Where do we get the word "sleuth" from?

--------------
Where did the term "private eye" originate?
We get "private eye" from the famous logo of the Pinkerton
Detective Agency: a wide-open eye. The company, founded
in the 1800s, had as its motto: "We never sleep."
What famous contemporary mystery writer was jailed
for murder?
Anne Perry, a popular mystery author, was convicted as a
teenager of helping her best friend to bludgeon to death her
best friend's mother. The case was made into a 1994 movie,
Heavenly Creatures, starring Kate Winslet as the young
Juliet Hulmes (Anne's real name). Hey, they say "write
what you know."

How to Do Hard Things
by Suzanne Falter-Barns
One of the harsh little realities of pursuing a dream is that
sooner or later, you're going to have to do some stuff you don't
like very much. It's just plain inevitable. Enter
procrastination. Dread. Meltdown. Complete inertia.
But the prospect of doing the tough stuff doesn't have to stop
you cold. To that end, I've been teasing out some different ways
you can keep going. Here are a few of my favorites:
* Play music. I learned this when I started running, or
'jogging' as we called it back in the 70's. Clamping on the
headphones made it go so much better. Even today, as I pound the
treadmill, it's just so much easier if I've got country music
videos playing along while I work out.
In fact, I recently saw a movie in which a soldier talks about
overcoming his fear and going into battle by listening to heavy
metal music piped into his helmet. Neurosurgeons, emergency room
docs, and others in high-pressure operating theaters often play
lightly upbeat, soothing music to keep stress under control as
they work.
* 'Bookend it'. This is a phrase the 12-steppers wisely use for
calling up a supportive friend before AND after a tough task
just so you're accountable out there to someone. Use the phone
or email and make that connection. You'll be less likely to
procrastinate your way out of it.
* Delegate. Got a task you just can't somehow do? I always have
three or four lurking around the edges of my desk, until the day
I rise up and give it away. Hire a local teenager, elderly
person who wouldn't mind a little light work, a family member,
or even a local odd-jobs person to come in one day and give you
a hand with all or your 'hard stuff.' If the problem seems to be
on-going, hire a Virtual Assistant, from one of the on-line
sources like AssistU.com. This is a person you hire on an
hourly basis, usually in some other part of the country, who
helps you electronically with all kinds of administrative needs.
If you can't afford to find help, buddy up with a friend and
offer to do each other's 'hard stuff' in an even swap.
* Plan a big, juicy reward. We're talking one you seriously want
and the nastier the task, the bigger the reward. If you must,
combine this with book-ending, to make sure you not only do the
task, but reward yourself as well.
* Dare yourself to not do it. Really imagine life without this
particular task completed. Then see what the consequences are.
Truly dire? If not, maybe you can actually drop the hard thing
from your to-do list. On the other hand, will you be
disappointed? Will things just not seem right somehow? Better
use that image of disappointment to move your dream along.
* Jump in, first thing. We tend to be fresher, and less
conflicted, stressed or distracted first thing in the morning
(post-coffee, of course.) That's the best time to seriously
seize the day and do the hard thing. Success manuals all preach
doing it first, and they're right. It works.
* Envision the goal. Is it 1000 new subscribers to your ezine?
Is it a potential big sale that will change your business, or
leaving a job that will help you live your dream? Make a little
note and park it somewhere that's frequently in your line of
site, such as a Post It on your computer screen. (You can word
it obscurely to protect your privacy in an open office
environment.) By keeping you attention on the big picture,
you'll naturally get less hung up on the day-to-day small
stuff.
* Impose a temporary goal. One of my dreaded tasks is
vocalizing, or exercising my vocal cords every day in an effort
to keep my singing voice in shape. Just about the only motivator
I've found that works is always having a small përformance just
ahead
especially in times when I'm working on a long-term
project that doesn't 'need' my voice anytime soon. Knowing I
have to perform, even at a dinner party, keeps me interested in
staying in shape. Same would apply if you want to work out on a
regular basis. Find a charity fun run or walkathon you can get
yourself in shape for.
That should give you some fodder for facing the harsh realities
of life, and getting on with those annoyingly procrastinated
to-do's. Feng Shui experts insist this 'mental clutter' keeps us
small and inefficient; once we actually go through the hard
stuff, and clear out our anxiety and procrastination, we thrive.
And guess what? They're absolutely right!
TRY THIS
Create a better to-do list
One of my little projects for the summer was to tame my unruly,
wildly unreliable to-do list. Somehow it spilled out of my date
book, spewing Post-Its all over my desk and computer, with
another undocumented stack of tasks always clogging up my inbox.
What to do?
First I read David Allen's book, Getting Things Done, and a
little light bulb went off in my head. Allen suggests organizing
tasks by the location where you do them. So you maintain lists
like 'At Computer', 'Errands', 'Office Time' and 'Calls to
Make'. That's easy and efficient. Allen then has several
suggestions on where to keep these lists.
I choose the Tasks function of Outlook, on my computer, and boy
is that terrific! Every day when I turn on my email, there's my
task list staring me in my face. Productivity experts note that
a graphic portrayal of tasks is actually helpful in
understanding, and being motivated by them. Some are done, some
are undone
and I can divide them into location lists, chëck
lists, a timeline, or any kind of list I want at the click of a
button.
Not only that, the computer actually gets me to put a time frame
on all tasks (if I want) and then reminds me when the deadline
is near or past.
This is just the kind of office structure a meandering, creative
mind like mine (and yours?) needs to keep focused and on track.

Bones: Dont Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 1 of 9
Lately I have been getting some interesting questions
and comments about bones. It is easy to see how bones
can be misused if you dont really understand their
purpose. The idea seems to be that no matter how you
live, your bones, at least, will always be there to
support you. I dont agree. Bones are like any other
living cells: they have their own functions to perform,
plus specific or specialized tasks. It helps to see
yourself as one gigantic cell, with many, many
different specialized components. Nurture each
component, and you are one happy, healthy person. The
good thing is that there are only a few things that
constitute good nurturing and those are the same for
all components, including all the specialized parts.
Your body converts what it needs. You simply give it
the good basics. I want to explain a little about
normal bones and their functions. Then outline how they
thrive, and how they can be damaged. Because we expect
our bodies will always heal, I will mention things to
encourage that healing. As always, this is a general
discussion on how your bones help you live. It not
meant to be taken as any sort of medical advice.
It is fun to imagine what would happen if you didnt
have any framework to house your body parts! (Picture a
tent without framework or inner poles!)Your brain would
be wobbling and maybe rolling off your eyes
one or
both! Would your neck still sitting near the top end of
your chest...or could it have slipped to the side?
Whats holding you up if you dont have any bones in
your legs? And where would your kidneys be floating?
Lets not even think about bladder or bowel control!
Seriously, all parts of your body are interdependent.
No matter how small a part you may loose or damage, the
damage reverberates throughout your entire body.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

From out of the light stepped Riata, Oomano's
sister.
There was great joy as the sisters embraced.
Riata also embraced Romano as a long lost friend.
Then she turned to Juanita. "Welcome, Juanita. It
is good to have you among us." She embraced
Juanita.
This is the first time Juanita had met Riata,
yet Riata knew her name. Then Juanita realized she
knew all about Riata. She knew Riata was the one
who started the orphanage downtown, that is now a
shrine where crowds still gather everyday to be
healed. She knew Riata had been shot and then
ascended above the crowd, as her friends tended to
her wounds. She knew all about the orphanage
downtown, even though she had never been there.
Then she knew, too, of the orphanage in China from
which Riata had just arrived. She knew all about
what was happening, including about Amenti, Reno
and Maria, folks who went there from here, Matto
Grosso. Juanita was in awe of higher law and her
Maker.
Somehow little Marietta knew her Aunt Riata
was here. She came running into the house and
immediately jumped into Riata's arms.
The house was filled with joy, and much
animated happiness.
"My little one, you must not go near hot
stoves when no one is with you. Have you learned
your lesson on that?"
"Yes, Aunty. But Juanita took care of me. All
is well."
The faith, understanding and belief that
resounded within the child's voice was rock solid.
It had never occurred to her other things might
have happened. She simply believed. That ended it.
"If all men could have the faith of a child
this world would be a better place. Look at this
child. Even now she believes. Yes, I know she
lives with the teachings every day, yet in her
mind there is no doubt. This is the way of things
and she had never even thought of nor permits any
other outcome. Oh, for the faith of little
children." Riata was always amazed at the never
questioned faith of children. Each was of their
Maker.
"Hey you guys! It is past lunch time and none
of us have eaten. Anybody hungry?" Oomano became
conscious of a hunger gnawing at her stomach.
All agreed they could use something to eat,
and Oomano without effort caused a sandwich lunch
to be placed on the table. All ate and drank as
they shared stories of where they had been and
what they had done.
It took nearly two hours but within that time
they were all brought up to date with what had
happened to all of them.
Riata had not yet gone to visit her folks, so
the party all decided to walk over there. It was
about five or six blocks and they could have
simply appeared there, but the day was warm,
bright sunshine and they decided the walk would be
good.
Miguele and Abetta were overjoyed to see them.
They had not seen Riata for many months and even
though they both lived by higher law they
continued their life long habits of staying around
the house.
Miguele was thrilled with Juanita having
crossed the veil. "You have come from the same
place as Romano. Did he ever tell you he shot me
and left me for dead? Had it not been for a friend
of ours I would have died. Then this friend began
to speak to Romano and he made the choice to look
at higher law. In much the same way as you he
learned. I am glad. He is a fine man. It is good
to have you among us Juanita. You will do well in
the work."
Juanita had been visiting here many times
before and had always been made welcome. Yet today
that welcome was warmer and deeper than she had
ever felt. She knew the difference was within her,
not that she was treated differently. It was just
because she could now see it differently.
Then there was another surprise. In the midst
of them there suddenly appeared four others.
Eloise, Mazunta and the two children stopped on
for a visit.
The joy was overwhelming. Juanita knew
immediately who they were, even though she had not
met them nor heard of them before. Her growth in
higher law was happening fast.
Eloise came over to her and hugged her,
"Welcome Juanita. It is good to have you among
us."
Then Mazunta did the same. He was a towering
man over Juanita. He bent down, put his arms
around her then stood up, holding her off the
floor. "Welcome, Juanita." Then he put her back
down. There was laughter all through the room.
The kids went outside to play. They all knew
where the toys were.

HA! HA! HA!
My four-year-old likes to say the blessing at mealtimes, usually
repeating the same short prayer: "Thank you, God, for this
gracious food. Amen."
One evening, however, he thanked the Lord for the birds, the
trees, each of his friends, and asked God to watch over his
family and help them to be good. I was thrilled that he was
finally praying from the heart.
But after the "Amen," he took a spoonful of stew, gasped,
then dropped his spoon into the bowl. "I should have said
a longer prayer," he said. "My food is still too hot."
