Is It Any Wonder?
Do You Speak English?

My family has a tradition of naming the cruise control on our
cars. We were used to hearing my father proclaim,
"Take it, Max," as he flipped on the cruise control during
long trips in our station wagon.
Recently, I was traveling with my parents in their new car
when we hit a wide-open expanse of highway. My dad
leaned back and said, "I think I'll let Tom drive for a while."
"Tom who?" I asked.
My mother translated for me: "Tom Cruise, of course."
Now do you see the reason for the title to this article? Is
it any wonder the language changes every twenty five
to a hundred miles? No wonder northerners think
southerners talk funny. No wonder they think Canadians
have accents. No wonder there are words in every
region that are different than in any other.
And then when you add the language of teens into the
admixture you really have a condition not even their
parents understand.
You know what I mean. "Awesome" can mean anything
from great or terrific to the exact opposite. Gruesome can
mean great, too. Then there is "cool" and "neat"
and "far out".
So, when an English speaking foreigner comes over to
North America and wants to fit in, they have to learn the
language all over again. And if you start using the words
that come out of Australia we all have a problem.
Now put together a web site that tries to have all English
speaking peoples understand it. There is a challenge.
I'm sure they are speaking words in New York City I
haven't even heard. On top of that new words are being
invented every day. Then there is the new language
sponsored by rapid technological growth that is
sweeping this country.
I am surprised we are able to communicate at all. They
say God confused the tongues at the building of the
Tower of Babel. I think he should pay another visit just
to straighten us out. We can cause enough confusion.
Then, on the other hand, maybe I'll put my wife to the task.
The other day she was painting parts of our new picnic
table, outside, before we assembled it. It began to rain.
She looked up and hollered "NO". It quit raining. I figure
if she talks to God and God listens she can get God to
square away our language issue. In any case you can
imagine I pay attention to my wife after that incident.

What to Use for Insect Repellant -- Hint: It's not DEET

local or national media, you would be convinced that DEET is the
best thing since sliced bread. Wrong.)

A recent NEJM showed that Insect repellants containing the
chemical DEET are more effective mosquito deterrents than other
synthetic repellents or plant-derived products.
DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide) is a chemical that was
patented by the US Army in 1946 and is still recognized as the
most effective mosquito repellent available. However, many
consumers may balk at applying DEET to their skin and instead
try plant-based products or other alternatives.
The researchers pitted several DEET-based insect repellents
against seven botanical products and another synthetic repellent
containing a compound called IR3535. The researchers also tested
three wristbands containing either DEET or citronella, a plant
oil common in botanical insect repellents.
They found that, overall, DEET products offered longer-lasting
mosquito protection to the 15 volunteers tested. A formulation
with 23.8% DEET provided just over 300 minutes of complete
protection, according to the report. That compared with about 23
minutes with the IR3535 product, and an average of less than 20
minutes for most botanicals, which were largely
citronella-based. None of the wristbands were effective.
One plant product was, however, comparable to the
lowest-concentration DEET product. This soybean-oil-based
repellent provided about 95 minutes of complete protection, on
average, the investigators found.
In addition, Fradin and Day tested a eucalyptus-oil product that
was introduced in the US after their study was completed. Among
six volunteers, the product provided an average of 2 hours of
mosquito protection.

Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

They chatted for another long while about what
Shing Li could do. She displayed a great deal of
interest and desire. Susan worked with her mostly,
as Mae looked on.
Mae thought she would make another attempt at
going through the village. She knew the risks but
thought things might have simmered down by now.
Saying "Goodbye" she walked out the door and was
away.
She walked calmly and slowly, walking with her
staff. She was expecting the villagers would
throng around her as she approached village
centre. She was therefore prepared to become
invisible and remove herself if it got to be too
great.
As she walked no one bothered her. Entering the
town square, she was aware others were watching.
She walked over to a restaurant and ordered some
food.
This restaurant was like some of the others where
they had eaten. She had to take her lunch outside
and sit at some tables that were placed there just
for that purpose.
Soon, she noticed two men walking up the street
toward her. One was supporting the other and they
walked eratically. Mae knew the one was blind, and
she knew who they were looking for and why they
were coming. As this was the first one and the
people of the village were being reasonable, she
made up her mind to help the man. She continued
with her meal until they got there.
"Ma'am" said the leader, "we heard of the accident
this morning and how you healed that man. May we
please talk to you about healing this man. He has
not seen for thirty years."
The man was humble and prepared to leave if he did
not get a positive responsed to his petition.
Mae was compelled to act. "Your sins are forgiven
you." she said to the blind one. "Rub your eyes."
The blind man did and as he was rubbing his eyes
he saw the first shafts of light. Mae heard him
moan and whimper. "I see! I can see!" the man was
about to break into a full fledged holler over the
miracle. Mae held him back.'
"Know this. You have healed yourself. The failth
you held in me was great. That is what made you
whole." said Mae.
"Thank you Ma'am. Thank you!" he went to his knees
and began to kiss Mae's feet.
She bent over to bring him to his feet. I did not
heal you. That you did by yourself. Learn this and
go forth to show others."
The man went jumping and hollering down the street
of town. His heart was filled with joy.
The villagers began to crowd around.
Mae spoke, "Think not that I come to perform
miracles. I do nothing each of you cannot do. I
will work with you and show you how you may do
this yourselves. Take heed. Listen, and ye shall
have everything you wish.

On this law is founded the workings of the
universe. You cannot afford the luxury of feeling
ill tempered toward another. The more you think of
harming someone, the more your life shall be
visited with misery, poverty and hard times."
There was a murmur going through the crowd. This
woman spoke with authority. She will change them
all. Some were scared, some were reluctant to
speak with her. Still others let fear run their
lives and developed jealousy.''
