TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------

Is it true that soap is made from animal fats?

What is the origin of the term "soap opera"?

--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Can you really learn in your sleep?

No one has really proven that listening to tape recordings
as you sleep can help you learn a new language, but there
is plenty of evidence to suggest we do indeed learn in our
sleep. Researchers who scanned the brains of sleeping
subjects found that the brain areas involved in learning new
tasks show activity during sleep. Scientists believe that
sleep is critical to storing information for further retrieval. It
may be that all we learn throughout the day is "processed"
at night so we remember it later!

What was Fuzzy Wuzzy soap?

Believe it or not, there was a fuzzy soap on the market in
the US in the 1960s. Called "Fuzzy Wuzzy Bath Soap" and
shaped like a bear, it was supposed to grow "fur" as it dried!
(Unfortunately, this process took several days and the soap
was supposed to be left in the dark.) Inside the center of the
soap was a plastic bear toy - probably intended to keep kids
using the soap even after it was furry. What was the "fur"?
No one seems to know for sure, though most people who
used it suggest it was a (hopefully non-toxic) mold of
some sort.

From eMarketers Daily

Can Spam Stop Legitimate E-Mail Marketers?
19 March 2004
According to the Pew Internet & American Life Project,
53% of Internet users in the US say they have seen no
change in the volume of spam they have receive since
1 January -- the inception of the CAN-SPAM act.

Only 20% say they have seen less spam in their personal
e-mail accounts and 11% have seen less in their work
e-mail accounts.

Pew surveyed 2,204 people in the US, 1,371 of whom
were Internet users, between 3 February and 1 March.

The flood of spam e-mail messages does not seem to be
subsiding. Jupiter Research estimates that the average
online consumer received 3,920 spam messages in
2003 and will receive an average 6,395 by 2008.
Nonetheless, e-mail marketing spending will rise from
just over $2 billion last year to just over $6 billion in 2008.

Jupiter explains that spam is not necessarily the issue
for legitimate e-mail marketers, the issue is the volume
of other legitimate e-mail marketing messages. Indeed
as distribution is more targeted and more testing occurs
in the field, e-mail marketers are likely to find greater
challenges -- but also greater rewards -- with the
ad vehicle.

------------------

Canadiansí Reaction to Spam
19 March 2004
Ipsos-Reid, in conjunction with Forge Marketing, finds
Canadian Internet users receive an average 6,968 spam
e-mail messages per year.

Looking at just one week, Ipsos determined that 17% of
Internet users in Canada receive 10 or more spam
e-mail messages per week, while 10% say they get
between 51 and 100 spam messages.

Ipsos bases its findings on Internet surveys conducted
with 1,000 Canadian Internet users, and telephone surveys
conducted among 1,000 Canadian adults to verify the
online findings. Both surveys were conducted in the
beginning of January 2004. Though most Canadians
do not open spam, a notable one-third told the research
companies they had opened a spam in the past week
before the surveys were conducted (thus proving the
existence of spam). Interestingly, most respondents who
have opened spam-- 60% -- did not say they were tricked
into opening it, but rather that they were curious about
the messages. A strong 37% say they opened spam
because they wanted to know more about the product
or service.

Though most Canadians are very annoyed with spam,
according to a recent Prophis Research study, their level
of annoyance -- 4.5 out of five -- is not as high as how
annoying they find telemarketing, rated at 4.6 out of five.

COMPUTER TIPS - - -
-------------------------

Disks

There are only two classes of disks -- The magnetic
type, and the optical type. CD-ROM disks are optical
disks. CD-ROMs hold at least 650 megabyte's worth
of data. That's about 650 million characters.

Magnetic Disks are floppy disks.  They hold just over
1 megabyte of data--that's 1.44 megs, to be exact.
And part of that space is taken up with a little directory
information, so you'll really only have about 1.38 megs
available for actual file storage. Floppies are good for
storing articles, reports, and other items that are
relatively small in size. There was a time when
diskettes were the primary method of distributing
software. Then came the CD-ROM, and the
diskette became nearly obsolete.

Optical disks store a tremendous amount of data. But
they require special hardware called a CD Writer. It's
a lot like a CD player, except you can actually create
your own CDs--both data and music. A data CD won't
do anything in your stereo CD player. But your music
CD will work just fine in your computer's CD player.
CD writers can also play your CDs. They're a dual
purpose machine, and they usually work extremely
well. If you want flexibility, consider installing a
second CD writer along with your CD player. That
way, you can copy direct from one CD to another.

Since floppies don't hold much, along came a
company named Iomega and developed what is now
the most popular format on the market--the Zip drive
and its associated Zip disk. They hold 100 megabytes,
and now there's a 250 megabyte version.

Health Question About Tinnitus
PART 1 of 4

My name is Nancy and of course like many others I've been to my
GP and ENT for any kind of help for what I believe I have and is
Tinnitus. So with that said I'm hoping to find information
leading to a program that can be of help in at least giving me
some kind of relief for the constant ringing. My doctors admit
to knowing next to zero for any type of relief for Tinnitus but
I was hoping for out of the box type of program and came upon
your site, and now would welcome any and all info that would
lead me to some kind of positive information to try to lead me
in a self help program. Thank-you so much in advance.
Hi Nancy, thanks for visiting out site at
http://www.menieres-disease.ca/tinnitus.htm

As you already are experiencing, tinnitus is a noise, a ringing,
or a roaring sound in the affected ear. It is very disturbing
and sometimes actually causes pain. It is certainly very
uncomfortable. It may be described as the sound of escaping air,
running water, the inside of a seashell, or as a sizzling,
musical, buzzing, or humming noise. The "perceived" sounds
include ringing noises, blowing sounds, hissing, whistling, high
or low pitched sounds, roaring, pulsating sounds, and others.

A mild form of tinnitus is common. Many people hear noises for
several seconds or even minutes. However, persistent tinnitus
sometimes accompanies sensory hearing loss. Tinnitus may
interfere with the ability to concentrate or sleep and may cause
(understandable) psychological distress.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.

Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.

The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.

The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Wow! Don't you look new all over. Pretty snazzy young
man, pretty snazzy." said Sam.

"Thank you for these. They are exactly the ones I like. How
did you know?" asked Billy, "Oh, I won't ask. I want to get
rid of these clothes. They come with the smell and odor of
a former life. Can I throw them into the garbage?"

Within a flash of an eye the clothes disappeared from his
hands. He could hardly believe it.

"They're gone Billy. Now you can start life
anew." said Alewka.

Billy blinked, and looked at his hand again. The clothes
were gone.

"Good morning!" said a sleepy voice from behind.

Tim and Tom had come down from their bedrooms and
headed for the fridge.

"Good morning. You guys sleep well?" asked Sam.

"I think I'll go up and change." said Alewka.

She got up from the table and went upstairs.

"Billy!" came the call from up the stairs.

Billy got up and ran up the stairs thinking something
was wrong.

"Yes!" he said as he reached the top of the stairs.

Alewka was standing at his bedroom door.

"You've done well! I'm impressed. I like the way you are
putting in the effort Billy, thank you. May I show you how
to make a bed?" she asked.

"Yeah! Sure!" Billy answered.

The bed that Billy made had all sorts of wrinkles all over
it. He more or less just pulled the covers up and thought
that was a made bed.

Alewka went over and pulled the covers down, stretched
the bottom sheet flat, then pulled up the top sheet, ensuring
it was flat, then pulled up the next blanket and the top
bedspread. When she was done, the pillow had been
fluffed, placed on the bed and the bedspread brought over
it, leaving the bed looking neat, clean and tidy, without a
wrinkle to be seen.

"How's that?" she asked.

Billy laughed, "A lot better than mine." he said.

"Well, if you are going to learn all these things, Billy, you
might as well learn them the right way to start with." Alewka
leaned over and gave him a kiss on the cheek, "Thanks for
your efforts to learn these things Billy."

Alewka went to her bedroom to change.

Billy just stood there for a minute, then he brought his hand
up to his cheek, where he had just been kissed. That had not
ever happened to him before, ever. It brought fluid to his eyes.

He turned and went downstairs and again sat where he
had been having a coffee with Mr. Henry.

"So what are you boys up to today?" asked Sam of the
three of them.

"Well Dad, if Billy is up to it, I haven't seen Sonora for a long
time and I thought it might be nice to see her for an hour or
so." said Tim, "If Billy wants to come, I thought that would be nice."

"You'll have to do that soon if you're going. It'll be getting
dark over there pretty quick." said Sam.

"Yeah, I know." said Tim.

"Billy, Tom and I have a friend, Sonora. She lives in Africa. I
haven't seen her for a while and I thought we might go visit
her today. Would you like to come?" asked Tim.

"Sure, but how are we going to get there?" asked Billy,
knowing something was up. He had never travelled before,
so this would be interesting, but how were they going to
do it?

"You leave that to me, but if you're set, we'll do that. Do you
want anything to eat before we go? We'll be away for nearly
three hours." said Tim.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!

"When things come to the worse, they generally mend."
---- Susanna Moodie

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

HA! HA! HA!

Mother Teresa died and went to heaven.

God greets her at the Pearly Gates."Are you hungry,
Mother Teresa?" says God.

"I could eat," Mother Teresa replies.

So God opens a can of tuna and reaches for a chunk
of rye bread and they share it.

While eating this humble meal, Mother Teresa looks
down into Hell and sees the inhabitants devouring
huge steaks, lobsters, pheasants, pastries and wines.
Curious, but deeply trusting, she remains quiet.

The next day God again invites her to join Him for
a meal.

Again, it is tuna and rye bread.

Once again, Mother Teresa can see the denizens of
Hell enjoying caviar, champagne, lamb, truffles and
chocolates.

Still she says nothing.

The following day, mealtime arrives and another can
of tuna is opened.

She can't contain herself any longer. Meekly, she says:
"God, I am grateful to be in heaven with You as a reward
for the pious, obedient life I led. But here in heaven all
I get to eat is tuna and a piece of rye bread, and in the
Other Place they eat like emperors and kings! I just
don't understand."

God sighs. "Let's be honest," He says. "For just two
people, does it pay to cook?"
