Though he accessed the
names, zip codes and other information from the AOL
servers, he was not able to take any credit card numbers.
Dunaway resold the list to other spammers at a later date.
Both face up to five years in jail in addition to fines. The
sale was discovered by AOL as part of a spam investigation.

I sure hope he got paid well. It looks like his living activities
for the next five years could be courtesy of the government.
Elsewhere, it seems, workers with internet access are doing
more personal stuff than they are doing work.
Surveys have shown many to be on porn sites while at work,
and management is now trying to combat the what they see
as a real problem.
And, on yet another issue, I have a question for you. I can't
help but see the incredible number of ads and email spam,
all wanting to sell viagra or copies thereof. Are we all really
so interested in sex that these spammers are getting sales?
What kind of a nation have we become?
Don't get me wrong. I think natural sex is perfectly alright.
What I am succumbing to now is the unparalleled preoccupation
about the subject in North America. Don't we have anything
else to do?
It is all explainable, of course, but we'll look at that another time.

Disk Cleanup
If you do not have any sort of disk cleaning utilities
such as Norton Clean Sweep, then Windows 98
has a built-in function called 'Disk Cleanup,' which
can eliminate unneeded files from your hard drive.
To run it, click on the 'Programs' menu, then select
'Accessories,' and finally 'System Tools'. The
Disk Cleanup program can then be run and will
determine which files it thinks it can delete. Always
remember, no deletion tool is fool proof. Accidents
can occur so remember to keep backups of
important files.

Blood, Its Circulation And Its Pressure

Use the machines in the pharmacies or supermarket, but stick to
one machine. The readings aren't the same, so don't compare the
readings. But here is a way to compare the readings "fairly".
Use the same machine, at about the same time of the day each
time you check it. Wear roughly the same type of clothing each
time. And don't pull up the shirtsleeve: it will block
circulation at the upper arm. To get a comparable reading you
might go every fourth day, at about noon to the local pharmacy
(where you also keep all your prescriptions and buy all your
"over the counter" products), and wear the nice cotton shirt
with light sweater. (Heavy sweatshirts will not allow proper
readings.) Take a few minutes to relax. Then put your arm, with
the shirtsleeve still buttoned and sweater in place, into the
arm holder, press the button, and wait for it to inflate.
Don't believe the reading? Do it again, BUT wait for at least
five minutes. Keep your composure or the measurement will be
even higher. When you repeat this, don't change anything. Get
another reading and then compare. Some food (salt) or beverages
(caffeine, alcohol), or medications can often change the
results. A "not so friendly drive" over might also have changed
the reading substantially. Did you know that a visit to the
doctors' office will really raise your blood pressure? It's a
proven fact and its called "white coat syndrome". Record your
readings and take the record to the doctor regularly. Pick up a
pamphlet from the pharmacist on how to interpret the readings or
ask them for help. The first time you get ready to take your
blood pressure reading, take the time to read the machine
instructions. I have often been challenged when I tell people to
keep the sleeves of their shirts smoothed and down. It tells you
on the machine! So read all the instructions. You will feel much
more confident in knowing you are doing this correctly. It's not
brain surgery, but it is very important to your health. It may
mean the difference between having to be on medication and
avoiding it. Try to always avoid drugs.they are chemicals that
your body has to neutralize somehow.
I'd like to end with a word about donating blood. The mission of
blood is to keep you alive and well. Its purpose is to take
oxygen, nutrients, and chemicals to your cells in all parts of
your body. You realise by now that you can't live without it. So
what happens when you find yourself without enough of your own
through illness or trauma? The obvious thing is to "borrow" it
from someone else. In hospitals, we used to give a lot of blood
transfusions. We don't do that any longer. There have been too
many problems with passing along unhealthy conditions. The gift
is still as incredibly helpful and necessary as always, but now
it's become very scarce. I have been donating blood for years.
It's part of my routine as I know how valuable it will be to
several people and to scientific research. But the rooms are
generally pretty sparse. Not so after 911! I was thrilled to see
the four hour waits! We snaked through rooms of chairs, were
given drinks at intervals, chatted with new friends or read our
books. And finally donated that precious gift of love. All of us
knew it was the only thing we could do personally to help ease
our pain. And we proudly sported our little teardrop-shaped
stickers on our chests. They read "Be kind to me: I gave blood
today"! The donation process itself may be a bit tedious but
blood is so valuable that, as with any gift you give, a little
inconvenience shouldn't stop you. Please consider becoming a
blood donor if you are healthy. And helping others is a purpose
for your own life. And keep in mind, all blood donation centers
now accept your blood for either yourself or someone in your
family in anticipation of a planned procedure. This is truly the
gift of life. Medical science has been developing all kinds of
practical substitutes, but nature still holds the secret to
keeping you alive long after the donated blood has outdated!

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to

He took a mighty downward swing. The axe hit the
shield with such force it turned the axe in the
man's hands and when it bounced back it hit the
man's leg with such force as to break it. There
was blood gushing out all over. The bone of the
man's leg was showing through the flesh. He was on
the ground threshing around.
He realized he was caught, that he couldn't get
out of there.
He set up an terrible racket. He was hollering for
help, crying, screaming.
Susan and Shing Li came running down the stairs
and to the back of the house. By this time Mae had
rendered herself visible once more.
The neighbors came out of their houses, many came
running to see what the trouble was.
By then the man had spotted Mae. When the
neighbors arrived he pointed to her, screaming and
hollering, "She did it! She did it!"
All eyes were on Mae. She simply closed her eyes
and concentrated for a short moment. Looking at
the man crying and squirming on the ground, she
quietly asked "What are you doing here with an axe
at this time of day, or, for that matter, any time
of day?"
"I-I-I did not come with an axe. You had the axe.
What are you doing here at this time of day?" he
was trying to redirect attention from himself.
It wasn't working very well. The townspeople
wanted to know what he was doing there.
The man did not answer. He well knew he has no
business being there at any time of day.
He was caught.
Someone had sent for the town medicine man. He was
not a trained doctor but had knowledge in the ancient
art of Chinese medicine.
When he arrived he had one look at the leg and
knew it was a very bad break. He signalled three
men to sit on the man's chest and hold him down.
He told them this would hurt and the man was going
to scream and hit.
Mae stepped in. "Doctor, please let me help. I can
maybe be of assistance where we need not hurt this
man any more.
The Doctor looked at her, questions in his eyes.
Mae looked at the man. "If you tell the people
what you were doing here and what your mission
was, I will cause your leg to become whole again,
without pain. If you do not tell these people what
you were up to I will let the Doctor fix your leg,
his way. Which would you prefer.
Mae has spoken with such authority it shook the
man as she spoke. He knew she meant every word and
was quite capable of carrying them out.
He spoke quietly, thinking that maybe people would
not hear, and he told his story. He was looking at
Mae with fear in his eyes.
The crowd ooooed and awwwed at the man's story.
They all knew he was wrong and must be subjected
to punishment.
Mae, when the man had finished, stood at the man;s
feet and looked him square in the eye.
Concentrating she commanded "Rise Up And Walk!"
She reached over and extended her hand to the man
on the ground. The moment he touched her hand he
became whole. He allowed himself to use her hand
for balance and upon standing striaght and tall,
he was once more whole.
The crowd once again ooooooed and awwwwed.
They had never seen anything like this. First the
man was lying on the ground crying and screaming
in pain, with the bones in his leg protruding
through the flesh. The next moment he was up and
walking around perfect.
The crowd could not understand that, but you can
bet the news was all over town, even before Mae
had finished.
