What is an "inclined elevator"?

"Inclined elevator" was another term used at the turn
of the twentieth century for what we now call an
escalator. The first one was installed at Harrod's
department store in London and it was scary enough that
store personnel served brandy to customers who felt
faint while riding it.

How old are "prefab" houses?

Pretty old. As far back as the beginning of the
nineteenth century, a prefabricated house was sent to
Hawaii by religious Bostonians wanting to help the
missionaries living in the Pacific island.

A Cacophony of Ring Tones

Published: June 03, 2005 eMarketerDaily

When it comes to ring tones, more and more mobile phone
users are ditching digital renditions of songs, opting
for "master tones" — actual recordings — instead.
JupiterResearch predicts that the US ring tone market
will grow from $417 million in revenues this year to
over $700 million by 2009.

Master tones were introduced in 2004 and brought in $15
million in revenue against $157 million earned from
downloads of polyphonic tones. Monophonic tones were
already declining. Jupiter projects master tone and
voice ringer sales at $156 million for 2005, polyphonic
tones growing to $224 million and monophonic ringers
dropping to $38 million.

According to Jupiter's forecasts, in the US the
installed base of ring tone-capable handsets will be at
82% of wireless subscribers by the end of 2005, and the
market will reach 100% by 2007 — 95% of those phones
are expected to be master tone-capable.

In M:Metrics' monthly Benchmark Survey, 24.58 million
US mobile subscribers, or 13.6% of the market,
downloaded a ring tone in April.

"Although ring tone consumption still skews young —
two-thirds of ring tone downloaders are under 34 — our
data shows subscribers across all age groups are
downloading ring tones to personalize their phone,"
says Mark Donovan, senior analyst at M:Metrics.
"Indeed, the idea of ring tones as a fashion statement
is prompting many to buy multiple ring tones. More than
60% of subscribers who downloaded a ring tone
downloaded two or more, and more than a third
downloaded three or more ring tones in the month of
April."

This heavy consumption among ring tone downloaders is
prompting mobile subscribers to purchase ring tones
from multiple venues. While 61% downloaded their ring
tone from a carrier portal, 49% downloaded tones from
the Web and 5% purchased them via SMS short codes.

The tone trend stretches around the world. In its
fourth annual mobile youth report, the Wireless World
Forum estimates that by 2007 there will be 28 million
Indians under the age of 24 with mobile phones — almost
15 million more than in the UK — and that they will
likely increase their spending on ring tones, ring back
tones and real tones from $2.4 million this year to $23
million by 2007.

The M:Metrics survey found that consumers prefer
musical ring tones to sound effects or voice ring
tones: 93% of respondents said they downloaded a
musical ring tone in April, with 23% downloading the
more expensive master tones.

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 20 of 22

The most common female hormonal change is caused by the
start of menopause. This is not a disease or a negative
condition. This is part of the normal aging process.
(The ovaries, if diseased, can also be removed
surgically: thus menopause will begin immediately). If
the ovaries are no longer present, there is no other
way for the body to produce these hormones. Thus all
the related functions of a pregnancy cannot happen. The
message to get the body ready for pregnancy will not be
sent. Some side effects of the lack or absence of the
estrogen hormone are hot flashes, thinning vaginal
tissue, lack of menstrual periods, mood changes and
bone loss (osteoporosis). One not too uncommon
condition to these hormones is a condition called
polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Reproductive hormones: Male
The male sex gland is the testis. There are two testes
and each is located in the scrotum, which is a small
bulb-like structure outside the lower abdomen. These
glands are the main source of sex hormones called
testosterone but you will recall the pituitary and
other glands (adrenals) also send chemical messengers
to enhance the these activities. In this instance,
working with hormones from the pituitary gland,
testosterone is also involved in the production of
sperm by the testes. The hormones that are secreted are
called androgens. They regulate body changes associated
with sexual development, including enlargement of the
penis, the growth spurt that occurs during puberty, and
the appearance of other male secondary sex
characteristics such as deepening of the voice, growth
of facial and pubic hair, and the increase in muscle
growth and strength.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Old Pete did this work for 40 years without
anyone, including the tax department, knowing how
much money he took in. Pete never spoke of money
to the merchants once it was established he would
be there to sweep or to shovel snow. Somehow they
just gave him some money and Pete would go on.

Then one day Pete passed on. He was not on the
street when he was supposed to be. Three of the
merchants went to Pete's old place and found him
still in bed, having died during the night. The
police and the coroner were called and it was
found Pete died of natural causes. The merchants
thought Pete had no money so they all got
together and gave Old Pete a real fine funeral
and buried him in a respectable place in the town
cemetery.

It was only later, when an appointed executor
was going through Pete's things that they found
Old Pete had accumulated well over $150,000.

They were all shocked and surprised, of
course, but then analysis bore out the truth. Old
Pete never spent any money. He saved it all in his
house. He didn't go anywhere and he didn't buy
much. The money Old Pete received was sometimes
over $200 per day when he added up all the odd
jobs he did. Over the years that accumulated to
that large sum.

The townsfolk didn't know what to do about
that amount of money. Since Old Pete didn't have
any relatives they decided to take the amount of
money that was over $150,000 and spend it on a
grave stone for Old Pete's grave. Then they
decided to take the $150,000 and place it into an
interest bearing bank account.

The merchants and the city fathers agreed to
create a scholarship fund where they would pay out
$2000 to each of ten students each year to aid
their entrance to university. What the interest
from Old Pete's money didn't cover, the merchants
and city fathers would.

Each year they held a $100 per plate social
where these scholarship presentations were made
and it was there that the life of Old Pete was
retold. The profits from the dinner went into the
scholarship fund.

The merchants missed Old Pete. They hired men,
women, students trying to find another Old Pete.
No one saw the value in doing that. No one took
pride in doing that work. It was only Old Pete who
had the wisdom to see what he was doing. Even the
merchants didn't realize the true value of Old
Pete until after he wasn't there.

The towns people reacted to Pete as if he were
a little crazy. They well knew none of them would
do what he did. Some were afraid of Old Pete
because of that. Others, like Darryl Sparks took
an interest in Old Pete and knew him well. In fact
Darryl had kept notes of his dealings with Old
Pete and it was Darryl Sparks' notes that led to
the retelling of Old Pete's life every year at the
Scholarship Dinner.

Each year the merchants would hire a person to
walk up and down the street yelling out the
message about the Scholarship Dinner. Some did the
job better than others but no one did it like Old
Pete.

The merchants got together one day, over
coffee, in one of the restaurants, and they were
talking about Old Pete. They arrived at a mutual
agreement that they should put up a statue of Old
Pete at the end of Main Street, Pete's old walk.

The city fathers agreed and between them all
they came up with what they thought was the right
amount of money. They all knew who they wanted to
carve the statue. That job would fall to David
Wiley, if they could reach him, down there in the
jungle. They all agreed they would contact Sam
Henry to see if he could speak with David.

Old Pete while he didn't keep himself as clean
as he might have, was a symbol to these men and
women, a symbol of consistency, of persistence, of
performing your duty without complaint regardless
of circumstances that tried to impede your
progress. Those were the qualities Old Pete became
known for and those were the qualities stressed at
each Scholarship Dinner.

It could be said that Old Pete took on the
jobs no one else wanted and he did them with
pride. He knew what he was doing and he knew the
value of him strutting up and down Main Street
calling out his messages.

The towns people didn't know until Pete was
gone. How poor it is of people to pay so little
attention to others and only realize the value of
a soul upon their demise.

There is a lesson in there for all who read
this. Pay attention to the people around you,
maybe especially those who are less fortunate than
you. You never know when you will come across an
angel in disguise.
