What is a "dark horse"?
According to Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, a
"dark horse" can be one of three things: a little-known
contender (such as a racehorse) that makes an unexpectedly
good showing; an entrant in a contest that is judged
unlikely to succeed; or a political candidate unexpectedly
nominated, usually as a compromise between factions.
Why is root beer called "beer"?
Root beer was called "beer" in order to make it appeal to
alcohol drinkers. In the early 1870s, prohibitionist Charles
Hires decided to market a root and herb tea as a soft drink.
He was hoping alcohol drinkers would abandon their brew for
his root tea. But a friend convinced him that calling it
"Hires Herb Tea" would ensure that no self-respecting
alcohol-lover was going to drink it. He suggested "Root
Beer" instead.

My How We Busy Ourselves
With Unimportant Things!
Do you know what would have happened if it had been three
Wise Women instead of three Wise Men? They would have asked
directions, arrived on time, helped deliver the baby,
cleaned the stable, made a casserole, and brought practical
gifts.
Yeah, and do you know what they said when they left? "Did
you see the sandals Mary was wearing with that gown?" "That
baby doesn't look anything like Joseph!" "Can you believe
that they let all of those disgusting animals in the house?"
"I heard that Joseph isn't even working right now!" "And
that donkey that they are riding has seen better days too!"
"Want to bet on how long it will take until you get your
casserole dish back?"
This is just a joke and the biblical story is just a story.
Again, though, it points out a human trait that cripples
many.
We get ourselves involved in talking this way about others.
It is a judgment talk and ultimately has the power to cut
the legs out from underneath us. We have no business
interfering with or trying to tell others how to live their
lives.
That includes your own children, who, by the time they leave
the nest, are well able to live their own lives, whether you
like it or not.
It might be worth your while to consider your own personal
need to be independent, and insist on your right to live the
way you decide.
That right belongs to everyone else on this planet. If you
insist on that right yourself, you ought to be aware that
what is fair for the goose, is also fair for the gander.
Many parents just don't want to let go. They continue well
past the time it is necessary, to tell their offspring what
to do. If you make that mistake it will come back to haunt
you.
Learn to be quiet. They are bound to do things you did not
do. They must do things you did not do. Moreover, if you
want to worry about them, then worry if they don't do things
you did not do.
The world is changing. You raised your kids to be better
than you. Let go and let them.
As to the lives of others, you should be aware that folks
make decision for their own reasons. Many of those reasons
you will never know. It it literally impossible for you to
know what another's reasons are and therefore you are not in
a position to judge whether those are good or bad reasons.
It is not your life anyway. Why would you want to talk about
someone like the joke suggests? It is your job to help
others as we travel together on this spaceship earth.
In truth, how important is it anyway? If someone, everyone,
lived their lives the way you want what good would that do
you, give you a false sense of pride? Live your own life and
let others be.

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 10 of 11
At home you may have other things to deal with in
relation to infections. Many times water-borne microbes
can come into your drinking water and you cant see
them or smell them. It is only after you have come down
with some sort of gastro-intestinal problem do you
suspect a problem. But now you are faced with nausea,
vomiting and probably diarrhea. All of these have huge,
invisible bioburden. It has been shown that even one
small amount of vomitus contains large amounts of
micro-organisms that are all harmful.
Treatment rests with symptoms and often antibiotics
(meaning: to go against life) are used. Hopefully
these will kill this organism but because of its strong
desire to live, it could take days. So if you have to
take an antibiotic, make sure you always take the
entire prescription. Otherwise the organism could find
a way to change its behaviour and live. An antiseptic
is a chemical agent that is meant to overcome the
disease-causing part of the organism. It is meant more
as a way to prevent a possible infection. It is often
used on the source such a table or instrument instead
of the person. Washing your skin off with alcohol is a
good example. But because your skin is so absorbent,
care is taken not to apply too much solution.
Lets look at prevention and protection
they go hand in
hand. There are some fairly simple and easy ways to
stay healthy right now.
Wash your hands frequently. Wash whenever you have
touched something that may have been in contact with an
undesirable or unclean object. If you recall the cycle
of infection, this would be putting pathogens onto an
object, having someone handle the object and they as
being susceptible, now get the infection, always
assuming that the bioburden is high enough and the
hosts resistance is low enough. Wash your hands -- 20
seconds with warm, soapy water. Do this as often as
possible, especially after touching publicly used
handrails, washroom door handles, and other such
objects. Stay away from people who have infections such
as flu symptoms. As you now know, the microbes travel
in many different ways. If you cant avoid the
situation, turn your head and make sure you dont
inhale the droplets
wash your hands
teach your children
how to protect themselves and others.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

I see Microsoft's Steve Ballmer is at it again. He is
notorious for throwing chairs, talking like he owns the
world and otherwise being as arrogant as the come. Today is
no exception.
In an interview he keeps promising quality, quality,
quality. It seems strange coming from a man whose only
purpose in life is money.
He seems to think that being big is the answer to the
world's and Microsoft's problems. Throughout the interview
he spoke of how big Microsoft was and that people like to
deal with big companies.
Sometimes I don't know where this man's head is. He has no
software that doesn't contain stolen parts and all parts are
copied if not stolen. He does nothing original and now
Microsoft is going to sell Vista, plus, if you want to make
sure it works you will need to purchase an "insurance"
package to get your patches. Can you imagine that? We
produce the software and we're going to charge you to keep
it virus free. That's what I mean by Ballmer being a greedy
man. Why doesn't he just produce a good product to begin
with?
However, being arrogant, Ballmer is an easy target and he
truly loves the attention. As rich as he is he feels
isolated from all the world's maladies. He has no idea what
lies in store for him by the law "as ye sow, so shall ye
reap." Like a lot of rich folks he thinks he is immune from
any negative action by the law. We'll see, Steve.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Yankee Dime: Why do we call a kiss a "yankee dime"?
This name for a kiss has its origin in our habit of
attributing to other sections of the country such behavior
and characteristics as we do not especially approve of.
"Yankees" were said to be so thrifty that they would rather
pay for something with a kiss than with a "coin". A kiss is
also called a "Quaker fip" (that is a five cent piece) for
the sam reason.

HA! HA! HA!
A cop walking his usual beat sees an old man pulling a box
on a leash, down a busy street. "Poor man," the cop thinks
to himself. "I'd better go humor him..."
"That's a nice dog you got there," says the cop to the old man.
"It isn't a dog, it's a box!" replies the old man.
"Oh, I'm sorry," says the policeman, "I thought you were
simple-minded."
The old man walks past the cop, then turns to his box,
and says, "We sure fooled him that time, didn't we, Rover?"
