What is the difference between a weasel and an ermine?
A weasel and an ermine are the same animal. The animal's
coat changes from reddish-brown to white during the winter.
When the coat is white, it's an ermine. When it's brown,
it's a weasel.
What popular singer spent more than $400,000 for flowers
during a 20-month spending spree?
Elton John admits he once ran up a $418,340 florist bill
during a $57 million, 20-month spending spree. The pop
singer told the British High Court: "I like flowers. I don't
have any people to leave my money to. I'm a single man. I
like to spend money. It's my money to spend." The testimony
came in John's lawsuit against ex-manager Andrew Haydon and
Pricewaterhouse Coopers, his former accountants. He accused
them of mishandling his finances.

'GMA' Blowing Chance At No. 1?
The Wall Street Journal
ABC'S "Good Morning America" dearly wants to grab the No. 1
morning slot, but just as NBC's dominant "Today"--with the
departure of Katie Couric--seems ripe for a fall, "GMA" is
having some problems of its own, The Wall Street Journal
reports. In the last six months, the show has lost its host,
weatherman, and executive producer, and there have been
rumors that co-host Diane Sawyer is ready to up and leave.
The stakes are high in the battle between the two programs,
as early-morning news shows are garnering ever more viewers
and ad dollars--a contrast to the network evening news
broadcasts, which have been in a long and steady decline.
"The morning shows are the inheritors of the old function of
the evening news," says Bob Bengtson, a former ABC News
executive. "For a lot of people, the morning is the new
dinnertime."
Fur Flies In Reality Show
Associated Press via ABCNews.com
In the latest twist on "reality" programming, 10 cats taken
from animal shelters will live in a New York house to vie
for an executive-level job with Meow Mix cat food, reports
the Associated Press. The battle of the felines will be
shown in three-minute segments Friday night on Animal Planet
channel for 10 weeks from a Webcam-equipped "Meow Mix House"
on Madison Avenue. "This thing is very tongue-in-cheek,"
says Ira Cohen, who calls the campaign/show "a program
within a program" aimed not just at getting humans to buy
more Meow Mix, but to raise awareness of pet adoptions. Two
winners will be chosen--one by judges and one by
viewers--with the judges' choice getting a new family and
the title of "feline vice president of research and
development" at the company.
Plucking Big Bird
Boston Globe
Some Republicans in Congress are pushing an effort that
would cut more than $115 million from PBS and NPR, the
Boston Globe reports. On a party-line vote this week, the
House subcommittee that oversees public TV funding approved
the cut, which would slice the Corporation for Public
Broadcasting's budget by 23 percent to $380 million. A
similar move last year was thwarted after aggressive
lobbying from PBS and congressional Democrats. ''We've got
to keep our priorities straight," says Rep. Ralph Regula
(R.-Ohio). "You're going to choose between giving a little
more money to handicapped children versus providing
appropriations for public broadcasting." Counters
Massachusetts Democrat Ed Markey: ''The Republicans have
decided to go hunting for 'Big Bird' and 'Clifford the Big
Red Dog' once again . . . PBS is right at the top of their
hit list--always has been and always will be, until they can
destroy it."
Here's To Beer Ads
Roanoke Times
Two student newspapers in Virginia are fighting for their
right to party--or at least to advertise one, reports the
Roanoke Times. Publications at both Virginia Tech and the
University of Virginia are suing over state rules that
prohibit them from running any branded alcohol ads. And they
have some of the best lawyers in the business backing them
up, as the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia filed
a federal lawsuit against the state Department of Alcoholic
Beverage Control on their behalf of the papers. The suit
charges that Virginia's regulations are violating the First
Amendment rights of the two papers, noting that other media
are not restricted in the same way, despite being available
to people under 21. Says Ellen Biltz, incoming editor of the
Collegiate Times: "This isn't just for our newspaper. It's a
violation of the rights of all the college publications."
Meanwhile, the ACLU's legal director points out that a
similar rule in Pennsylvania was tossed out by a federal
appeals court in 2004.

To fear is to deny who you are. Fear is a signal that you should
be aware of a condition you don't like. It is to keep you keen so
you can make the fight or flight decision. It is not to control your
thoughts so you automatically run from a new experience.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Why Do We Have To Be Healthy?
PART 3 of 5
But lives change. And so does your thinking when you
face illness with a close family member. Suddenly you
realise they have become sick. Thats an action word:
not just a thing. And this is happening, right now and
you wish you could stop it. But you dont have any idea
where to start. Our medical community is still not
inclined to teach prevention as opposed to treatment.
If you recall the original definition, you realise that
health is not just about your physical being. It is as
much how you think for yourself: (mental) you realise
how much your environment influences you (social). You
realise how important your beliefs and values are in
your life: how crucial they are to your identity. You
suddenly start to pay attention to stories about people
getting better instead of dying or getting worse. You
learn that being unhealthy means that a part of you is
technically degenerating, getting worse, not
functioning as it should. You become aware of unusual
opportunities. You realise how fragile your life is and
how much you want to have health back again.
I work with people who have Parkinsons, Fibromyalgia,
epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), etc. but my passion
is to help people with dizziness, vertigo, hearing
fluctuations and tinnitus. But for all these people,
just managing to get through a day is hard work and
takes tremendous determination. Their days are filled
with fatigue: the kind you simply cant imagine. The
lack of energy to get on a housecoat let alone a full
outfit. If you have ever had the flu, you might
appreciate the feeling. But this lasts day after day,
with no hope for relief. Or what about the young adult
just starting college and finds his foot dragging a
bit; it doesnt work like the other one. And he gets a
diagnosis of MS. Or the active sports guy (or gal) who
ends up with a spinal cord injury and is paralyzed for
ever. These examples are physical in nature, but each
has a huge mental and social component to it. What
motivation is there for the person whose ear screams
periodically and he cant get away from it. How tiring!
How aggravating! Or the gal trapped in the wheelchair
with MS who now cant be independent any longer. No
longer will she be able to look after her family as she
has always dreamed she would. I know all of these
people would love to have the state of being hale,
sound, or whole, in body, mind, or soul; especially,
the state of being free from physical disease or pain.
Those are huge reasons to be healthy or to restore
health.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
Well, if you read our title article you can see that a good
part of our world seems to be involved in the game of
one-upsmanship and other frivolous nonsense.
Most of the people involved in these things are bound, bent
and determined they are involved in something terribly
important. Some will have their lives revolve around what
they are doing here.
Yet, in the grand scheme of things what they are doing is
entirely meaningless. It will have no material affect on the
lives of mankind and do nothing whatever to benefit man's
condition in earth.
Every single story in the article has something to do with
greed, man's chief motivator. I speak this way because I see
this overall happening wherever I turn. Man's selfish
pursuit to be better and have more than his neighbor
occupies his mind far more than his Maker does.
Man chases moonbeams unto his death. It has ever been so and
will ever be so.
Oh! Look at all the changes in technology over the years.
Look at how much better man is living today than he was a
hundred years ago - is that what you are saying? What
technology? Computers and nuclear weapons, a lethal
combination for killing? Computers that occupy man's mind to
the end he no longer looks to his Maker?
You realize I am not saying that man should look to the
church, quite the contrary. However, I am saying man must
look to his Maker, by going inside, and learning his Maker's
laws, for failure to do so will ultimately destroy mankind.
If a man, a village, a city, a country has everything that
is possible in man's imagination, what have they got? From
what I see, they just have more death and bigger land fill
sites.
It might be time to make a decision as to what path you are
going to follow, man's or your Maker's.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Dandelion: How did the "dandelion" get its name?
It comes from the jagged edges of its leaves - which were
supposed to look like a lion's teeth. The French form is
dent de lion - that is, "tooth of the lion".

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
"Commitment is that turning point in your life when you
seize the moment and convert it into an opportunity to
alter you destiny." -- Denis Waitley
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
HA! HA! HA!
This is an imaginary situation, but I think it is fun to
decide what one would do...
The situation: You are in the Middle East, and there is
a huge flood in progress. Many homes have been lost,
water supplies compromised and structures destroyed.
You are a photographer getting still photos for the CNN
news service and are traveling alone, looking for
particularly poignant scenes.
You come across Osama Bin Laden who has been swept away by
the floodwaters. He is barely hanging on to a tree limb and
is about to go under. You can either put down your camera
and save him, or take a Pulitzer Prize winning photograph
of him as he loses his grip on the limb.
So, here's the question and think carefully before you
answer the question below:
Would you use a wide angle lens, or a telephoto?? ;-)

REMEMBER! - IF YOU SEE IT IN thePEBBLE - IT IS SO!
Happiness is not something that comes with a new car, home, coat

complete and absolute control, unless you yield that control to
someone or something.
