Why do we say a computer or computer program has a "bug" in
it when it malfunctions?
Where did the expression "son of a gun" originate?

What was the first "gold" record?
Glen Miller's 1941 "Chattanooga Choo Choo" earned him a
gold-covered master of his recording. The record rocketed
past the 1 million mark within just a few months of its
release. The first gold ALBUM was the 1949 Broadway cast
recording of "Oklahoma," which was the first long-playing
album to sell more than a million copies.
Where did the expression "raining cats and dogs" originate?
Well, one plausible theory is that the expression originated
in 17th century England in reference to a common tragedy.
Drainage systems were not the same then as they are now and
during heavy downpours of rain, the gutters would overflow
with cats and dogs and other small animals that had drowned.
The situation gave the appearance that it had literally
rained "cats and dogs."

STRANGE BITS AND PIECES!
In 1978 the World Water Speed record was made by Ken Warby
from Australia. His average speed was 317.6 mph, and his
jet-powered hydroplane was 27 feet long called "Spirit of
Australia." Warby built the boat himself in his back yard.

Do You Demonstrate Simplicity?
Do you feel the calmness of a deep breath when you say or
hear the word, "simplicity"? Does it conjure up space,
serenity, peace and other desirable things? What would it
take to bring simplicity into your values?
This world is working hard to make things bigger, faster,
newer, complex, convoluted, urgent, anxious and fearful.
You have probably noticed that. At the end of a too full day
you can feel as though you have been accelerated through a
time machine without your consent, can't you? The important
part, of course, is to notice that you did give your
consent, otherwise you would not have done it. This is a
beginning realization of your part in creating simplicity.
Sarah Ban Breathnach, author of Simple Abundance says, "
True simplicity is both buoyant and bountiful, able to
liberate depressed spirits from the bondage and burden of
extravagance and excess." If there are things weighing you
down or rituals or practices that hold you back, it may be
time to consider lightening up.
Is there simplicity in your home? Is there space around
things for the air to circulate, or, are pieces of furniture
and "things" packed tightly together? Are surfaces clear
and spacious? Does every "thing" have a designated spot?
Does clutter get taken care of immediately before it becomes
an art form? The dictionary says clutter is a crowded or
confused mass or collection, and that, "to clutter" means to
fill or cover with scattered or disordered things that
impede movement or reduce effectiveness. That says it all,
doesn't it? If you have clutter, you are getting in your
own way.
Recently, we moved and my husband and I reduced the things
in our lives significantly. We used a three part rule--if a
thing was beautiful, functional or memorable, it could stay.
This rule had a second part: if the things that were kept
had not been appreciated, used or held within the next year,
they had to leave then. Hopefully, this was a great step
toward simplicity.
For today, survey your surroundings--your home, your room,
your office...or even just one drawer. Can you simplify it
in any way? Extend this practice as you have time and
inclination. It will move you towards a deeper sense of
peace and tranquility.

Why Do We Have To Be Healthy?
PART 5 of 5
I have heard amazing stories about children with ADHD
and Autism whose symptoms have lessened considerably. I
know people with all sorts of other degenerative
conditions who took remedial action. That basically
included feeding these bodies the missing ingredients
How did they find what was missing? They assumed that
because of the severity of their condition, they would
need a lot of support. And they gave their bodies
proper foods. In the final analysis you know that all
your body needs is food of the right type, and enough
of it. Dont we eat lots of protein before a test? Or
drink lots of juices? And eat salads? We instinctively
know that steroids arent exactly healthy for you body.
And maybe the drugs you take are adding chemicals but
no food value. Changing your health knowledge and
perspective isnt going to happen overnight. But if you
choose to be healthier, it will reflect in many areas
of your life, especially in your attitude and
behaviors. Would it not be worth doing some focussed
research? You may end up with a big shopping list if
your body is really challenged, but it is worth the
trouble of finding ways to get your health back. You do
have choices. You have a good brain and intuition that
will guide you. If you compare a life with fibromyalgia
and life of health, I know which you would choose.
Health is getting up each day, anticipating doing all
your goals for the day, with energy a positive attitude
and confidence that you are safe, happy, and fit. I
feel anything less than this is unhealthy and your
body has mechanisms already in place to restore you
back to health. So why do we need to healthy? Its our
natural state of being.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
I see the world is doing its usual thing today. Some are
blowing up and killing others and those others are fighting
back.
Microsoft is in the news twice or more today. The have
released the biggest security patch in years, plus I see
they and Firefox are dropping support for Windows 98
claiming it is obsolete.
In another Windows story it now seems that Microsoft is
getting far more information from your computers than anyone
realized. They put an automatic little feature into Windows
that calls up Microsoft every time you boot up. It sends
them information about your computer, your IP and your
activities. You talk about spyware - Microsoft is worse than
any out there. And you can't block it or turn it off. Sorry
folks, Microsoft is going to know all that you do.
On other scenes we have spoken about global warming before.
Today it seems that with the polar ice caps melting ice
age insects are being found - alive. Interesting things
happening.
Finally some good news. A study has been done involving both
young and old on what they think about happiness in old age.
The study revealed the many misconceptions of both these groups
and actually made the case that seniors really are happier
than they were when they were young.
On that note, have a happy day. Believe me every day on this
side of the grass is a good one.

WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Farce: How did the word "farce" come to mean "comedy"?
"Farce" comes from the Latin farcire, meaning "to stuff."
The early miracle plays were padded or stuffed with jokes
and low comedy scenes - and so this type of comedy came to
be called a "farce."

HA! HA! HA!
A man started to snore in his seat at the opera.
"Please stop your snoring," the usher pleaded. "You are
disturbing the others..."
"Look, buddy," the man said angrily, "I paid for this
seat and I'll do whatever I want!"
"Yes, sir," replied the usher.
"But please be considerate...you are keeping everybody awake!"
