TODAY'S TRIVIA - - -
-----------------------
Why do squirrels sometimes PRETEND to bury nuts?
How long do squirrels live?
What do city squirrels eat?
--------------
ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is a "horse opera"?
A "horse opera" is a film or other theatrical work about
life in the American West during the early "pioneering" years.
Basically, it's another term for a "Western."
How do squirrels remember where they buried their nuts?
Most of the time, they don't. Squirrels really do work hard to
hide and bury nuts and each may bury thousands of them
per year. Unfortunately, their memories are about as good
as this writer's memory and they forget what they buried
twenty minutes after hiding it. The nuts they DO find later on
are generally not their own and are located through their
excellent sense of smell.

PREVENTING BURNOUT
by Rhoberta Shaler, PhD
We get burned when we stay too close to the heat source
for too long. Wise folks move away before they get burned,
but, some are so focused on other things that they fail to
feel the heat! When the heat finally gets their attention,
they can barely crawl away to safety. They suffer from
burnout.
Too much, too little, too late, too long. Those are what
define 'burnout'.
TOO MUCH
You do and you do and you do. You are the one who
can be counted on to stay late, come in early, skip lunch
and pick up the pieces when others let them fall. In fact,
people begin to count on you to do just that! This is a
recipe for burnout.
You've read in my other articles that you are one-hundred
percent responsible for teaching people how to treat you.
Have you taught them to treat you like the safety plug?
Oh, and you thought that 'indispensable' was a sure-fire
strategy for promotion? Wrong. It is a strategy for burnout.
You thought that going the extra mile was just good
exercise. It's exhausting done daily. Save it for times
when you will be appreciated, not taken for granted.
TOO LITTLE
I was working with a coaching client recently and she
said, "I've given my life to this company and my reward
is a pink slip." Oops! Mistake. She only has one life and
she needs to keep it for herself. Work is only a part
of life and it must be kept within the confines of values
and goals.
I don't know one person who has consciously set the
goal to be the first in the company to experience burnout.
Yet, paying too little attention to maintaining healthy
balance is the equivalent. Any good manager wants you
to be living a balanced life. Why? So that when a little
extra is required, it's available. If you're running as fast
as you can every day, you have nothing left for an
occasional sprint to a deadline.
TOO LATE
Sometimes you don't realize all that you are giving until
it's too late!
The greatest weapon you have against burnout is a
simple one. Gently pucker your lips, open your mouth
and speak that self-saving word. Whether it's work-related,
family-related or expectation-driven, you have to learn
to say 'NO!' before it is too late. You cannot be all things
to all people all the time.
Practice on small things. If a person asks you to go
somewhere that you do not want to go, thank them for
wanting to do something that includes you and
say, 'NO!". If you haven't tried this, it takes a little
practice...and no one has ever died from doing it. Just
practice. It gets easier. Remember, too, that you never
need to give a reason or an excuse. A simple 'NO,
THANKS!" is all that is required....with a smile.
TOO LONG
The body and mind are resilient and forgiving....to a
point! You can push on through a whole night's work
and recover quite quickly in a day or two of rest. No
problem. Burnout occurs when pushing becomes a
lifestyle. Do more. Be more. Have more. Rescue more.
Work more. Accommodate more. Push, push, push. The
body simply cannot handle the demand and the fuses
blow.
A medical dictionary says that burnout is "An excessive
stress reaction to one's occupational or professional
environment. It is manifested by feelings of emotional
and physical exhaustion coupled with a sense of
frustration and failure." Those feelings come from
the blown fuses.
Physically, you can go into seeming meltdown. Your
adrenals are distressed. Your skin is rebelling. Your
stomach produces excess acid. Your sleep is
disturbed. Everything is stressed beyond reason
and all you want to do is crawl in a hole and pull the
hole in after you for a long, long rest.
GOOD NEWS! You can avoid all this. It's a choice.
So, if you recognize a too much, too little, too late,
too long kind of build-up in yourself. STOP!
Choose health instead.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -
Health Question About Tinnitus
PART 3 of 4
But the body has a great alarm system called the inflammatory
process. And this alarm system will try to overpower the
intruder. It does this by bringing extra fluid to the area,
which contains all sorts of good things, including the actual
fluid to wash away the "problem" and special cells to eat it
away. So one possibility is a virus. If it's that, it should
disappear after a while. There isn't much to be done. Sometimes
doctors will prescribe antibiotics after a length of time has
passed. Next it could be a bacteria or infection. Again you
could get an antibiotic but if it persists, you'll know it's not
that. How about chemicals? Did you know that many drugs have
tinnitus as a side effect? That means this ringing is produced
by a chemical being released into your body. But what if you
don't take any drugs.how about other chemicals? You are
surrounded by chemicals all day long. And frequently, you get
them on your skin, into your nasal passages, into your eyes, or
through your mouth as you breathe and just "live". These are all
ways for it to enter your body.
How would this affect the hearing nerve to get the ringing? That
would be a reaction of the nerve to this fluid. I want you to
picture a field of grass under water. This water is creating a
lot of pressure per square inch. So the more water, the more
pressure. Do you think the pressure could block the nerve? And
could this block or pressure distort the signals bound for the
brain? Yes. Could it follow that the more chemicals would create
more pressure? So your job now is to really pay attention to
your body's exposure to chemicals...unless you take any drugs.
Then check those out first. Ask your pharmacist or go online and
type "drugs that cause tinnitus" into Google.com. The results
will surprise you! If you don't take any drugs, check your blood
pressure. Sometimes high blood pressure does this to people.
Then explore all sorts of chemicals in your home. From bathroom
and shower cleaners to things kept in the basement, garage, or
attic. And check your what you put on your lawn.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began, and
David Wylie, age 20, were selected, by a
stranger in town, to take a dangerous trip, together.
The idea was that each was to take only the clothes
on their back, and go anywhere in the world where
the stranger took them. They were to be left there
to find their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they were.
Upon their safe return there was a million dollars
waiting in their bank account for them. If one did not
make it that money would go to the survivor. If neither
made it the money would go to their families.
The story deals with their adventures along the way
and leads into the only way they could survive. That was
for Eloise to learn higher law and commit her life to
that end. Along the way she learns how to perform
many a miracle.
The story leads to many friends, many adventures
and many places. As you read on, enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

Tim laughed. "Yes, Billy. Sonora is one of 'us guys'."
Sonora laughed too, as did Hemno.
Little Hemno, now twelve was progressing rapidly in the
knowledge. He was able to see more clearly what others
were speaking about. He trusted, and understood the law.
Tim could see how Hemno had progressed. He was
impressed. The young man was doing very well under
Sonora's tutelage.
With all the conversation, everyone interested in the
catching up, and being engrossed in all that was going
on the time passed as if it were minutes. Yet they had sat
near the cooking fire for over four hours. Such is the
way when one is involved.
"Well, folks! I think it is time we left for home. Thank you
for your hospitality." said Tim, finally.
"Oh! Please stay a while longer. We get to see you so
little." said Kenyata.
"I know Kenyata, thank you. We will see you at
Romano's and Oomano's wedding." answered Tim.
The three boys rose to leave. Billy walked over to
Mombudo and to Kenyata. Shaking each of their hands,
he said, "Thank you very much for this wonderful evening.
I have enjoyed myself, just listening to all of you talk.
This is a wonderful place to live. Thank you for having me."
He walked over to Sonora and shook her hand, thanking
her, and then he took Hemno's hand, "Nice to meet you,
little buddy. We will meet again, I am sure, and you will
have to show me the animals on the plains. Is that a deal?"
"That's a deal, Mr. Billy." answered Hemno.
Billy smiled. All this day he had been treated with a
respect he had not formerly experienced. He liked it. He
liked it to a point where he wanted more of it.
He took Tim's hand and in the flash of an eye they were
back in the Henry kitchen. The time was approaching the
supper hour, yet there was still plenty of light left in the day.
"Wow! How did we do that? That was fantastic. We traveled
half way around the world, in an instant. That was a terrific
visit. Those are nice people and what a place to live. What
scenery, What a view, what a place to live." Billy said. He
was that excited he began repeating himself.
Billy had never been away for any trip, let alone being off
the continent. He could hardly believe what had just
happened. In that it was now over, it was almost like a
dream, except his shirt was still wet and he still felt the heat.
"We only traveled as those who live by higher law travel,
Billy. Don't be too impressed by it. Accept it as the norm.
As you get on with your day and accept these things, it
brings you closer to doing them yourself. No one here will
force you to learn, that is your choice, but you will see
much of this and you might as well come to
accept it." said Tim.
"Billy, you will meet others who are well able to do these
things. You will soon see it is not an isolated incident.
You will get used to it." said Tom.
"You guys talk as if it happens every day." said Billy.
"In one way or another it does." said Tom.
"Hi guys!" said Alewka as she came in from the attached
garage. "Your Dad and I are out doing a bit of yard work.
Come out and give us a hand. We have a bunch of
grass that needs hauling away."
"Hi Mom. Sure." was the boys answer in unison. Billy
went too. This was a different family. He liked it here.
The boys went out and made short work of the grass.
Sam was helping Alewka plant some spring bulbs.
Susan Miles had come over and was talking with
them as they worked.
The boys introduced Billy to Susan. "Mrs. Miles, this is
Billy Hendricks. He is going to be staying with us for a
while, maybe a long while. Billy this is our next door
neighbor, Mrs. Miles." said Tim, pointing to Susan's
house.
"Hello Billy. I happy to meet you. I'll bet you have already
found out what a crazy family this is. You are likely to see
anything in this household, but don't let it worry you. They
have been my neighbors for thirty years and I love them
dearly. They are real good folk. I hope you stay for a very
long time." said Susan as she held out her hand in
welcome.
