TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -

How else is Pluto unique among the planets in our solar
system?

What controversy involving Pluto occurred in 1999?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -

What invention has resulted in less sleep times for
humans?

Electric lights! Americans, on average, now sleep 1 1/2
hours less each day than before the dang things came
along. Of course, there are also alarm clocks, the
pill, and television to take away our sleep!

Which is the only planet to have an orbit that crosses
that of another planet?

Pluto, usually the farthest planet from the sun in our
solar system, crosses Neptune's orbit. Pluto is a tiny
planet, smaller than Earth's moon, and its elliptical
orbit takes 248 years and carries it as close as 2.8
billion miles from the sun and as far as 4.6 billion
miles away from the sun. In 1979, Pluto crossed
Neptune's orbit on its way closer to the sun, making
Neptune the farthest planet for most of the 1980s.
Pluto recrossed Neptune's orbit again in 1999 as it
headed away from the sun and once again became the most
distant planet.

Wishing For What You Can't Handle?

Two old friends met one day after many years. One
attended college, and now was very successful. The
other had not attended college and never had much
ambition.

The successful one said, "How has everything been going
with you?"

"Well, one day I opened the Bible at random, and
dropped my finger on a word and it was oil. So, I
invested in oil, and boy, did the oil wells gush. Then
another day I dropped my finger on another word and it
was gold. So, I invested in gold and those mines really
produced. Now, I'm as rich as Rockefeller."

The successful friend was so impressed that he rushed
to his hotel, grabbed a Gideon Bible, flipped it open,
and dropped his finger on a page. He opened his eyes
and his finger rested on the words, "Chapter Eleven."

There may be some who do not know that in the United
States, "Chapter Eleven" is part of the bankruptcy
laws.

Isn't it funny, too, how a man will try anything to get
what he wants? Whether the lazy guy was right or wrong
look how the ambitious guy jumped on it.

There is a saying in India that a man's weak spot is
the thing he wants the most.

It certainly looks like you could tell this first chap
nearly anything you want about riches and he would
follow. Too bad that is a pattern in a lot of people.

You should see what some folks do in the American
southwest when you speak the word "Gold".

I continually wonder what some folks would do if they
did win a lottery. A lot of people keep buying tickets
and hoping for the win but are completely,
unequivocally and entirely unable to handle such a
large amount of money. Most of them have no concept at
all of how much money a million dollars really is or
what happens to ones character when in possession of
such a large amount. They have no idea at all of what
responsibilities there are with such a windfall.

Yet there isn't a one of them who doesn't think they
have complete control of themselves and are capable of
handling money like that. Too bad the record doesn't
bear them out. Indeed the record shows that nearly all
who win lotteries end up in broken marriages,
disfunctional families and all sorts of trouble that
would never have emerged had too much money not come
upon them suddenly.

Yet, too, there is an enormous value in hope, for it
will keep you going where others quit. It will keep you
alive where nothing else will. It will get you through
incredible circumstances where you would not have a
chance without it.

So, it becomes apparent we must decide what we are
going to do with HOPE.

We can follow our greed, with hope and it could lead us
astray. We could follow sound judgement, with hope and
land right where we want to be.

It is the thinking or the reasoning behind the hope
that give hope the power. Like everything else in life
it can be directed to good or to bad. Your choice.

A Few Thoughts To Share On Hormones
And Their Actions
PART 21 of 22

Any change in the production of the hormone, androgen,
will result in fairly obvious changes. A lack of
androgens would result in less masculine
characteristics or behaviour. And increase of androgens
would enhance these characteristics. It is relatively
easy to understand that the undesirable "steroid"
notoriety is based on people taking these products to
enhance their masculinity. But this practice seems to
be done because the person feels inadequate abut their
appearance or strength. Thus they have to support their
negative self image by taking synthetic male hormones
(steroids).

What is a little harder to understand is the lack of
fear about the side effects of this practice. Here are
some possible side effects in using synthetic steroids.
They include changes in appearance (acne or increased
facial hair), development of a round or moon-shaped
face, thin, fragile skin that bruises easily, or
changes of body fat to the trunk. You might also
experience mood changes, personality changes,
irritability, agitation, or depression. Other possible
side effects include increased appetite and weight
gain, poor wound healing, headache, glaucoma, irregular
menstrual periods in women, peptic ulcer, muscle
weakness, osteoporosis, steroid-induced diabetes, and
osteonecrosis (damage to the hip joint that leads to
severe arthritis). This is obviously a very serous
undertaking and should not be done without a lot of
medical support and recommendations.

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

Darryl Sparks was musing over this story in
his mind as he was thinking about his son. How
spoiled his son was. How arrogantly proud and
ignorant his son was compared to the real person
of Old Pete.

Today the town has changed. Old Pete is just a
memory that is fading with the passing of each
person who knew him. The upcoming generations will
have no real understanding of who Old Pete
Townsend really was. They will only remember him
as a name because of the annual Dinner and because
of the statue they would place on Main Street.

Today it seemed that the values Old Pete stood
for are no longer taught. All appear to want
instant gratification in what they are doing and
feel the world owes them a living. That kind of
thinking will come back to haunt those who
practice it, but it certainly appears to be more
common today.

As it happened, David Wiley and his wife Pam
and the two kids were in Pinehill visiting Pam's
folks, the Hunters.

When the city fathers approached Sam Henry to
get in touch with David he merely invited them to
give David a call over at the Hunter's where he
was staying. That is what they did.

"Certainly I'll do that. I knew Old Pete and I
liked him. Have you any photographs?"

"Yes, Mr. Wiley, we have several actually.
Most of them were taken by Darryl Sparks. We'll
get them from Darryl."

"Never mind, I'll get them from Darryl myself.
Is there any time limit on getting the job done?"

"Not really. We are only now preparing the
location and the base upon which to put the
statue."

"Please, only prepare the foundation pad,
rising no more than six inches above the ground. I
will create the pedestal along with the statue.
What height were you thinking the entire edifice
should be?"

"We were thinking something no higher than ten
feet."

"Good, and did you have any particular
material in mind?"

"Again, it would have to withstand all kinds
of weather for years and years. We were thinking
of some kind of metal that would last forever."

"That would be fine. I will have it for you
within two weeks."

"Oh!" the voice was shocked at the other end
of the phone line. "That would be wonderful Mr.
Wiley. Are you sure you can do it properly in that
time?"

"You will have an exact replica of Old Pete.
It will be as lifelike as if he were still alive."

"That would be terrific. Now that I think
about it, if we hurry up we can have the unveiling
when we hold our next Scholarship Dinner. That
would be terrific." The voice was becoming excited
now.

"How much will you want for the job, Mr.
Wiley?"

"I will require no money and no accolades or
honors. I require only that you honor a man that
has served this community in ways most citizens
are too proud and arrogant to serve. Old Pete was
a fine and humble man who served you in ways you
will never know."

"Yes, Mr. Wiley. We are only now beginning to
find that out. You are very generous Sir and the
city sincerely appreciates your work."

"Thank you. If you send a truck with some kind
of lifting capacity over to the rear of the
Hunter's garage at eight in the morning exactly
two weeks from today, I will be there to deliver
the statue."

"That's excellent Mr. Wiley. Thank you."

David knew there would be much consternation
within the decision makers at city hall. The very
idea that he would have the statue ready in that
time would seem preposterous. They would not
believe it, and would all be fighting about it..

David immediately, mentally, communicated with
Darryl Sparks. "Darryl, I have agreed to do a
statue of Old Pete for the city. Can you and I get
together today so I can get some photographs?"

Within seconds he had his reply. "Yes, meet me
at the restaurant in the Pinehill Motel at ten."

David was there at precisely ten as was
Darryl. "Hello, David. It is good to see you. How
is the family?"

"Fine, Darryl. It is good to see you too. How
is your family?"

"They're fine David. Here are the pictures you
wanted."

They went into the restaurant and sat down
near a window. They each ordered a coffee.

"I advised the city the statue would be ready
within two weeks. They are somewhat flabbergasted
and I think they don't believe it'll be done by
then."

It was parent's day at the local university and the
Dean was showing a group of parents the great things
about the campus. While walking by the Science
building a student walked out dressed entirely in
black, wearing a mask and brandishing a sword. When one
of the parents inquired if such a student could be
considered a distraction to the others, the Dean
replied "Well yes. But you see we have a Zorro
