TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

What is the largest cockroach on the record books?

Can roaches fly?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Why do we call the hottest days of summer the "dog
days" of summer?

It's not because we're panting like dogs on those days.
The phrase dates back to ancient times when astronomers
noted that the hottest period extended from about 20
days before to 20 days after the conjunction of Sirius
(the "dog star") and our sun. That's from about July 4
to August 11.

How are cockroaches able to sense you when you're about
to hit them?

Most people who have lived in the city know what it's
like to take a whack at a cockroach, only to have the
little monster avoid certain death by scooting away
untouched. Researchers now believe they know how
they're able to do that. Scientists at NEC Research
Institute say roaches are equipped with an organ that
allows them to sense the smallest changes in wind speed
and velocity. The organ is covered with hairs, called
cerci, that allow roaches to sense that danger is
coming -- and from which direction -- so they can beat
it to safety. Hanan Davidowitz -- the physicist who
served as lead author of the study -- said researchers
discovered the organ by trapping roaches in wax,
attaching electrodes to their neurons and putting them
in a wind tunnel. They noted that, even with wind
blowing around them, roaches can still detect
particular gusts created by an approaching animal.

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!

The original name that was chosen for Cameron Crowe's
movie "Almost Famous" was "Untitled." The name had to be
changed because Dreamworks would not allow it to be called
this.

OPTIMIZE LIFE NOW!™
with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler
---------------------

Go Big Or Go Home!

"Make no little plans, they have no magic to stir your
blood... MAKE BIG PLANS. Aim high in hope and work.…"
So wrote Daniel H. Burnham in the last century. The big
plans are important. They capture your vision. The next
step is to break them down into "do-able" chunks,
chunks that can be done in even one day. That is what
gives you a definite sense of accomplishment, isn't it?
The big plans are necessary, the baby steps,
imperative!

My daughter shared a marketing tip with me the other
day. She said, "Go big, or go home". I thought about
this quite a bit as it seemed so brash and arrogant.
Great slogan, but what about the little guy? Then, it
all made sense. Each person has the opportunity to
define ‘big’ for herself. If we are to live our dreams
and visions about how we want our lives to be, how we
want to be remembered, what our contribution to our
daily world could be, it IS true. Go big or go home!

Have a vision. Have a master plan for your whole life
as you presently see it. What would you like to be
doing, experiencing, being or having in your life,
sometime in your life? What are the things that are
most important, significant and valuable to you? That's
big!

After you have created the "big picture" then you can
decide what you would like to create immediately and
pay attention to that. Timing is only one difference
between short and long term goals. Another important
difference is that short term goals lead directly to
long term goals which fit perfectly into the master
plan. And the good news is....you are in charge! You
can change your master plan, and your approach to it,
as your interests and priorities shift and grow. You
are not locked in. A master plan is a plan for joy and
passion, not a plan for duty and obligation.

It is useful to break your goals down into three
categories: current, near future and far future. Once
you have put your future goals into your subconscious
mind, they are begun. It is not only action that is
required. Keeping your goals in the forefront of your
mind is key. Thoughtfully craft your current goals.
Know how you will measure your success and plan for it.

Think big! Think limitlessly. Think "out of the box".
People are often limited by their minds unwillingness
to stretch. Remember what Napoleon Hill said: "...if
you can conceive it, and believe it, you can achieve
it!"

If you find yourself surrounded by people who are
‘thinking little’ it might be difficult to find support
and acceptance for your big plans. You may have to
include some new associates who want to play ‘big’,
too! You have probably heard that, if you want to run
with the big dogs, you have to get off the porch! Jump
off that porch and get running!

Reflect on the biggest view of your life--your master
plan. Is it big enough for you? Does it cause you to
stretch to get your arms around it? If not, think a
little bigger and see where it takes you. If it does,
be sure you have planned the route that will get you
there. Then, follow it. As you embark on each task
today, ask yourself, "Am I on the road to my vision by
doing this?" If not, make a correction.

Go big or go home! That one little phrase keeps me on
my toes.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson

Stop The World: I Want To Get Organized!
PART 2 OF 5

You may already be asking yourself how does this fit
into a nursing/health column, but stay with me. It is
absolutely crucial to your health mentally, emotionally,
and financially.

I want to offer an analogy to this "choosing to be
organized" process. Picture two farmers. They are faced
with having to drain a flooded field. Their destination
is another field, 500 yards away. The land between
the two sites is hilly, but eventually a little downward
from the original land. (Engineers, bear with me.)

The first farmer looks at the field to be drained and
knows it's going to be a long, tough job. He gets his
farm hands to start digging, following the contour of
the land, moving rocks, being held up by traffic, having
some back problems amongst this workers, etc. Finally,
many days later, although the cost was higher than
anticipated, financially and emotionally, the field is
draining nicely. Unfortunately, he knows it will have
to be done again, as it's not possible to drain it
permanently.

Now picture the other farmer, who is presented with
this same problem. He spends some time thinking
about the problem, makes a few phone calls, books
some earthmoving equipment, and makes arrangements
with the local government to halt the traffic for a short
time. Once all the plans are underway, the ditch dug
very quickly. As well, this ditch is permanent, and deep
enough so he will never have another flooding problem.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

How many times does that happen? One doesn't
trust another because that other has promised
something the first doesn't think can happen. It
all comes from the experience of the first. It
provides no allowance for new technology, new
methods, new ways, new materials or new ideas.

The same thing happens when you live close
enough to a person you think you know them. As a
result you don't give them the benefit of the
doubt when they begin to say or show you knowledge
they have picked up. It is said a profit is not
recognized in his own town, and that is exactly
what was happening to David. It also will happen
to most thinkers in their lifetime. One must go
further afield to be believed.

David excused himself from supper early. He
wanted to get into the garage and get to work. He
knew exactly what he wanted plus had sought and
received Bob Hunter's permission to use the
garage. Bob had moved out the two family cars and
parked them out front of the house. He knew David
would only be taking two weeks and Bob felt it was
a small thing he was doing for David.

David also extracted a promise from all in the
house that they would not come out to see what he
was doing. He wanted them to see the work in the
same way as everyone else in town.

So, in the garage David cleared away any
debris that was laying around, waved his hand from
side to side in front of him sending energy out
and saw the floor clean as was possible.

From there he saw, in his imagination the
material from which he wanted to make the statue
and there it was, on the floor of the garage. Two
huge blocks of a bronze like metal. One would
serve as the base and the other would serve as the
statue.

David could have manifested each into finished
form had he wanted, but he knew he would miss too
many details that way. He really wanted to savor
his work and to fuss over every detail such as to
make the statue of Old Pete so lifelike the people
would be amazed.

He knew that when he was finished he was going
to have a product unlike any other and it was his
intent to imbue the statue with certain properties
to keep it perfect and draw attention forever.

First, he decided to work on the base. Once
that was done he would cause his "inscription" to
be placed in all sides. The base was not going to
be square. While it was eight feet by eight feet
at the bottom, it was going to be six feet by six
feet on top. It was going to be eight feet tall,
with super shiny smooth sides. He didn't want it
to be too short so kids could climb on it and get
hurt. Oh! that reminded him, that was one more
quality he wanted to instill into the statue.

On the bottom he saw the block cut back about
four inches from each side such that the square on
the very bottom was eight feet by eight feet and
was three inches thick. At the three inch point
the block shrunk to be four inches back from the
outside edge. Then he saw it taper slowly and
smoothly up eight feet so that at the top the
block was six feet by six feet. All corners were
rounded, offering no grip.

The mass was enormously heavy so David saw the
block as being hollow, leaving a shell that was
three inches thick on all sides. That was far more
than necessary to support the statue under all
circumstances.

Now was the time he wanted to apply the
surface to the base. He wanted that to be so
smooth and shiny it could be used as a mirror.

He took the time to "see" the surfaces as
finely machined as man could do, then he applied
his spiritual knowledge to the finishing. When he
was done the surfaces looked almost exactly as one
of those mirrors one sees in a shoe store, low
enough to see the shoes you are trying on. The
surface of the base was completely mirror finished
on every outer exposed part. Even the very base
where it would be attached to the concrete base
was mirror finished. David stood back. He was
pleased. Now he caused four holes to appear, one
in each corner of the base. Each hole was one and
one quarter inches wide.

Next, David wanted to create the inscription
into the base. He thought about what he wanted,
long and hard. Then he thought deeply on how he
wanted it to appear. What he wanted was an
inscription that would read right, from almost any
side to side angle. He wanted it to be beneath the
surface so as to have the surface remain mirror
finish smooth, but yet allow anyone looking at the
inscription to see what it said. He wanted this to
be almost hologram like but without the severe
angle restrictions. As he thought about it the
image of the inscription began to form into the
bronze, beneath the surface yet show up as clear
as if it were three dimensional.

David stood back. He looked at the
inscription. He read it. He moved about the garage
and looked at it from every possible angle. He was
satisfied he had what he wanted. Now he caused the
same inscription to be on all four sides.

The base was complete.

HA! HA! HA!

MY HUSBAND,Robert, and I were watching television the
last Saturday evening in April. When he went to bed, I
stayed up to see the end of a program. Before retiring,
I turned the clocks ahead for daylight-saving time.
The next morning, the alarm wakened us for early
church. When we arrived, it was still dark, and no one
was there.

"I can't imagine what's wrong," I said. "I
turned the clocks ahead."

"So did I," Robert quietly replied.
