What Greek demigod gave us the word "panic"?
Pan, a Greek nature god with a fondness for darting out from
bushes and frightening mortals, gave us the word "panic."
What mythological character inspired the word "tantalize"?
Tantalus was a king who committed one of the vilest acts
imaginable -- serving the body of this own son to the gods
for dinner. He was punished by being sent to the land of the
dead, Hades, where he must forever stand in a pool of cool
water with luscious fruit hanging over his head. Every time
he tries to seize a fruit, they sway out of his reach, and when
he bends down to drink, the water sinks so low he can't
reach it. Hence, Tantalus is forever "tantalized.

Here's To Think On
with Ken Darby
-----------------
What's Your Level Of Interest?
"Recently we got a call from that big white church at
11th and Walnut," the paramedic said.
"A frantic usher was very concerned that during the
sermon an elderly man passed out in a pew and
appeared to be dead.
The usher could find no pulse and there was no
noticeable breathing."
"What was so unusual and demanding about this
particular call?" the interviewer asked.
"Well," the paramedic said, "we carried out four guys
before we found the one who was dead."
Maybe this is an exaggerated example. Yet even I have
sat in church and nodded off. Then I decided not to go
any longer. My level of interest was no longer being
satisfied. I had to get more fulfillment from religion.
Fortunately, for me, religion didn't and doesn't offer it.
But how about you? Do you continue to do things in which
you no longer have a real and genuine interest? Why?
Life is too short and offers far too many things to do for
you to continue to do things that interest you no longer.
What are you trying to do, impress someone? Don't you
think they know you aren't interested?
One of life's lessons for all of us is that what you wear in
your heart you also wear on your sleeve. People know if
you are genuinely interested or just pretending.
If yo would succeed, if you would do well in a group, if
you would enjoy life, then confine your activities to the
things that hold your interest. It is those things that will
eventually have meaning for you and which will work out
for you. Don't pretend. Don't make out like you are
interested when you are not. It damages your self image.

Bones: Dont Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 5 of 9
All or any of these problems translate into the loss or
continuity of functions: the local functions of
reproduction, nourishment, and waste management in the
actual cell plus the systemic (general) functions of
blood cell formation and mineral storage. The amount of
damage will depend on the severity of the
interruption. There are some chronic conditions that
do not become apparent for quite a while. Osteoporosis
and Pagets disease are two of these. Both have to do
with leaching of nutrients. Paget's disease is a
metabolic bone disease that involves bone destruction.
When the subsequent re-growth happens, it results in
bone deformity. Osteoporosis is the result of calcium
deficiency or loss. And if you recall, one major
assignment of bones is to be the storage facility of
minerals including calcium and phosphorous.
I want to add a word about CARTILAGE and joint stress.
Cartilage is a soft but very strong tissue. It is the
protective layer that cushions the joint and acts as a
shock absorber. It also lubricates the joints naturally
with an element called glucosamine. This is called a
building block because allows the body to manufacture
its own synovial fluid or lubricant. And it secretes
this lubricant each time the joint is gently moved.
Where does this building block come from? Nutrients in
your diet. So a normal action of walking will produce a
certain predetermined amount of lubrication. Your joint
moves comfortably and easily. However once the body
creates a need for more than the normally-required
mount and the building block is not keeping up with the
demand, problems can happen. And the obvious one is the
deterioration of the padding. Over time and usage the
cartilage in your joints is gradually worn down. Your
body rebuilds the cartilage as it becomes worn. It also
replaces the shock-absorbing synovial fluid naturally
and routinely, but it requires glucosamine. Thus the
joints are always protected until it no longer has
access to the nutrients or the demand outstrips the
supply. Remember too that healing requires adequate
blood supply. Damage to the area will decrease the
flow. Cartilage is slow to rebuild itself. And if
ingredients (building blocks) used for cartilage repair
are in short supply, the recovery can be even slower.
Something has to change for healing to occur.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

----------------------------------------
Jill talked a blue streak all the way over to
the coffee counter. Eloise hardly heard a word she
said because her speech was incoherent, jumping
from one topic to another.
Finally they found a booth in which to sit,
Eloise taking one side and Jill the other.
Looking at the two women one could find a huge
contrast between them. Eloise was calm and had
that appearance of serenity that made one think of
her as a very strong woman. She had an even all
over tan that comes from nature and not a tanning
studio, and she projected an air of maturity that
excelled any around her.
Jill, by comparison, had that pale pallor of
one who nearly hibernates in the winter. It comes
from very little time outside, working and living
indoors as so many do. Jill was a nervous woman,
which accounts for the reason she doesn't stay on
one topic for very long. Around Eloise she was
very nervous, in spite of the intense feeling of
love Eloise was sending onto her.
Yet, slowly, Jill was succumbing to the love
that Eloise broadcast. After ordering their
beverages she showed signs of settling down.
"How are you? Gosh, you look good. Where did
you get your tan? What have you been up to? How
come we don't see you around town? Gee it's good
to see you."
"Jill. Slow down. I can only answer one
question at a time. It's good to see you too! To
answer all your questions, I now live in South
America with my husband and two children Maz, now
6 and AliAnn, now 4. I met my husband when I was
away on that journey you all know about. He is a
fine man and leader of the village where we live.
I think that pretty much covers your questions,
now how are you? What are you up to, and what is
the old gang doing?"
"Geeeeee! You live in South America. No wonder
we never see you around here. You're married and
have kids. You've been busy. Some of the old gang
are married and some have children. I don't see
them much any more, what with work and all."
"How about you? Are you married? Family?"
"No, I'm not married, not even going out with
someone. I haven't found my man yet."
Eloise decided she would look in on Jill's
thoughts to find out what was happening. She found
Jill to be hyper nervous. She always chased
suiters away with her nervous talking, and
whenever she did get to go out with a man she
would end up knocking things on the floor,
spilling things and generally coming off as a real
dunce. That was almost what she was doing here,
and would have had Eloise not been broadcasting
love unto her.
Jill's home life as a child had done that.
Both her parents were the critical type and Jill
constantly heard "What are you, stupid?" or "Can't
you do anything right?" or "Here, get out of
there. Let me do it. You can't get anything right
can you?"
After years of that, starting before she
gained full consciousness as a child, Jill
actually became convinced she was a nobody. Any
time someone began to show her she was worthy of
attention, her self image would kick in and begin
to prove them wrong. She knew, after all, who she
was. She had become convinced of that for her
entire life.
Jill's parents were social climbers. They were
more concerned about their social status than
about Jill, she was more of an embarrassment to
them than a source of pride. In their own
stupidity they failed to realize they alone
created this child the way she now is. They
trained her to be the clutz she is.
The same happens in all families. The children
are a direct result of the parent's teaching. It
is the parent's exclusive domain to decide what
kind of a child they will raise. The child knows
nothing other than it is hungry, when it is first
born. All else is taught to it by the parent,
everything.
Eloise felt sorry for Jill. Yet she also knew
that each of us is on a journey of our own. We are
here to learn the lessons needed in this lifetime.
This was Jill's course. She was now in control and
could, like all men and women, make choices that
would change the way she reacted to things. Fear
was in control of Jill now, today. She had some
hard choices ahead if she was to lead a normal
life.
"I bought myself a house and I live alone. It
isn't far from your folks home actually, maybe
three or four blocks."
"That's nice, Jill. Have you ever thought of
taking some courses on self image training?"
"No! What do you mean?"

TODAY'S REPORT:
Another gorgeous day. I heard the first goose of the season
fly past this morning. That means we are within a month of
the ice going out on the lake. For those of you who don't
know, I live on a lake. Our house is 60 feet away from the
water. It is paradise and we rarely leave it. We go away on
a holiday and when we get back we wonder why we left
such beauty.

THINK ABOUT THIS TODAY!
"The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready
for his opportunity when it comes."
---- Benjamin Disraeli
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
HA! HA! HA!
The rabbi of a very poor temple was trying to figure out
why his congregation was so poor and the Roman
Catholic church down the block was so well off. Then,
in comes his son.
The rabbi decides to send his son to the RC church
on Sunday on the chance that he could get some idea
how they collected so much money.
The son comes back and says "It's easy pop! There is
a guy in special robes on the stage in the front of the
church, and he turns to the audience and hollers 'I bet
I can beat you in a game of dominos.' Then a
guy in the balcony answers 'I bet you I can beat YOU
in a game of dominos.'"
The rabbi asks "so, what do they do then?"
The boy says "then a bunch of fellows go up and
down the aisles collecting the bets in baskets!"
