What is a prayer rug?
A prayer rug is used by Muslims of central and western
Asia to cover the ground while they pray. A distinctive
arch-shaped design, the "mihrah," is on one end of the
carpet and must be pointed toward Mecca while the
person is praying.
Why did London once sell "X-ray" proof underwear?
No, it wasn't a fear that Superman was roaming the
streets of London. When the X-ray machine was first
developed in 1895, it (like almost any new technology)
was a bit feared. One of the fears was that the machine
would be used primarily by "peeping Toms" to look
through people's clothes. Thus, London merchants sold
"X-ray" proof underwear to the more anxious segment of
society.

Pavlov's Dogs?
The concept of Pavlov's dogs has been around for a
long, long time.
Pavlov, for those who don't know, was the scientist
that discovered that through pain and reward you could
train animals, in this case dogs, to go to certain
places for food. Once trained they would always go to
the same place.
In other words, he found it took no time at all and
from there on the animals would perform as he wanted,
by going to the same door at his signal. He discovered,
within animals, a feature science calls or knows as
habit structure.
They discovered, in another example of the same
experiment that if you chain to a heavy stake one leg
of a baby elephant it will not be very long before he
realizes he cannot go anywhere and will stop his
efforts. Thereafter you can put the chain hooked to a
pencil in the ground. So long as the elephant feels the
chain he will go nowhere.
Now the interesting thing about all this is that in
spite of all man's pride, education and refusal to
think so, man, too, is an animal. Man has exactly the
same characteristics and will perform exactly the same
as these animals above.
Being a little more sophisticated man learns different
habits but physiologically the processes are the same.
It has also been discovered that man can learn new
habits and quite without thinking his entire life is a
process of doing so. However, most people don't make
conscious choices as to what habits they will establish
and thereby, too often, become victims rather than
players.
Now, I'm not going to tell you that you can become
wealthy, or rich, or any of those other things often
talked about. While it is possible to use this knowledge
to do so, it is far more important you understand.
So, are you one of ...

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 19 of 22
Reproductive Hormones
http://training.seer.cancer.gov/module_anatomy/
unit6_3_endo_glnds5_gonads.html#
The hormones, that are responsible for reproduction,
come from two sets of glands and as a group they are
called the gonads. In the female they are the ovaries
and in the male they are testes. Let's look at them
separately.
Reproductive hormones: Female
The ovaries are located in the "pelvic cavity". That is
the space "below" your abdomen. We think all parts of
our body "below the belt" as being contained in one
large space in our abdomen. In fact, we have several
spaces (cavities) in there and the lowest one is the
pelvic cavity. It holds the uterus, fallopian tubes and
ovaries. The uterus can be described as a thick-walled
hollow vase-shaped structure. The lower end of the
uterus is called the vagina and it ends with the
cervix. The main part of the uterus is a wider
structure. And attached at the top end of both sides is
a long thin tube called the fallopian tube, which ends
with an ovary. This is the source of the hormones:
estrogen and progesterone. If you can imagine looking
directly at the face of a long-horned bull, it would
give you an idea of what I am trying to convey. :)
These steroid hormones contribute to the development
and function of the female reproductive organs and sex
characteristics. They are responsible for several
functions throughout the life of a female. And as with
other hormonal action, the pituitary gland and others
glands will also contribute hormones. The ovaries
secrete two hormones, estrogen and progesterone.
Estrogen is involved in the development of female
sexual features such as breast growth, the accumulation
of body fat around the hips and thighs, and the growth
spurt that occurs during puberty. It also contributes
to the maturing of reproductive organs such as the
uterus and vagina, making them ready for pregnancy. The
other hormones: progesterone causes the uterine lining
to thicken in preparation for pregnancy. Together,
progesterone and estrogens are responsible for the
changes that occur in the uterus during the female
menstrual cycle.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

----------------
Pinehill was like a lot of small towns in
North America. Unlike big cities small towns
tolerated the less fortunate so that the wealthy
and poor lived side by side. Well, not exactly
side by side but certainly in the same town.
In Pinehill there was a chap folks seemed to
know only as "Old Pete". There was a time, of
course when he was a young man and way back then
he fell on hard times. One day when he walked into
a merchants with his hand out, begging, the
merchant refused to help him. Instead he offered
to pay Pete if he shoveled the walks in front of
the store the next time it snowed. Pete agreed and
the merchant gave him enough money to get him
through the week.
That kind of thing happened again and another
merchant, without speaking with the first
merchant, made a similar deal with Pete.
Pete was always right there when it snowed and
fulfilled his promises. Soon, when there was no
snow the merchants had to think of something else
for Pete to do to earn his money. It was the
merchants way of permitting Pete to keep his self
respect, even though he never earned much.
Eventually they had Pete walking up and down
the sidewalks yelling out "Beans are 10¢ a can
today at Brown's Grocery" or "Varsol was only a $1
a gallon today at Smith's Hardware."
It was in this way that "Old Pete" became
known as the town crier.
Over the years Pete couldn't ever afford much.
He stayed in a ramshackle old place the city
permitted to stand only because Pete stayed there.
He rarely saw a bathtub and didn't smell all that
fine, but the folks tolerated and supported him.
In a strange kind of way Pete became a
"symbol" of Pinehill. Folks would come from
Philadelphia for a day just to watch Pete strut up
and down the sidewalks of main street calling out
his messages. Sometimes he would have four or five
different messages going at the same time.
The merchants, without much in the way of a
meeting or collaboration, seemed to have a loose
group that supported Pete in this way. And so the
story goes on for nearly 40 years. Old Pete served
the town this way and in his way he served
himself. He was proud of what he did and when he
was walking the streets calling out his message he
would stick his chest out and really strut.
Darryl Sparks, too, would give Pete stories to
call out. It was here that Pete really got his
name as the "town crier". Darryl would give Pete
tidbits of news he was putting into the paper that
day and Pete would spread the news. Often Darryl
would give Pete a different story every time he
passed by, so Pete's message was always fresh.
Even the city got in on Pete's message service
and anytime there was some event coming up they
would give it to Pete who would again spread the
word.
No one ever queried one another as to how much
they paid Pete. Each thought they weren't giving
him much. But as Pete's reputation grew and
tourists began to speak of him to the merchants
the city eventually began to realize what an asset
Pete was. Each merchant in his or her own way gave
Pete a little more money and Pete showed his
appreciation by including them all in his
messages.
He was always punctual, and he was always
there on the street, regardless of weather. If it
rained he would stop in at Darryl Sparks place to
pick up some cardboard to put over his head until
the rain stopped. If it was cold or snowing Pete
would be out there anyway and he would stop in at
the restaurants lining main street. They would
serve him coffee or a meal without charge. Pete
would then include them in his messages.
Pete never had any friends he was seen with.
He was never in the bars or liquor outlets. It
seems his friends were the merchants whom he saw
every day.
He ended up being a fine example of
consistency. Pete would always be at the same
place at the same time every day. The merchants
got so they depended on him. They could even tell
the time of day by what Pete was doing and where
he was. Pete was persistent and consistent. Many
of the merchants even became attached to the man.
At Christmas time they relied on Pete. Some
gave Pete a white beard and a red Santa hat.
Another gave Pete a bell, really early on.
As a result Pete himself became a news article
and the word spread. All sorts of folks would come
to Pinehill at Christmas time to see Pete.
The bell, Pete decided, was to be used
everyday. So while calling out his messages Pete
would ring his bell. The whole procedure became a
mainstay in town.

HA! HA! HA!
The plant foreman comes to this technician with a
challenge: He wants a way to display important
operational statistics so machine operators can see
them at a glance.
"We threw around a few ideas and finally came up with a
wall-mounted LED sign, similar to those you might find
at airport baggage claims," the tech says. "I shopped
around and found a high-bright, three-color, four-line
model, 6 feet by 1 foot in size. Perfect for the
application, but pricey: $6,000 each."
And because there are three groups of machines, there
will have to be three signs, bringing the total price
to $18,000. But to the tech's surprise, the signs are
approved and installed.
But he is concerned about one thing: The plant's
electric power isn't very clean. So he makes sure three
battery-backed surge protectors are added to the budget
-- cheap insurance for an $18,000 investment.
"Fast-forward a couple of months," says the tech. "The
signs are operating fine. The operators use the data
from the signs to compete with their fellow operators.
Because of the competition, output and the quality of
the output have both improved. Everyone's happy."
Then one day the power goes out. Inside this plant, it
is dark. Really dark. Almost pitch black -- except for
the operators of these machines. They're still happy.
They can find their way to the nearest exit.
Why? Because the I.T. department has provided them with
an $18,000, battery-backed-up operation stats display,
which also happens to serve as an emergency lighting
system!
