Giving Service!

An off-ramp of a freeway in Long Beach, California, has
been torn up for years. Recently, someone put up a
handmade sign reading,
"Scientists tell us that the sun will burn out in one and a
half billion years. It is sad that this contractor will have
to finish working in the dark."
Gee, I guess the contractor has a service problem. Other
things have affected this condition, I'm sure, and maybe
the contractor is not the one to blame. However, this little
quip points out something - service gets noticed.
Have you ever gone into a department store and had to
look around to find someone to help you, someone of
whom you could ask questions?
The next question is, how many times do you run into
that type of situation?
On the other hand I once worked in a service station
where the boss wanted us to wash the windows of every
vehicle on the lot, whenever one came in, plus, lift the
hood and check the oil of every vehicle at the pumps.
As a staff member, I can remember thinking, "Oh yeah!
Now he wants us to work like slaves. He has to pay us
more." Well, you know what? He did. That is to say he
had noticed that none of the other service stations in the
area gave service. So he saw "service" as a marketing
opportunity. Within two months our business was up
significantly and we all got a raise.
That is what I feel like when I find a store that offers
"Service". I want to go back. I want to deal there. I know
I can get straight answers concerning the reason I'm
there. I like getting service so I deal at the places that
give it to me.
I wonder how you are doing in that department? You
think service is something you should get only at a store?
How about offering it to friends when they visit? How
about giving service to everyone, all the time? Would
that make them feel special?
It all boils down to the law doesn't it? You know the law
I'm talking about, "As ye give, so shall it be given unto
you . . ." or is it this one, "As ye sew, so shall ye reap"?
Or maybe it's this one, "What goes around comes around",
or even this one, "The chickens you send out are the
chickens that come home to roost".
Platitudes come out of years of observation. You can
quickly dismiss them on the basis you have heard it all
before, but I ask you to think on this one because the
concept of service, everywhere in your life, will make
dramatic changes in the benefits you receive.

In many parts of the world, insects are a nuisance and a health
hazard. We are hearing about the West Nile Virus and think about
mosquito spraying. We want neither, so what can you do to
protect yourself...
If you listen to any sort of advertising, you
can't help but hear all sorts of experts speak about this or
that wonderful product. Still confusion reigns. We all recognize
that things are often not as they appear and on top of that, we
are subjected to activities which we discover only long after
they have happened. Although I am mainly I speaking here about
spraying for mosquitoes. If we had a choice, we probably
wouldn't want to be sprayed for "anything".
Sometimes we have a choice, but it has already been done
without our permission, in the guise of protecting the public.
So you are unknowingly exposed to these chemicals. And
this happens in many, many situations. More and more people
are now fighting back and protesting, but you can't protest
something you know nothing about. How else can you then
protect yourself? By increasing your awareness of harmful
chemicals limiting the "conscious intake" of these chemicals.
You need to use fewer chemicals and find more helpful ways
of dealing with unwanted, possibly harmful invaders. Here is

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

As you might expect, the crowd soon forgot
entirely about the man with evil intentions. They
concentrated on Mae. They gathered around, all
wanting Mae to help make them well, whole, rich.
"Men" thought Mae, "everywhere in the world they
are the same. You help out some and soon everyone
wants you to do something for them. No wonder
Jesus had to render himself invisible from time to
time."
That is exactly what Mae did. She made herself
invisible and then proceeded to the front porch of
the house.
The crowd turned to Susan. The thought was that
Susan, too, must be like Mae. They soon wanted
miracles from Susan. Her only defense was to do
like Mae. She disappeared before the eyes of the
crowd.
Then the crowd came toward Shing Li.
"Don't look at me! I can't give you any miracles.
What do you expect from these people? Do you
expect they will give you everything? Don't you do
anything for yourselves? Leave them alone. If they
can be of benefit to you they will but if you
chase them they will leave. Is that what you
want?" Shing Li was becoming authoritative, firm,
while withholding her temper and judgment.
She was finally able to disperse the crowd back to
their daily routines, except their routines would
never quite be the same. Mae's action of "healing"
the man changed the way the towns folk looked at
Mae and Susan.
Sitting on the porch, still invisible, the two
were talking, unheard by passersby.
"It is the same for all who live by higher law.
You get to do a genuine service for one, and every
man, woman and child present wants something. Men
are the same all over the world, greedy, selfish
and self serving. You would think they would learn
the laws wouldn't you?" said Mae.
"What now?" asked Susan.
"We'll see when Shing Li comes back. I think we
better stay around here today. Maybe things will
settle down today and we can walk about tomorrow.
If not then we will have to leave." said Mae.
Just then Shing Li was walking up the porch steps.
Mae and Susan made themselves visible, and Shing
Li came over to them.
"That man. He doesn't like me. He is the one I was
speaking to you about. He does things like that to
make me angry. Today I see him for who he is and I
feel sorry for him. He must be in emotional
turmoil always trying to think of ways to get at
me. He was going to knock down the center support
and my house would fall, wasn't he?" she asked
Mae.
"Yes. I was on my way into the village when I
noticed a fleeting shadow, running from building
to building. I made myself invisible and watched
him. He was coming here with an axe, I followed.
When he got behind the house he swung at the pole
but I had put up a shield around it. The axe hit
the shield and bounced. One of his swings he lost
control and the axe bounced right back into his
own leg." said Mae.
"The whole trouble is, Shing Li, he will not have
learned his lesson. When the crowd all mingled
around Mae, then myself, that is cause again for
making him jealous. That is why he was here. When
we went to the village yesterday he noticed all
the attention you were receiving. He didn't like
it and vowed to get back at you." spoke Susan.
"Get back at me for what?" asked Shing Li.
"That is just the point isn't it? For what? He was
just jealous of you getting all the attention
because we were your guests. Somehow jealousy
does that, warps ones thinking. That is what it
did to this man. Now he will be the more jealous.
We will have to watch, close." Mae was showing
Shing Li how man's thinking can too easily be
influenced wrongly by his own emotions.
"However, Shing Li, this brings up a problem. If
the villagers continue to throng around us
demanding we do things for them, we have to make
some decisions. We serve them not by giving them
all they ask. Some, of course, can and will be
healed, but the giving of food every day, the
giving of what they think will make them rich,
every day, that will not happen. We do not stand
for that. We will show all how to do this for
themselves, if they wish to listen. If they
continue to ask us for things, we will have to
leave, for it only does harm to them." Susan was
being very serious

I'm learning lesson about book publishing. It is much like
our North American style of life and living - hurry up and
wait. I have a time limit on getting the final draft of the book
ready for the publisher. I thought it was lots of time, but
yesterday my wife and I spent a combined eight hours
proof reading and find we have only scratched the surface.
Guess we have our work cut out for us, for a while.
