Is it true that lack of sleep can lead to disease?

New research suggests just that. Recent research links
chronic undersleeping to such serious disorders as
diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. A national study
that tracked the lifestyle habits of 71,617 nurses found
that those who got only five hours of sleep a night or less
over a decade had a 39 percent greater risk of heart
attack than those who slept eight hours. Other studies
linked lack of sleep to diabetes and obesity.

How many auto accidents a year are attributed to fatigue?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration, more than 100,000 auto accidents
a year may be related to fatigue.

And So We Grow!
by Ken Darby

In 1900, fathers prayed their children would learn English.
Today, fathers pray their children will speak English.

In 1900, if a father put a roof over his family's head, he
was a success. Today, it takes a roof, deck, pool, and
4-car garage. And that's just the vacation home.

In 1900, a father waited for the doctor to tell him when
the baby arrived. Today, a father must wear a smock,
know how to breathe, and make sure film is in the video
camera.

In 1900, fathers passed on clothing to their sons.
Today, kids wouldn't touch Dad's clothes if they were
sliding naked down an icicle.

In 1900, fathers could count on children to join the
family business. Today, fathers pray their kids will soon
come home from college long enough to teach them how
to work the computer and set the VCR.

In 1900, fathers pined for old country Romania, Italy,
or Russia. Today, fathers pine for old country
Hank Williams.

In 1900, fathers shook their children gently and whispered,
"Wake up, it's time for school." Today, kids shake their fathers
violently at 4 a.m., shouting: "Wake up, it's time for hockey
practice."

In 1900, a father came home from work to find his wife
and children at the supper table. Today, a father comes
home to a note: "Jimmy's at baseball, Cindy's at
gymnastics, I'm at gym, Pizza in fridge."

In 1900, fathers and sons would have heart-to-heart
conversations while fishing in a stream. Today, fathers
pluck the headphones off their sons' ears and shout,
"WHEN YOU HAVE A MINUTE.."

In 1900, a father gave a pencil box for Christmas, and
the kid was all smiles. Today, a father spends $800 at
Toys 'R' Us, and the kid screams: "I wanted Sega!"

As one matures they come upon the realization that
the only thing constant is change. I don't mean it suddenly
dawns on them. I mean that maturity brings with it the
realization, right down to the core level, that change is
going to happen all the time.

Hopefully, along with that realization comes a willingness
to accept change, and a willingness to get out and do,
learn, be what the changes are bringing.

I say this because I know too many folk, who, just wanting
to "rest" want things to remain the same. I feel sorry for
these people, because things cannot remain the same,
indeed we do not really and truly want them to remain
the same.

We grow, as things change, we grow. That is to say, if
we embrace change, enjoy it, look forward to it, we grow.
That is the "norm" we should strive for. It is the "norm" that
will help us enjoy a long, fruitful, happy and healthy life.
It is this "norm" that gives us a real good attitude toward
life and helps us get through it with peace and dignity.

If you let it get you down, life can be pretty depressing,
and for no reason other than choice. I am known as a
happy, enthusiastic person. I like to be "up" and positive,
looking for the good things in life. That, now, has become
my reputation. I like that, yet folks don't realize that I made
a clear and conscious decision to be this way. And, they
know not how often I must reach down to my bootstraps
and pull my attitude up to stay that way. They think I'm
just "naturally" that way. Not so. It is by choice.

I find life offers many, many opportunities to be "down".
I discovered it takes no work at all to find all the things
around you that you don't like. It does take effort,
however, to overlook those things and go looking for
the good things in life. And that, my friend, is a choice.

And So We Grow!

Try not to get in the habit of closing your

the window instead by clicking on the 'minus' icon

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Health Question On Positioning
PART 4 of 4

Qualified doctors and nurses staff ICUs. All have adequate
credentials to manage special situations. As well, there are
policies and procedures that must be adhered to. But also
remember this patient is in ICU with medical staff in
attendance. So there might be additional orders from a doctor.

The staff will follow reasonable nursing measures and can
explain their actions. If the patient is potentially harmful to
themselves or someone else, the staff must exercise professional
judgement. They are expected to do what a reasonable, prudent
nurse would do.

I was asked what possible injuries could develop to wrists and
ankles. In a normal hospital bed, I can't think of any injuries
that might arise if the person is sleeping. And if they
restrained with special "tools" or equipment, these are padded
to prevent such injuries. If this is the case, there is also
additional documentation and observation required. Again, there
are policies in place and a doctor has ordered what they feel is
appropriate to keep the patient safe. This will all depend on
what obvious signs and symptoms are presented by the patient.

You might also be wondering just what happens in an operating
room or recovery room where a person is definitely unconscious.
Again the same measures apply. All limbs or pressure points are
protected and all skin surfaces are examined for any problems
pro-op and again checked post op. Any discrepancies are noted on
the patient record.

Nurses and doctors pride themselves as being "patient
advocates". They take their role of protecting their patients
very seriously.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"No!" said Billy.

"Well, Billy, the answer is yes, you could have. It is just
that you had not been taught, yet. You had not yet learned
the work you are now doing. You are learning it now. It is
the same with learning higher law, Billy. You think you
can't do the things we do, because you know nothing
about higher law. But if you learn about those things,
what do you think will happen?" asked Sam.

"I guess I will be able to do them!" observed Billy.

"That's right. So it is a matter of choice. You can choose
to learn to live by higher law or you can choose
not to." said Sam.

"Mr. Henry, you always make everything look so
simple." said Billy.

"That is because they are simple, Billy. The more
complicated you make things the further away from
truth you get. Keep things simple Billy." said Sam.

"Oh! Hello you two!" said Alewka, coming into the
kitchen, rubbing her eyes, "Gee did I ever get a good
nights sleep last night."

"Hello Mrs. Henry!" said Billy.

"Hello Hon! How are you today?" asked Sam.

"I'm terrific. I feel just great. You?" asked Alewka.

"Me too." answered Sam.

Alewka went over to the coffee pot and poured
herself a cup, then came to her usual spot at the table.

"Billy and I were just speaking about higher law. He
didn't think he could live by higher law. Now, I'm not
so sure he's so sure." said Sam with a smile on his lips.

"Different, isn't it Billy?" said Alewka.

Billy had the advantage of youth going for him. He
was not yet so entrenched into set ways of thinking,
and, so, he had the opportunity to think that maybe
these things would work.

"It is that, Mrs. Henry. I have not seen anyone live this
way. It is so easy!" said Billy, "I mean life looks so easy
the way you guys live."

"It is easy. We prefer to think of it as simple. All men may
live this way. They need only choose. None are exempt
except as they make themselves exempt." said Alewka.

"So, where are those two lazy sons of mine?" asked
Alewka.

"Still in bed I guess. Billy said they didn't get in until
after midnight and that they had quite a game of
basketball." said Sam.

"Do you want me to get them up, Ma'am?" asked Billy.

"No. Not necessary. We'll let them sleep for a while.
The smell of coffee will get them, too." responded Alewka.

"Mr. Henry said there were a bunch of new clothes for
me in the dresser drawers and in the closet. Thank you
Ma'am. I appreciate that." said Billy.

"My, you are polite, Billy. Thank you." said Alewka.

"Just learning these things Ma'am. I think I'll go change
into something right now, may I?" asked Billy.

"Certainly, Billy. There is no need to ask us." said Sam.

Billy was off. He was up the stairs in three steps, and into
his room. New clothes! He didn't get new clothes very often.
This was going to be like Christmas.

He opened the drawers of the dresser, and, sure enough,
there were six pair of jeans, his favorite kind too. Then he
went over to his closet and there were a half dozen shirts
there, every one of them his favorite style.

Back to his drawers and he took out a pair of sock,
underwear, and a t-shirt.

Getting completely undressed he started over. He dressed
in his new duds from head to foot. He felt good.

Then he rolled up all his old clothes and set them by the
door. And, looking at how messy his bed was he did his
best to make it, and to tidy up the rest of the room. Next he
grabbed his old clothes and walked down to the kitchen.

I had good results yesterday with my meetings. For the

in principle. Our next task is to view, assess, work with
one another's product to gain familiarity, then meet early

is going to work out just fine.
