What is a vexillologist?
A vexillologist is an expert in the history of flags.
Good to know there's a word for just about everything.
How do geckos walk up walls and across ceilings?
Scientists at the Berkeley campus of the University of
California have discovered how geckos can walk up walls
and across ceilings - they use atomic energy. Not like
what's in a nuclear reactor but something called van
der Waal forces, the weak forces of mutual attraction
between molecules. The trick, the researchers say, is
in the millions of microscopic hairs, or setae, that
protrude from the lizards' feet. These tiny hairs latch
onto surfaces so tightly that intermolecular forces
come into play. Most other animals use suction,
friction, glue or wet adhesion to stick to a surface.
The biologists and engineers have visions of
replicating the gecko's unusual ability. They say gecko
setae are self-cleaning and leave no adhesive residue -
a finding that one day may lead to the world's first
self-cleaning, dry adhesive.

Here's To Think On ...
with Ken Darby
------------------------------------
We Got A Big Dump Of Snow!
Mother Nature visited upon us a BIG dump of snow a few
days ago.
I bet I shoveled snow four different times that day,
with additional clean up each day since.
I am not complaining. I know there are lots of places
that get far more snow than we do here. However, the
word "surprise" comes to mind. We certainly were not
expecting it.
Spring is late where we are. Even though all the
wildlife is back and birthing is going on and rabbits
are changing colors we now, again, have lots of wet
snow on the ground.
It will leave soon and I know spring will be upon us in
a rush. With all this snow the lake in front of my door
will be high and we could be in for a good season.
Yet, as with a lot of things in life we are called upon
to be "flexible". We must "go with the flow". We should
"mellow out". Who expected this snow?
The universe, if we watch it, is trying to show us that
if we are still, quiet, within ourselves, and observant
we will see the laws that run our lives.
We will see that getting so involved with our projects,
such that any delay, interruption or detour angers or
frustrates us because we must get things done on man's
time is not our Maker's way.
If we took the time we would see where, using the laws,
we could accomplish much more, with greater ease and
much less stress. Such is the nature of Universal laws.
Each of us must make a decision. We must decide to
follow man's laws as we have been taught by our peers
or school system or we must decide to go with the way
our ancients taught, our Maker's way.
The one way, man's way, is filled with stress and
emotional upheaval, where our Maker's way is filled
with peace, prosperity, security and empowerment.
And, you know what? You don't have to leave the one to
get the other. You only must make a decision. Then
progressively, as with the hourglass, as one empties
the other fills, so, too, will you silently and
gloriously proceed from one ethic to the other. You
will always be in control and the fruits of your labors
will be plentiful.
Gee! WE GOT A BIG DUMP OF SNOW!

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 15 of 22
Your body needs fuel to run. This process is called
metabolism. Without it you cannot live. You eat an egg
with some toast, but your body cannot use the egg and
toast in that form. So it needs to be transformed into
something that can be transported by your blood stream
to each and every cell in your body. (You can't have an
egg on a piece of toast flowing through your
bloodstream.)
That egg and toast are made up of many "ingredients:
fats, carbohydrates, proteins (macronutrients) plus
antioxidants, minerals etc. (micronutrients). In order
for these to be changed into usable fuel, the pancreas
gets an automatic message to release a hormone called
insulin. The insulin converts this meal into a good
"sugar" and you now have fuel that flows through your
bloodstream to give you energy for your activities,
including all those activities your body does that you
dont know about. Extra sugar (glycogen) that is not
matched with insulin will now be stored in your liver
or in your muscles. (The extra donut and fries.)

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
"Dad!" Darryl Sparks Jr. was angry. "Why did
you do this? Don't you know people will now think
I'm crazy, or at least have parents who are crazy?
Oh! My God. What a mess you put me in. Now what am
I going to do?"
Darryl Sparks Jr., the son of Darryl and
Evelyn Sparks the former owner/editor of the
Pinehill Sound, was a self centered kid, now 22,
who was just completing a business admin course at
Penn State University. He was an ego centered kid
who thought he was a hero because his Dad was the
owner of a newspaper.
Now his Mother and Father had not only sold
the newspaper but had decided to change their life
around completely by making the decision to live
by higher law. They had been working with those
terrible Henrys and this was an embarrassment to
young Darryl. Actually it was more like a severe
psychological shock. It was diametrically opposed
to all the things young Darryl stood for.
"Darryl, Son, slow down a minute and have a
look at reality." Dad Darryl was trying to have
his son see some sense in what he, Dad, had done.
"REALITY?" Young Darryl shouted. "Reality. The
reality I see is you and Mom have gone off your
rockers. I'm getting out of here. I don't have to
take this kind of crap, not even from my parents."
With that Darryl Jr. grabbed his coat and
stormed out the front door, slamming it so hard he
broke the small glass window that was in it. He
didn't stop. He just kept going.
Darryl Jr. was livid with his parents. He had
no idea why they decided to do what they did, but
as far as he was concerned they had just ruined
his life. People would be talking about him behind
his back as being the one with the parents who are
of the devil. They would point and snicker as he
walked by, and in whispers say he was the one
whose parents have gone off the deep end.
He was mortified. He had no idea what he was
going to do. That his very own parents could do
something like this to him was inexcusable as far
as he was concerned.
Darryl's life had been too easy. His parents
had tried to give him everything he ever wanted.
He learned early to hold his hand out and he would
get whatever he wanted. As a result he was always
the kid on the block that had the biggest,
bestest, mostest and latest toys. If there was
anything new Darryl had it. His parents made the
mistake of thinking they did not want their son to
suffer.
As a consequence of that thinking they raised
Darryl to think money grew on trees, that there
were never any rainy days, that life was always
roses. It is a mistake many parents make, much to
their own detriment and to the harm of the
children involved.
So this new condition represented to Darryl
Sparks Jr. a complete departure from the norm. He
was no longer going to get what he wanted, not
from his parents anyway. It meant he would have to
work for his own things, that life on easy street
just came to an end. He would keep his flashy car
but there would not be another unless he earned
it.
He innately knew this would be the end of his
relationship with his girlfriend. Deep within him
he knew that all she was going around with him for
was that he would buy her anything she wanted.
Now, being unable to do so, meant that she would
find someone else who would. And, to make matters
worse, she would talk bad about him and spread the
word about his weird parents.
Darryl's realization of what his parents
decisions had meant to him sank deep and heavy
into his soul. Suddenly the person he was no
longer existed. He would actually have to go to
work to find himself. He wanted to kill his
parents. Well, not kill them, but he wanted to
hurt them for what they have now done to him.
In his present state of mind and philosophy
young Darryl Sparks was not unlike the many years
ago young Frank Wiley. Both men at that age had
things too easy, and both felt the world revolved
around them and money. In Frank Wiley's case he
went on to be a lawyer that charged too much for
what he did and while having a lot of money,
eventually ended up in prison for the attempted
murder of his wife Mae.
Young Darryl wasn't anywhere near that state
yet, but his basic philosophy was similar to that
of the Frank Wiley at that age.
He was in a total state of shock. His heart
was beating a mile a minute, his muscles were hard
and getting sore, from the extreme state of
tension he was in. He didn't know where to go or
what to do. Eventually he ended up in the motel
restaurant where all the kids go. There was no one
there so he chose a booth and sat down.
Ironically, he chose to sit in the exact spot
where Mr. Gladstone sat those many years ago and
started this whole thing off.
