What is the difference between "assault" and "battery"?
Technically, you don't have to actually touch someone to be
charged with assaulting them. Assault is the THREAT to do
bodily harm by someone who has the ability to do so and
thereby places the victim in fear of imminent danger.
Shaking your fist in someone's face, for instance, can be
considered assault. Battery involves actual physical contact
that is intentional and without the consent of the victim.
However, injury does NOT have to occur for battery to be
charged.
What exactly is manslaughter?
Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of a person without
malice or the intent to do so. Usually, it involves some
form of negligence that leads to a death. It is considered a
lesser form of murder.

The dirty truth about allergies
A study that compared lab rodents with their wild
counterparts could shed light on whether overly hygienic
environments cause allergies and autoimmune disease.
Blood tests found more of a particular kind of immune
protein in the wild animals, which may mean they are better
at coping with potential allergens, researchers say.
It is estimated that some 40 to 50 million people suffer
from allergies in the US alone. The fact that Western
populations appear to have the highest rate of allergies
prompted some scientists to come up with the hygiene
hypothesis, which argues that exposure to more natural
environments such as farms early in life helps train the
body to respond appropriately to harmless microbes and
pollen.
In increasingly sterile Western societies, people are no
longer exposed to these allergens, which is why they suffer
from so many allergies, the hypothesis claims.
Wild rodents
To investigate this, William Parker of the Duke University
Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, US, and his
colleagues collected 58 wild rats and 10 wild mice. They
extracted blood from the animals and compared serum levels
of antibodies with those found in 45 rats and 20 mice bred
and raised in the laboratory - which they claim parallels
the cleaner environment of modern homes
They discovered that the wild rodents had significantly
higher levels of IgE and IgG antibodies, which are produced
in response to contact with foreign particles, than their
laboratory counterparts.
The wild rats and mice had 2.5 times and 11.5 times as much
IgE as the laboratory rodents, respectively. And they had
about double the IgG of their lab-raised counterparts.
Previous tests on US hospital personnel and farmers in
Rwanda showed that people living in traditional villages
also had higher IgE levels than those in modern
environments, says Parker, although people who live in
hygienic environments and suffer from allergies also have
high levels of IgE.
Calming effect
Parker speculates that chronically high IgE levels - from
exposure to plant particles and non-lethal microbes in
childhood - somehow prevent the immune system from
overreacting to them.
He adds that a similar process may take place with IgG
antibodies, sometimes associated with autoimmune disease.
The new findings are worth following up with further
studies, says Jean Francois Bach of the Necker Hospital for
Children in Paris, France. The idea that there is a
difference between wild and lab animals is significant, he
says.
But he adds that the findings do not necessarily support the
hygiene hypothesis, since IgE can be elevated by other
things, such as parasites.

Cleaning, Disinfecting, and Sterilizing
A Few Basic Essentials To Keep In Mind
PART 3 of 12
Here are four examples of dirt that you might want to
clean: to create a safe environment. First, you might
be looking at a toothless cherubic 5 month old baby
whose little soft face is covered in vegetable matter
or ground up meat, and this mess found its way into its
hair. Next you might be looking at a thermometer that
is fragile and may or may not have been used
you cant
tell from its dried state. Thirdly, you could be
holding up a cut finger with blood dripping down your
hand. Lastly you have to deal with a sink full of dirty
dishes from someone who has the flu. All these are
examples of dirty things. All need to be treated
differently. How do you choose the appropriate method?
Use some common sense. We all have lots of it, but
sometimes its not exercised very well. Or we get
advice from others who dont know as much as we do.
Trust yourself: trust your instincts. But please dont
see an infection or disease in every corner of your
home. It isnt there.
Here are a few things to consider when choosing a
product or action to get rid of the unwanted dirt. What
is the material made of? What is its use? Who would be
the next person to use it? Is it too large to be picked
up? Can it be submerged? These will become a little
clearer as you read on. You do this organizational
process very quickly and naturally in your mind: it
takes seconds. But you stop short when faced with an
item you dont know how to handle safely. In this case,
people think they need to really kill this unseen and
unknown and may be a harmful visitor. Most of the
time that is overkill: totally unnecessary. Soap and
water will handle most things very well and not cause
any harm to you or your environment. Lets face it; we
dont need to add any more chemicals to either. I
mention surfaces because that is all that you will be
in contact with. Or be concerned about.

PERCEPTIONS . . . by Ken Darby
-----------------------DISCLAIMER
Some around me think I am an opinionated old goat.
Whether that be true or not I will sometimes, in this column,
talk about things people don't like to talk about - or don't want
out in the open. Take it all with a grain of salt.
Do your own thinking, and don't accept the things I say as
gospel. They are only mental meanderings from a simple soul.
-----------------------END DISCLAIMER
It seems we live in a world where we are "damned if we do
and damned if we don't". The title article today makes the
suggestion our national allergy problem may be because we
spend too much time being "clean", that if we tolerated a
little more dirt - a little less clean - we might build up a
better tolerance to the things that cause allergies. That
study is not the first or only look at that proposition. It
has been advanced before. And, it makes sense if you think
about it a little.
On the other hand science has clearly proven that
cleanliness goes a long way to preventing disease outbreaks.
So what do we do? Each person must find their own way I
guess.
It puts me in mind of other confusing issues brought on by
studies. In my lifetime eggs have been in and out of favor
with science some three or four different times. First it
was good to eat eggs, then it was not, then it was and then
it wasn't. By the time one gets through all this, trying to
live their lives as science suggests, confusion is the
result.
I wonder, sometimes, if we are putting too much faith in
medicine and science? Are we truly supposed to have our
hearts exchanged, our kidneys etc.? Are we really supposed
to be put on life saving procedures that last for a year or
more?
I have no answers for these kinds of questions, such that
would satisfy the masses. I only know what is right for my
life. I know that when I go inside to commune with my Maker
I am given answers and guidance. I know that whatever I am
told from within that meditation will be correct and will
peacefully lead me to accomplishment. I know I can be immune
to the ailments of the world and certainly need not be
frustrated with world affairs, that I can live in and
broadcast peace and love unto any I meet. Given the law, As
ye sow, so shall ye reap, I would say living that way brings
on more of the same.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
WHY DO WE SAY IT?
Half-Cocked: Where doe the expression "go off half cocked"
come from?
From hunting. A gun at half cock is in the safety position;
it cannot be fired. But a hunter many, in his excitement at
sighting game, raise the gun to his shoulder and pull the
trigger while still "half-cocked." Nothing happens. And so,
"To go off half-cocked" means to attempt something in a
hurry without proper preparation and to fail in achieving
the end.
