Does root beer have ANY alcohol in it?

No, but the name made people think it did. In fact, the
Women's Christian Temperance Union called for a boycott of
the soft drink. Quite a controversy raged, and the Charles
E. Hires Co. was nearly devastated. Finally, a lab analyzed
samples of the drink and determined that it contained "less
alcohol than a loaf of bread." The Women's Christian
Temperance Union apologized.

What are you supposed to do with the wine cork when a waiter
hands it to you?

You're not supposed to sniff! The idea is to READ the cork
and ensure that the words on it are the same as on the label
of the wine bottle. You should also feel the cork to ensure
that it's wet. The custom originates in a time when some
restaurants would refill wine bottles with expensive labels
with less-expensive wine. You check the cork to make sure it
matches the bottle and feel for wetness to ensure that the
cork didn't dry out and let air inside the bottle (that
would spoil the wine).

Optimize Life Now™ . . . with Dr. Rhoberta Shaler

The Simplest Advice

In these days of do more, be more, have more, it may be wise
to get off the beaten track and reflect on what is best for
you in the workplace. What fits your lifestyle? What fits
your integrity? What captures your interest? What warms your
heart?

I once read a story about a young lawyer who was joining a
prestigious firm. She was spending a quiet evening with her
grandmother and she told her that she was going to do all
that she could to advance in her new organization. She would
take a night school course to become an expert in her
specialty, and join community organizations to bring in
business. She was determined to do everything and 'learn it
all'. To her mind, the picture she was painting was one of
the perfect employee. Doing all those things would win her
recognition, acceptance and an elevated career path.

The expected approval and enthusiasm from her grandmother
was not forthcoming. Smiling at her well-meaning
granddaughter, she said: "Be good at whatever you do and do
only what you are willing to do well." This startled the
young lawyer and caused her a great deal of deep thought.
After a few nights of poor sleep, she embraced her
grandmother's wisdom. Now she is the esteemed senior partner
in her firm.

Hopefully, you have chosen your work carefully. If not,
rethink it. If so, are you making sure that you are good at
what you do? Do you stay up-to-speed in your industry? Then,
add that next step, do only what you are willing to do well.
This may take some honesty but it will have tremendous
impact on all areas of your life.

Apply this wisdom liberally. Imagine the impact it will have
on your relationships!

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 11 of 11

Keep healthy. It’s your absolute best defense...if you
need to supplement your foods with vitamins and
minerals, choose the correct products. Drink lots of
fluids, especially fruit juices. Get regular
exercises…but take it easy. Prolonged exercise can
actually lower your resistance (oxidative stress). Keep
your immune system in top condition by eating wholesome
meals that contain lots of fresh vegetables and fruits.

It’s all about measurements…a little may not be a
problem, but a higher bioburden may well contribute to
long standing health issues. I wanted to share one last
example: one micro-organism, a fungus, to your
attention. I will be writing an article on it
specifically, but it is one few of us hear about. I
feel it might have a lot of importance for many people.
The fungus has the name of “Aspergillus Fumigatus“.
Here is one link to investigate. If you really think it
through, and see the ways it comes into your house and
your life, it may help you find some answers to
respiratory problems or suspected allergies.

At the end of the article, are some links and
suggestions if you would like to learn more. This isn’t
a subject everyone wants to study intensely, but just
having some understanding will help you to think a
little differently. It will help you look for answers
instead of resigning yourself to hopeless advice or
recommendations. It will also help you live your life
with more determination. Just knowing about places that
are relatively safe or ones to avoid offers you a sense
of being back in control. It gives you the freedom of
choice. If this information has been interesting and
you would like to learn more, please do some more
research. This subject can get very involved, but it
worth checking out, especially if you are on any kind
of medications. These might interact or reduce their
effectiveness.  This is an area for you and your doctor
or pharmacist to create a healthy partnership.

I hope that you now have some insight into the amounts
or bioburden of pathogens or other micro-organisms that
will surely come into your environment. You now have
some ideas as to how to protect yourself and others.

If you would like to learn more about this subject,
there are some other topics to research: nosocomial
infections, hospital air bioburden, Staphylococcus
Aureus And MRSA, Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas Aeruginosa,
Coagulase-negative Staphylococci, and Aspergillus
Fumigatus.

NosocomialInfection%20Part%207.htm,

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Viral Infections, plus many
more. These links will start your search and lead you
to others.

I would like to end with a word of caution. It is fine
to cruise all over the Internet, but please have some
protective measures for your computer installed. Many
sites will “know” you are checking them out, and will
note your identification. You could well be flooded
with all sorts of unwanted and undesirable information
and suggestions.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby

-----------------------DISCLAIMER

Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.

It must be nice to be so popular you can sell pictures of
your baby for money. That's what Angelina Jolie and Brad
Pitt are doing.

They are actually selling the pics and giving the money to
charity.

It is likely no two people on the planet are harassed as
much as these two. They paparazzi follow these two around
even worse than they followed Princess Diana. They are
continually harassed and have virtually no private life of
their own.

They prevented the press from taking picture of their
children and in this case took some of their own and making
them available to the press, if the press pays. Good for
them.

The press is another of those institutions that cares not
for people and too many people who work in or for the press
perform worse than vultures, for a vulture at least waits
until its food is dead. The press are part of the killing
process.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?

Abacus: Where did we get the name "abacus" for the counting
device used by the Chinese and others?

The device takes its name from the ancient Phoenician word
abak meaning "dust" - because the mathematicians of that day
used to cover tables with dust in order to draw their
diagrams and figure their problems.

HA! HA! HA!

Two boy scouts went on a nature hike in the hills picking
hickory nuts. Along the way, they filled their small pails
and then started to fill their pockets and shirts.

When they could hold no more nuts, they started down the
country road until they came across a cemetery. The boys
decided that would be a good place to stop and rest and
divide out the nuts. The two boys sat in the shade of a
large oak tree and unloaded their pockets and buckets by
dumping all of the nuts in a large pile. In the process,
two of them rolled away and rested near the road.
The boys then proceeded to divide out the nuts...
"One for you. One for me. One for you. One for me."

As they were doing this, another boy was passing by and
happened to hear them. He looked into the cemetery, but
could not see the boys, because they were obscured by
the tree. He hesitated a moment and then ran back to town.

"Father! Father!" he yelled as he entered his house.
"The cemetery. Come quick!"

"What's the matter?" his father asked.

"No time to explain," the boy frantically panted. "Follow me!"

The boy and his father ran up the country road and stopped
when they reached the cemetery. They stopped at the side of
the road and all fell silent for a few moments. Then the
father asked his son what was wrong.

"Do you hear that?" he whispered. Both people listened
intently and heard the Scouts. "One for me. One for you.
One for me. One for you..."

The boy then blurted out, "The devil and the Lord are
dividing the souls!!"

The father was skeptical but silent - *until* a few moments
later as the Scouts completed dividing out the nuts and
one Scout said to the other, "Now, as soon as we get those
two *nuts* down by the road, we'll have them all!!!"
