What bad thing can happen if you're bitten by a vampire bat?

How does a horny toad defend itself?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

Who was the only bachelor to serve as US president?

James Buchanan, the 15th US president, was the only
one to hold office while a bachelor.

Do vampire bats really suck the blood of humans?

Vampire bats prefer horses, cows, and pigs. But if they're
hungry, these tiny bats will drink human blood. They don't
suck the blood, though, they lap it. A special anticoagulant
chemical in their saliva keeps the blood of their prey flowing.

Digital Photography For The Masses
by Brock Levinson

Just a few short years ago digital photography was only
accessible to those willing to pay the rather high entry
fee required for purchasing a then expensive entry level
digital camera. Advances in hardware have, as they
always seem to do, bring the concepts and technology
of digital photography closer to earth and now even
those on a modest income will find the entry point into
the world of digital photography to be more reasonable.
This, coupled with the fact that digital imaging software
has also become available that is not only a lot easier to
use but also much more affordable (The reigning
professional package, Adobe Photoshop, comes with a
steep learning curve and a hefty price tag, but consumer
grade digital imaging software from Adobe, Microsoft
and others has bridged the gap between enthusiast skill
sets and professional results).

Also boosting the ease of use and learning curve for
newcomers to the digital photography scene is
functionality built into modern operating systems that
makes managing digital photos and dealing with digital
cameras and imaging hardware a snap. The latest
offerings from Microsoft, Apple and even the open
source community's Linux product include numerous
features designed to aid the digital imaging enthusiast
(and professionals, for that matter) to deal with their
images and cameras.

Microsoft?s Windows XP product, for example, has the
ability to display and sort photos by the meta
information contained inside the file itself. This meta
information can range from dimensional data (i.e.: a
1024x768 pixel image size) to camera data (make,
model, f-stop and aperture settings, etc). This makes
dealing with large volumes of digital imagery much less
cumbersome and is a feature that just a few short years
ago required expensive their party software packages to
even begin to implement such functionality.

In addition to the feature sets of programs and the ease
of use that comes with these advances, there has also
been a groundswell of support for digital camera buffs
on the internet. New enthusiast message boards, chat
rooms, review sites and tutorials pop up on the internet
every day. No matter what camera you use or media
card you prefer, you will be able to find vast amounts of
information regarding your hobby on the net. One
particularly useful feature of the entire ?digital photo
revolution? is the easily accessible product information
that the internet facilitates.

Thanks to advances in the internet and ecommerce It is
now possible to shop for a digital camera and do side
by side comparisons to find exactly the product you are
looking for without leaving your desk. You can check
prices, read user and professional reviews, and ask
questions about your potential purchase, which allows
you, the consumer to make the most informed decisions
possible.

If you have hesitated getting into the digital camera
hobby because you were bewildered by the technology
and confused about how to get involved, now is the
time to dive in. You will find that it is a fun a
stimulating hobby that can be enjoyed by enthusiast of
all skill levels.

MEDICAL COLUMN - - - -

Bones: Don’t Take Your Support
System For Granted
PART 8 of 9

The body has an intense desire to put all the pieces
back where they belong and to heal itself. It has an
amazing process called the inflammatory process which
is part of your body’s immune system. It brings natural
healing properties to the problem area. If you are in
good health, you will most likely heal very quickly. If
you are not, healing may take longer. If you have any
type of “hardware” in your body to keep the bones in
alignment, you may find that it may need to be removed
later on. Companies which manufacture this type of
equipment try their best to find materials which cause
no or little body reaction (inert), but reactions
happen from time to time. It’s the same as someone
rejecting a donor heart or kidney. If needed, it’s easy
to remove the offending part once the healing is
complete.  And of course, once healing is complete, all
the bone‘s responsibilities are back in full force or
as much as possible depending on its capabilities. Your
underlying belief must be that your body can be
healed…somehow. But you simply can’t just drill a hole
into it, patch in some hardware and expect it all to
heal immediately.

How can you help your bones either stay healthy or
restore their health? Use a lot of common sense. Rest
and relax as much as you need to. Your body will let
you know: you must pay attention. Pain and discomfort
are two of the ways the body lets you know it needs
some changes or relief. Once you are given the green
light to start your rehabilitation process, exercise
normally, but don’t get carried away. Avoid stressing
your joints too much, but do stress them enough to keep
them healthy. Remember that no pressure or stress
(lying in bed) ends up atrophying or shrinking the
muscles. Over-exercising is known to cause oxidative
stress. That is a cause of degenerative conditions.
Provide your body with proper alignment. (Stand up
straight.) Not only will you feel better, but the air
exchanges will be much more effective, thus helping
even more with waste management. It will also help
balance your weight more evenly. Remember that your
body craves balance in all things.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"Are you looking for furniture?"

"Not really, Brock. Mom just wanted to show me
your nice new store. I guess what looked like a
real tragedy for Pinehill actually turned out not
bad."

"Well, thanks to your folks. They were
marvelous, helping everybody out and all. After
the danger was over and the shock was over, we all
began to rebuild. It kinda brought the town
together, made us a community again. It helped us
all learn to care for one another again. This is a
nice town, El, and it took that disaster to bring
out the best in people. I guess that happens all
over the world when disaster strikes. People
within the affected community get together and
help everyone out. That's good. Yes, when it was
all over, we regrouped and what with insurance
monies were able to rebuild. I like it, don't
you?"

"You bet. You just never know what will happen
do you. Good comes from all things, even the most
terrible of circumstances can produce great good.
All we have to do is look for it, and it comes."

"What do you do down in South America?"

"Brock, I am a woman with two children. I,
too, am a stay at home Mom. But I think you are
asking with the thought in mind I live in a city
like Pinehill. I don't. I live in a very small
village about half way up the Amazon river. I live
amongst people you would think of as primitive. I
met them when I was away on my journey and I fell
in love with the head man of the village. His name
is Mazunta. He is a big strapping man, a wise man
and a loving man. He is out at the lake with my
Dad and the kids right now."

"Gee, when you come to visit I want you to
bring him along. If you fell in love with him
Eloise he must be some kind of a guy. You always
had a good head on your shoulders. I'd like to
meet him."

"Thank you Brock. I will bring him. I'd best
get back to Mom and you best look after those
people over there. We'll talk soon. Thanks."

Eloise walked around the store until she found
her Mother.

"You can't go very far in this town without
folks recognizing you, can you?"

"No, Mom. All the people working in these
stores now are people my age, people I went to
school with. I know nearly all of them. Brock was
in the bunch at the table the night Mr. Gladstone
came over and invited me to his table. He married
Mary Hamilton who was also there that night. They
were good friends when we were in school. Brock
invited Maz and I over for a visit. I think I'd
like to do that."

"Good for you. I'll bet Maz would like that
too. You ready? Maybe we should get back to the
car. It's 5:30 now and the boys stomachs will be
growling, although I'm not sure they expect us for
supper. Hey! would you like to eat out tonight?
Should we go over to the motel restaurant? That
would be neat." Alewka was animated with the idea.

Eloise knew that is what her Mom wanted so she
agreed.

The pair of them walked out of the furniture
store and began their walk back to the car.
Nothing more happened along the way. They nodded
their heads in hello to a few passers by but
otherwise they were left to their own as ordinary
citizens.

"You know, the people of Pinehill seem to have
accepted you now, Mom. There doesn't seem to be
any more trouble from the churches or elsewhere."

"It is only superficial Eloise. The explosion
that blew this block of buildings apart caused us
to go to work to help out. The towns people seem
to know we were a help and have decided to leave
us alone. Most of the churches have lost a lot of
their congregations because of their opposition to
us. It wasn't the opposition but they all revealed
themselves to be hypocrites over the matter. They
lost credibility. When we help without any thought
of getting anything in return the towns folk don't
understand, but they are thankful. A lot of people
are afraid of us. They will nod hello in passing
but they don't really want to stop and talk. Only
once in a while when some family has someone
hurting will they come to see your Dad and I. We
help them and then they again become frightened of
us and stay away. It all seems to be working out
in a funny kind of a way."

They parked the car in the motel parking lot
and walked into the restaurant. The moment they
opened the door they could hear Ben Striker's
booming voice. He was laughing hard at something
funny.

He stopped immediately when he sensed Alewka
and Eloise. He turned, then stood up. "Alewka,
Eloise. Welcome. It's nice to see you. Come join
us at our table. Where's Sam and Maz?"

TODAY'S REPORT:

This is formatting week folks. So I will take a day or more
to get that done and then it is back into doing paperwork
to give to our accountant for tax time. Don't you just love
the annual pilgrimage to alter of government where they
take what they want and you are supposed to be thankful
for it?

Never forget folks, those you you who live in a country
of democratically elected government, taxation is the price
we pay for that. If you don't want to pay that price then
there are tribes or countries run by dictators that will be
happy to have you. Then you will pay a price you really
won't like.

HA! HA! HA!

After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean
bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was
supposed to be transporting from Harare to Bulawayo
had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence,
the driver went to a nearby bus-stop and offered
everyone waiting there a free ride. He then delivered
the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the
staff that the patients were very excitable and prone
to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't
discovered for 3 days. Man, I like that one...

An American teenager was in the hospital yesterday
recovering from serious head wounds received from
an oncoming train. When asked how he received the
injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to
see how close he could get his head to a moving train
before he was hit.
