What bird may build a nest weighing up to two tons?

The bald eagle. Eagles build nests to last. The same
birds may return to the same nest for decades, adding
sticks to the nest each year (that's right: these birds
love to renovate). The nests may be as big as nine feet
across and 12 feet deep (that would make a nice bedroom
for YOU!) and weigh up to two tons.

Do fathers-to-be experience hormone changes during
their wife's pregnancy?

Amazingly, they do. Have some pickles and ice cream,
Dad. Canadian researchers say just as a woman's hormone
levels change during her pregnancy, so do the male
hormone levels of her mate. According to lead
researcher Katherine E. Wynne-Edwards of Queen's
University in Kingston, Ontario, average testosterone
levels were significantly lower in 13 expectant fathers
compared to 14 guys who had no children. Testosterone
levels began to rise in the new dads soon after their
wives gave birth, she said, but remained lower than in
guys who did not have children. More soon-to-be dads
had detectable amounts of estrogen, the female sex
hormone, in their saliva than did men whose partners
were not expecting. Estrogen levels rose after the
birth of their child, Wynne-Edwards said.

eMarketer: Broadband Transforms Web Usage
by Wendy Davis,

BROADBAND USERS "INTEGRATE THE INTERNET into their
daily lives" in a way that has changed "how they
communicate, socialize, shop, and access
entertainment," according to a report released Tuesday
by research company eMarketer. "Speed is changing
everything," states the report, dubbed "Broadband
Demographics & Usage." "Broadband users don't just do
more of what dial-up users do--an always on, high-speed
Internet connection fundamentally changes their
behavior, online and off," states the report.

eMarketer also estimated that 49.5 million U.S.
broadband users ages 14 and older (which comes out to
66 percent of all broadband users) made an online
purchase last year, and projected that, in 2008, 98.8
million broadband users over age 13 (or 72 percent of
broadband users in that year) will do so.

eMarketer's finding that broadband is transformative is
similar to the conclusion reached by Yahoo! in its
April report, "It's a Broadband Life." Yahoo! found
that high-speed Internet access changed the nature of
users' online activities. Beth-Ann Eason, vice
president-category development at Yahoo!, said at the
time, "Broadband really transformed users' experiences
.... When you have broadband, you're more likely to
pursue a greater depth of knowledge around a particular
topic."

The Yahoo! report concluded that broadband users are
more likely to download videos, share photos, publish
Web pages, and participate in online dating, among
other activities, than are dial-up users.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Your Heart And Your Courage:
Both Belong To You
Both Must Be Nurtured And Respected
PART 4 of 11

You will have noticed that the heart relaxes and
contracts rhythmically. What you may not have
understood in my word picture is that both atriums
(atria: more than one) relax and both ventricles
contract…at the same time. So in one contraction, one
batch of blood is sent to the lungs to pick up oxygen
and another batch is sent to the body with fresh
oxygen. This is called a cardiac cycle (one moment of
relaxation and one moment of contraction). That is what
you feel when you “take your pulse”. (You may have
noticed you didn’t take any nutrients onboard. They
come through the gastro-intestinal (GI) tract).

Now that you are carrying this life-sustaining oxygen,
you need to deliver it to cells. And this is done as
you pass through the body systems: its smaller arteries
(arterioles) and eventually into the capillaries.
Oxygen, nutrients, and other elements are dropped off
to each cell. (Nutrients were picked up as sugar when
the gastro-intestinal tract activities interacted with
the blood.) As we go to the “end of the line” to each
individual cell (cellular), we now pick up blood
without a lot of oxygen, any waste products, and any
unwanted or infectious elements. Then we begin the
return journey through the veins of the Inferior or
Superior Vena Cava. And back to the heart the same way.
Incidentally, if you have blood sugar tests done, you
can now understand how and what amount of sugar reaches
the cell and why the nurse will ask how long it has
been since your last meal. And if they make a comment
about how light or dark your blood appears, you can
understand what they mean. They will know the “normal
values” for each of these tests.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places.

The Saga Of Pinehill, The Adventure
is now in bookstores. A controversial and powerful story.

As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .
----------------

It was nice to be back home again. The kids
immediately were back into the usual routine. Play
was the order of the day.

David and Pam were relieved too. It was good
to be back where things were settled and the daily
order of events was a known one.

"I think it is time we began to work earnestly
with the kids on higher law. They are maturing
quickly and we want them to consider well and
always the consequences of their actions."

"I think you're right, Pam. I'll start right
away teaching them to expect results. If you do
the same then it won't be long and they will have
it down pat. I see Boolanga is working with his
kids too, as are Missy and Mazunta. I agree. It's
time."

The time passed quickly. Before they knew it
David and Pam were back in Pinehill for the
unveiling ceremony.

The city had set up a platform on which sat
the Mayor, the Aldermen, along with David and Pam.
David had not been asked to make a speech, but he
was to be there as the man who created the statue.

There was already a buzz around town. Word got
around that the statue shone at nights and
everyone in town had come out to see it at least
one night.

None had yet seen the inscription. David had
not caused it to appear yet, having blinded
onlookers. Now was the time it was to be made
visible and David had caused that to happen
without anyone knowing about it.

The Master of Ceremonies had gone on about the
legacy of Old Pete. He had spoken of this night
being the annual Scholarship Dinner in memory of
Old Pete and that it was entirely fitting this
statue was made available in time for this night.
He also brought out the idea this was indeed a
special ceremony because they had the artist with
them this day, and he asked David to stand. He
mentioned David had done this work and had not
charged the city for the work, but rather donated
it.

A cheer went up for David. He rose,
acknowledged their appreciation and sat.

The next speaker was the Mayor. "Ladies and
gentlemen. Welcome. I attend many functions as
your Mayor, but at none have I witnessed such a
crowd from the City of Pinehill. It is indeed a
joy to unveil this statue of a man who for years
was such an important part of the landscape here
in Pinehill. We who knew Pete, miss him today.
When Old Pete was with us we looked upon him as a
bit of a beggar. Today, after he is gone, we now
realize how important he was to our community. It
is sad to think that our worth is not appreciated
until after we are gone and it is sad that is true
of Old Pete. That is why we set up the Scholarship
Fund with Pete's assets. It is true he continues
to give to this community and to this city. Today,
with the help of one of our own Pinehill citizens,
we unveil this statue of Old Pete, that it might
serve as a reminder to all of us of the qualities
we see in Pete.

So, let's get at the job."

The Mayor walked down the steps and over to a
blue ribbon stretched across the canvas that
shrouded Pete. He would cut that ribbon and a
crane operator would then lift the specially
prepared shroud up over the top of Pete and then
move the shroud away.

Stepping up to the blue ribbon, the Mayor was
handed a pair of scissors. Turning to look at the
crowd he spoke. "By these ceremonies this statue
is now dedicated to the memory of Old Pete. May it
serve our town forever." He then turned and
without further words cut the blue ribbon.

Immediately the crane operator began to lift
the shroud. Slowly it rose to reveal "Old Pete".

The crowd murmured. They were in awe of the
statue. It was so life like they couldn't believe
it. Old Pete sparkled in the setting sun. It was
as if Pete were there. Everyone there could hear
his bell again, could see him walking up the
street calling out his messages.

Even the Mayor was in awe. "This statue is
magnificent." Those were the only words that could
come out of the man who had a reputation for
talking. Then he walked up to read the
inscription.

"Old Pete served this city faithfully in bad
weather and good. He displayed qualities of
faithfullness, loyalty, persistence, integrity and
devotion to duty. In this statue is embodied all
those qualities and they will be spread unto all
who touch the base. Old Pete continues to serve
Pinehill even long after his death. Strive to be
like him because you are from Pinehill, the city
of 'Old Pete'."

Because I was processing my first accident report at
the transport company where I worked, I was being
particularly attentive.

The driver had hit a deer on the highway, and the
result was a severely damaged hood and fender. My
serious mood was broken, however, when I reached the
section of the report that asked, "Speed of other
vehicle?"

The driver had put, "Full gallop."
