Why do we call a farewell appearance or final act a "swan
song"?
According to ancient legend, right before death the normally
silent swan sings a beautifully sweet song.
What is the origin of the phrase "no room to swing a cat"?
Fortunately, it's not really a cat we're talking about. The
phrase can be traced back to a time when sailors were
punished with flogging, with a cat o' nine tails. The entire
ship's company would be required to witness the punishment,
and sometimes there would be no room to swing the cat o'
nine tails.

Companies Read Employee E-mail
SAN FRANCISCO -- Big Brother is not only watching but he is
also reading your e-mail.
According to a new study, about a third of big companies in
the United States and Britain hire employees to read and
analyze outbound e-mail as they seek to guard against legal,
financial or regulatory risk.
More than a third of U.S. companies surveyed also said their
business was hurt by the exposure of sensitive or
embarrassing information in the past 12 months, according to
the annual study from a company specializing in protecting
corporate e-mail at large businesses.
"What folks are concerned about is confidential or sensitive
information that is going out," said Gary Steele, chief
executive of Cupertino, California, company Proofpoint,
which conducted the study along with Forrester Research.
The top concern was protecting the financial privacy and
identity of customers followed by compliance issues and a
bid to prevent confidential leaks. Businesses ranked
monitoring for inappropriate content and attachments as less
important.
Steele also said on Friday that more and more companies are
employing staff to read outgoing e-mails of workers who
typically have no idea their correspondence is being
monitored.
"It is not something that is broadcast," Steele said. "There
are organizations where employees think they can say
whatever they want to say and nobody is going to read it."
The survey gathered responses concerning e-mail security
from 406 companies in the United States and the United
Kingdom with more than 1,000 employees.
In both regions, 38 percent of respondents said they
employed staff to read or otherwise analyze outbound e-mail.
In the United States, 44 percent of companies with more than
20,000 employees said they hire workers to snoop on workers'
e-mail.
Nearly one in three U.S. companies also said they had fired
an employee for violating e-mail policies in the past 12
months and estimated that about 20 percent of outgoing
e-mails contain content that poses a legal, financial or
regulatory risk.

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 9 of 11
How do hospitals reduce bioburden? Who does the actual
work of keeping all this under control? Hospitals dont
take chances with their cleaning routines. Many have
several specialized areas, staffed by technicians who
have a lot of infection control knowledge. They are
trained to recognize infectious materials and handle
them appropriately to reduce the bioburden. Years ago,
all areas cleaned their own equipment. Now because of
the risk of spreading harmful micro-organisms,
centralized cleaning is the recognized practice. Not
only is cleaning a must, but as the strength of these
micro-organisms are so strong, that they must also be
disinfected and often sterilized. Soap and water may be
fine in a home environment, but in a hospital,
predetermined cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization
practices are monitored very carefully.
One part of the infection cycle I havent mentioned
yet is the host: you. If you are not too healthy or
your immune system is not in good shape, you are much
more susceptible to being a welcome host to these
micro-organisms/ pathogens. Your healthy plays a
major role in keeping your resistance strong. So what
might be a huge bioburden or load of pathogens to
someone who is very weak and disease-ridden, may not be
a problem to someone who is generally healthy.
In our homes, we often share food and other personal
care utensils. If you suspect someone has a cold or
other type of infection, sharing is not a good thing.
No one worries too much about microbes that are
harmless. But as they are invisible, who knows what
lurks. In fact, it might be a practice you should
consider eliminating altogether. In a hospital setting
everyone considers any object contaminated. Sharing
one persons food or utensils with another person is
never allowed. One of the threats to our health is all
the strange (to us) viruses and bacterial infections,
such as the avian flu. But if you keep your immune
system strong and your resistance high, you should be
fine.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

Man, read my mail? Things must be getting really bad when so
many corporations feel the need to read outgoing email.
Think on the ramifications of that for a minute. That means
there are a large number of employees that simply are not
trusted - either because they steal company secrets or
because they do not know they are leaking private
information.
If this distrust lasts for very many years it will help put
man on a downward spiral. Lack of trust does not breed good
conditions. Think on that for a while.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Wampum: Where did "wampum" get its name?
"Wampum" is an Algonquian Indian word, meaning "white
string". There were two types of Indian bead money - white
and black (or purple). the "white" was the more valuable.

The Dog's Duties
A nursery school teacher was delivering a station wagon full
of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting
in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The
children fell to discussing the dog's duties.
"They use him to keep crowds back," said one youngster.
"No," said another, "he's just for good luck."
A third child brought the argument to a close. "They use the
dogs," she said firmly, "to find the fire hydrant."
