What is a "bluenose"?
According to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, a
"bluenose" is a person who advocates a rigorous moral
code. I can only speculate about a possible connection
to "blue laws" - rigorous laws designed to regulate
morals and conduct in colonial New England (also -
statutes regulating work, commerce, and amusement on
Sundays.)
What causes a lion to attack a human?
What causes a lion to become a man-eater? Would you
believe, a toothache? That's according to Bruce
Patterson, a zoologist at the Field Museum of Chicago,
who notes that other chronic injuries or infirmities
also can cause lions to seek people for a meal.
Patterson and Waukegan, Ill. dentist Ellis Neiburger
say lions and other habitual man-eaters, such as tigers
and leopards, only turn to people as a food source when
they suffer an injury that keeps them from pursuing
their favorite fast-moving prey such as zebras and
gazelles. "Humans are easy prey," Patterson said.
"We're very slow, we don't hear very well and we don't
see very well in the dark."

Tips And Tidbits
Moms and E-Mail
Published: June 15, 2005
More and more mothers are shopping online to save time
and money, so marketers are anxious to capture their
attention via e-mail with offers and promotions.
"Effective Tactics for Email Marketing to Moms," a new
study from Lucid Marketing and EmailLabs, has some good
news and bad news for those marketers.
The good news is that e-mail promotions to moms work.
Moms place a high value on discounts and coupons, with
86% saying that savings is the reason why they
subscribe to retailing newsletters and promotions.
In addition, 62% of moms are likely to click through
e-mails that include product pricing.
"With 75 million moms in the United States influencing
80% of consumer household purchasing decisions, it's
critical that retailers understand how to gain their
trust and deliver value through the e-mail marketing
channel," said Kevin Burke, president of Lucid
Marketing.
Now the bad news. Getting to mom's inner circle of
e-mails isn't easy.
The survey results suggest that moms are selective when
it comes to e-mail marketing, with 69% subscribing to
only one to five retail e-mail promotions/newsletters.
Some 39% of the respondents said they are "not likely"
to opt-in to e-mail promotions when visiting a retail
site for the first time. Over half were hesitant in
their response.
"Retailers have to do a better job conveying the value
of their e-mail promotions or they will likely never
get moms to subscribe let alone click and purchase,"
said Mr. Burke.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
by Karin Henderson
Let's Explore Some Body Parts: The Heart
Treat this part of your body as your best friend - or
something crucial to everything you hold dear.
What is it?
It's a huge muscle! It's a "central pump". That's all
it is, but this mass has your life under its control. It
also has two sets of blood vessels. One that supplies
it's own mass (coronary) and one set that circulates
the blood throughout your body.
Where is it?
The heart is located in your upper chest, a little off
to the left of your sternum, just outside of the lung
lining. Your lungs (2) are made up of lobes, and
in order to leave room for the heart, the left side
has only two lobes, but the right side has three.
What does it do?
It pumps blood throughout the body. 24/7/365,
without any instructions from you! It has four "hollow"
spaces (chambers) as two sets, which fill with
blood. Once these spaces are filled, they close
one set of "doors" and open another set and send
the blood to either the rest of the body or to the
lungs. This is what gives you the "lub dub" sounds.
Blood going to the body already has oxygen in it.
Blood going to the lungs is going to pick up oxygen.
You need oxygen to live.
What one thing can you can do today to keep
your heart healthy?
First, go for a walk today. Then, are you ready to
make some lifestyle changes? Many people have
done this in conjunction with top quality nutritional
supplements that provide optimum, not minimum,
nutrients. It is very rewarding to see people who
were totally debilitated, regain their lives with only
a little determination and education.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------
They stopped at the site. To David's surprise
the city workmen had already poured a reinforced
foundation that was 12 feet by 12 feet. It was
four feet thick and had been poured three days
earlier. The crew was now back filling the
foundation, having just finished removing the
forms they used to form the concrete. The
foundation was exactly as David had specified. The
bolts to hold the statue were sticking out of the
top of the concrete.
The men were now filling in the sides and
leveling the work site.
"We sure had to do this fast. The boss says
you are going to have the statue ready for us next
week. Is that right Mr. Wiley?"
"Yes. It is nearly ready now. You men have
done a fine job here. It is exactly as I thought
it would be. Thank you. The statue will fit
perfectly."
"We want to bring in sod and some flowers to
do a little landscaping around. We can reach the
foundation from the front street, with a crane,
for placing it."
"I would recommend you leave the front so the
trucks can get as close as possible. Once the
statue is up you can shroud it with canvas so it
won't be seen, until you pour a sidewalk up the
front to meet the city sidewalk. You can then
finish any landscaping. When does the city want to
unveil it?"
"I'm not sure Mr. Wiley. You will have to
speak with city fathers about that. The annual
banquet is usually the last week of August, about
three weeks away. I think they have something
planned for that."
"Good. I'll ask the fellas downtown. Keep up
the good work. When will you be ready to pick up
the statue?"
"Anytime after tomorrow is fine with us. I
imagine the boss will call you to set up a date."
"The time I set earlier was for eight in the
morning, next Wednesday. We might as well keep
that date. You tell your boss all will be ready at
the Hunter's for that morning."
"I will Mr. Wiley. Thank you. I'll bet that
statue is a 'beaut'. The one you did for the
Memorial is a terrific statue. I can just imagine
what this one looks like."
"I hope you will like it. I think the towns
folk will approve. I'll see you next Wednesday
morning then."
"You bet. Have a good day Mr. Wiley."
With that the trio left for home. On the way
the saw Darryl Sparks and Sam Henry on the
sidewalk chatting. They pulled over and David
wound down the window in the car. "Hey you two. We
thought we might buy you guys a coffee over at the
motel restaurant. You on?"
"Hi David. Sure. We're just waiting for Ben
Striker. We'll be over when he gets here."
"Good. See you there."
With that Bob Hunter drove to the restaurant.
As they walked in, to Bob's surprise, there were
Ben, Sam and Darryl already seated in a booth.
"What kept you guys?" Darryl asked with a
sparkle in his eye.
"Hello, Ben. Good to see you." David held out
his hand and Ben Striker took it, shaking it.
"Hello Maz. How are you? How do like where we
live?"
"Hi Mr. Sam. I like it but I want to live back
home in my village. Things are too complicated
here. Man has too many toys and too little time to
live like we do. I think it is healthier where we
live."
"Ha ha! I think so too Maz. I don't think you
have anything to worry about. I don't think your
Mom and Dad are going to move back. Maybe you can
talk Grandma and Grandpa Hunter to come down and
visit you more often. Would you like that?"
"You bet, Mr. Sam. That would be fun, but I
don't know if they would like that."
The pair of them had been speaking as if Bob
Hunter was not there. He reached over and gave Maz
a little flick of his hair. "See here young man I
will spend as much time as you want with you at
your home. All I need to do is get your Mom and
Dad to help us get down there. How's that?"
"Would you Gramps? That would be neat." The
idea that his Grandma and Grandpa wanted to share
in his life in the village was a thrill to Maz. He
looked at his Father. The two communicated without
words, as they often did.
"Sure Maz", said David, "Grandma and Grandpa
can come down anytime they want. With Grandpa
being retired that should be somewhat easier I
think."
Bob Hunter was becoming more accustomed to
being around those who lived by higher law. The
intensity of love that was broadcast from this
table was close to being overwhelming and it would
have been had Bob not been preconditioned by
having his daughter and son-in-law staying in his
home.

HA! HA! HA!
The Jewish Chronicle had heard that Benny was coming up
to his 110th birthday so they sent one of their
reporters to interview him.
"How do you account for your longevity?" asked the
reporter.
"You could say that I am a health nut," Benny answered.
"I have never smoked or drunk alcohol, I am always in
bed by ten o'clock, I've been going to Israeli folk
dance classes since I was a teenager and I've always
walked three miles a day, even in rain or snow."
"But," said the reporter, "my uncle Saul followed
exactly the same routine and he died when he was 75. So
how come it didn't work for him?"
"All I can say," replied Benny "is that he didn't keep
it up long enough."
