The following is an excerpt from "Just An Online Minute"
a division of MediaPost. It points out the need for all
newsletters to be compliant with the new Can-Spam law.
The law requires, among other things these three items:
1. Your list must be "Opt-in". No "harvesting"
2. You must have "unsub" links within each newsletter.
3. You must publish complete contact information in
each newsletter.
Personally, I don't know why these things should be
an issue. thePEBBLE has done this since it's inception
over five years ago.
I always considered it a privilege to serve you, our
reader. If you have any questions or problems with
thePEBBLE I wanted you to be able to reach me to
resolve them. As a result I have always published
thePEBBLE within these guidelines, only because
it make so much sense.

Bob Vila, who's made millions hawking home improvement
tips to the masses, could be in a heap 'o trouble. Vila's
website (BobVila.com) has come under scrutiny for alleged
violations of the federal Can-Spam law which went into
effect earlier this year. A lawsuit filed today in federal court
on behalf of Hypertouch, a Foster City, Calif., Internet
Service Provider, alleges that BlueStreamMedia,
Sacramento, and BVWebTies, Boston, which owns
BobVila.com, violated the Can-Spam law by sending
Hypertouch customers unsolicited and unwanted email
ads for Vila's "Home Again Newsletter." The suit may
well be the first filed alleging violations of the Can-Spam law.
The suit alleges that BobVila.com sent email with fraudulent
headers and that it distributed email to randomly generated
and harvested addresses. "The Can-Spam Act provides
only the most minimal protections to the public," said
Hypertouch President and Founder Joe Wagner in a press
release. "But BobVila.com and BlueStream Media failed
to observe even those." The suit alleges that the defendants
sent spam email ads with fraudulent headers and no
legally required physical address. They also sent email
to randomly generated and harvested addresses, and
to addresses that had been submitted to the "opted-out"
links of other spam.
If the allegations bear out, Vila's empire could become
a landmark example of how not to run a web business.
Vila has become a fairly popular brand of mainstream
America, peddling household how-tos to do-it-yourselfers.
He's considered a trusted voice on the domestic fix-it
scene even if he is a shil for Sears. If it turns out that his
home improvement empire isn't Can-Spam compliant,
think of how many other web businesses aren't - or is
this just a red herring? It remains to be seen. One thing's
for sure, the legal eagles' fangs are out and ready to lay
into alleged Can-Spam violators.

Your browser saves the pages you visit. When you
go back, the page is pulled out of storage from your
hard drive, assuming it hasn't changed. That speeds
up your surfing.
You can change the amount of space set aside for
the cache. To do that, click Tools, then Internet
Options, then General. Click the Settings button.
Under "Temporary Internet files folder," adjust the
slider. Click OK and OK.

I once had a lovely eighty-plus lady come in
to our operating rooms on a beautiful, sunny
Saturday afternoon. She needed her fractured wrist
set. It was so warm and lovely that she wanted to
can some cherries for her family. So she got out h
er chair, climbed up, and tried to reach the
canning jars, which her daughter had thoughtfully
replaced on the top shelf of the kitchen cupboard
after the last use. Unfortunately the canning was
to be a surprise for this daughter and the mom
didn't want to ask her to help bring down the
containers. She lost her balance and fell. She
was very lucky that she only broke her wrist and
not her hip. But there are many devices for
reaching out of the way places. Better still: move
them to a more practical, safer location, if you
think they might be used. If your "special friend"
likes to eat in a spot other than the kitchen,
encourage them to do so, by adapting a tea trolley
with pretty dishes and space for all "condiments"
for any meal. The easier meal preparation is, the
more nourishment they will take. Have a pretty
board as a lap tray. A regular tray is a bit
awkward with the ledges around the edge. A touch
of elegance: try using a wine goblet, cradling and
lifting it with both hands. Often gnarled hands
have a tough time holding ordinary drinking
glasses. Make sure all furniture is at the right
height. Add extra pillows or wooden blocks under
chairs to stabilize them as needed. Two story
home? Keep a small basket at the bottom of the
stairs to collect items you'll need to take
upstairs and another basket at the top for the
reverse trip. Bumping the basket down the stairs
is perfectly acceptable. In fact, they could fill
a duffel bag and throw it down the stairs. Do
what's easiest and the least hassle! Cutting down
the number of times you have to go up and down the
stairs will save your energy for more enjoyable
activities.

on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures

"Aaaaah! Señors. It is good to see you. What brings you
to my humble little city this day? Mr. Ben it is good to see
you. I have not seen you since Missy got married." Miguele
came over and gave Ben a big hug, then Sam.
"It is good to see you again, too, Miguele. Sam and I were
doing some traveling and we decided that seeing you
would be a good thing. I hope and trust all is well with you
and the family?" asked Ben.
"Aah! We are just fine. Life is good to us ever since we met
Missy. The girls keep us well looked after. I keep bringing
home kids and they keep looking after them." Miguele
laughed, "We now have twelve kids at home, including
Romano's brother and sister. My Abetta, she likes having
kids around, especially when the girls look after them."
The men laughed. It was true, Abetta was a lover of children.
She would cook all day long if she knew it was going to
feed some youngster.
After the initial greetings all three got into Miguele's truck.
"I have no more work today. Come home with me and
see the family." he said.
"That is just what we wanted to do, Miguele." said Sam.
They drove through the city on the way to Miguele's place
when Ben asked him a question.
"Miguele, do you think we could drive by the orphanage?
I have heard a lot about it but have never seen it."
"I'll get as close as I can. We won't be able to get within two
blocks of it though, the crowds are still there day and night.
People come into this city from many other countries, just
to be healed. They believe the shrine has special powers.
Riata and Oomano tell me no, but the public believe that
and I guess it is that belief that heals them. They do not
understand this, but that is how it works." said Miguele.
"If you don't mind, I'd like to walk up to it to see." said Ben.
"In that case we will go in the back. The kids will let us in.
There you will have a good view of things." said Miguele.
He turned the next corner and began to drive in the
direction of the orphanage.
Miguele had been right. There were cars and other
vehicles starting to bunch up well before they got near
the orphanage. Miguele found a parking spot about
three blocks away and the three of them began to walk.
They entered the alley, behind the orphanage. Miguele
looked up and saw the sentry and waved. The sentry
waved back. All was well, although the sentry still passed
the signal to the orphanage.
They were behind the orphanage and turned to go
inside. No one came to meet them because they could
be seen from within the depths of the darkness of the
orphanage. They were permitted to enter.
The kids came to say hi to Miguele. They could sense
Sam and Ben were masters, from their calm and loving
demeanor, and, so, were made welcome.
Two of the youngsters, Reno and Amenti came over to
Ben and gave him a hug. Each whispered in his ear
"Welcome to our work. It is good to have you join us."
"Thank you!" said Ben, knowing what that now meant. He
looked at these two. They were still in their teens. Reno
was early teens. Inside Ben marveled they had already
accomplished.
He got the response back "Be not surprised. We were
taught by Riata. She still works with us today. We have
been fortunate to come into this knowledge early, but it
took many lifetimes for us to get here." Ben "knew" this
in his mind. It was not a spoken word. He thought
"As with me."
They smiled at him. They knew.
Ben looked out front. There were masses of people,
all moving slowly past the shrine, then to a table where
they took some hot food, plus water. Some of them put
money in a bucket that was sitting on the ground near
the table.
More were coming. The stream of people seemed never
ending. "That is the way it is here, day and night. The
flow of people never stops." said one of the children,
who just came in from his turn at serving the food.
Ben knew the story of the shrine was being passed
along by word of mouth, to all who attended, not by the
kids, but by all the people there.
