Can rats climb trees?

ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------

What is a geek (besides a slang term for a bright,
but strange individual)?

A geek is traditionally a carnival performer who, advertised
as a wild-man, bites the heads off of chickens and snakes.
Present-day geeks will eat anything from lightbulbs to entire
cars (over a period of time, of course). For a truly grotesque
twist on the geek and carnival oddities, check out the book
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn.

Is it true that rats can squeeze themselves under doors?

It's pretty scary, but true: even very large rats can fit through
very tiny spaces. How tiny? Well, let's put it this way - if you
have a hole about the size of a nickel in your wall, you could
one day see a rat squeezing through it. Rats are largely
made up of cartilage, which is flexible.

Music in the Digital Age
by Esperdi Bova

We are on the brink of a major change in the way the
music industry operates. Digital music will not just
change the way people purchase music, but it will also
change the way musicians approach creating albums.
Digital music gives people the opportunity to
instantaneously purchase a song they like without
having to purchase the rest of the album. Artists and
executives are both going to have to look at how music
is released, and if it is worth producing an entire
album if people aren't going to buy it.

Piracy of course is another major issue that the
music industry will have to look into and examine.
Currently, it is so simple to download a single
song - everyone does it and doesn't feel that what
they're doing is illegal. Laws are being put into place
in an attempt to stop downloading illegal music, but
technology always appears to be one step ahead of
the law. Some companies have found success
offering music downloads for a price, but this practice
only enforces the concept of downloading one or two
songs from an artist, and not buying the entire album.

This trend may force the music industry to change
the way they package music to the masses. People's
tastes will become a larger factor and will affect the
finished product. Personalized CDs and play lists will
have a larger influence. Instead of artists creating new
albums, they might focus their attention on one song,
or perhaps executives will look into theme compilations
give a number of different bands and artists one theme,
and then release that music all together. Whatever the
music industry decides on, the next few years are
going to revolutionize the way we view and listen ?
to popular music. The music industry will never be the
same.

Rebound
Recognizing That Too Much Of A Good
Thing Might Not Continue To Be Good.
PART 1 of 3

The term "rebound" has several meanings, but it's allergy time
and I want to bring something to your attention. Did you know
that taking a dose of your nasal decongestant is very helpful,
but taking more than PRESCRIBED doses could be
counter-productive? Yes, that's true. And few people understand
this. We all assume it's good to do something that clears up our
sinuses...So a bit more wouldn't be harmful, and probably be
beneficial. We also believe that over the counter medications
aren't really medications. So you rationalize that there is no
harm in taking them...and as they are harmless, but work well,
taking more isn't a problem...Right? Wrong! Taking more could do
one or two things...make the situation worse or make the whole
effort useless. I am speaking mainly about nasal decongestants
and allergy products...those products that help you breathe when
your nose and eyes are irritated and you just can't stand it any
longer. So you reach for the sprays or the tablets. In essence
"rebound" means taking MORE of a good thing and thinking it will
be even better and more helpful. But there are other meanings to
"rebound" So let's work on a several of the other definitions.
(And there are still a few more.)

You could be "rebounding" from or recovering from an illness. It
could also mean the sudden retraction of a muscle after it has
been in a certain position for a while. It's what happens when
you cut elastic after it's been stretched. It "pops" back into
its original position.

Another rebound definition could be happening with your abdomen.
If you have ever had appendicitis, you will recall the "tapping"
the doctor did on your extremely sensitive abdomen and you
really wanted them to stop! The doctor puts pressure on the
abdomen and the release of this pressure causes pain. This is a
form of unwanted (involuntary) rigidity and is diagnosed as
"rebound tenderness". This is a diagnostic test and tells the
doctor that this requires immediate medical attention. Surgery
may be necessary. This can be caused by an injury to the abdomen
(car accident or fall), acute appendicitis (inflammation and
infection of that tiny piece of intestinal tag hanging off the
bowel). It can be caused by peritonitis (infection of the inside
wall of the abdomen), gastrointestinal (stomach and intestine)
perforation (any number of accidents types or traumas) and
cholecystitis (an inflammation and possible infection of your
gallbladder).

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET

<><><><>

THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby

--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts

The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

They ate their meal and had a good visit with
Ben and Helen. "Come out to the lake and visit us
you two. We'll be there for a while. Come anytime.
I think Eloise wants to take Maz to visit some
friends one evening, but other than that everyone
will be there. Come on out."

"That sounds good, Alewka. We haven't been out
there for a while. I like it out there. We'll be
out." Helen accepted the invitation.

Alewka and Eloise got into the car and drove
home. Alewka parked the car in the garage and
closed the big garage door. Walking into the
kitchen they found the boys had left, as expected.

"Well, that was some shopping trip. We didn't
buy a thing, not even supper. That was nice of Ben
to pick that up for us. I suggest we get ourselves
to the lake before Maz puts the kids to bed."

"That sounds good Mom. That was a neat day. I
enjoyed it. All set?"

"You bet."

In the time it takes to blink the two ladies
were in the kitchen at the cabin at the lake.
Everyone was there. The kids had been out playing
late and the men had just given them supper.

"Having fun, I see!" Eloise made the comment
to Maz, as she came up behind him.

"Oh hi Bueno. Have a good day?"

"You bet. I haven't done that for a very long
time. Not many supermarkets in the village back
home." She was teasing him.

"Yeah! Maybe we should build one just for
you." Mazunta laughed. "The kids have had a great
day. They've been out exploring. The trees are
different here, as is most of the foliage. They
wouldn't go into the water at first. They didn't
know if there were crocodiles of pirana here like
back at home. Dad finally had to go swimming with
them before they would believe it to be safe. All
this is new to them. They are enjoying it."

"I figured they would. Kids are kids, all over
the world. We used to love it up here when we were
kids so I knew they'd like it. I don't suppose
they have any ideas about going to bed either,
have they?" Eloise laughed. It didn't matter if
the kids went to bed or not. This was a break for
them too.

"They sure haven't been making any signs that
they're tired. Billy and Tom have been keeping
them busy. They had planned a game of hide and
seek after supper. Either that or a game called
"Kick The Can?" Mazunta was perplexed.

"Didn't you ever play that game when you were
young? You don't know what it is do you? That's
like hide and seek only there is a can called home
base. If any of the kids can get to the can and
kick it away from home base then any of the kids
that have been caught are once again free. The one
doing the seeking has to be very careful or he/she
will be the seeker all night. We used to play it
until long after dark. I'm sure we drove Mom and
Dad crazy. It's fun. Maybe you and I should play
with them?"

"That wouldn't do for a dignified old lady
like you now would it?" Mazunta knew the slap was
coming. He loved to tease his wife. They had fun
together.

Slap him she did, and kicked him and punched
him and had her arms flailing like a windmill
before he finally got his arms around her to stop.
She was laughing so hard she could hardly stand
up. "You're a big nut. You tease me all the time.
You see, Mom and Dad, what I have to put up with?"

They all laughed. "Life is hard Tinkerbell. I
told you that a long time ago." Sam laughed the
more.

"Mom, these men are incessant with their
teasing. We're going to have to get back at them."

"Leave me out of it. This is your party, not
mine." Alewka laughed.

Maz finally let her down. He stood a head
above her in height. It was easy for him to bend
down and get her feet off the floor. The two of
them played like this lots. Marriage was still fun
for the pair of them.

Sam looked at Alewka and winked in a mutual
appreciation of their daughter and her husband.

"Sam, we invited Ben and Helen down sometime.
I don't know when they will be coming but they
said they'd be here."

"Terrific. We always enjoy Ben and Helen.
Good."

The adults retired to the front room of the
cabin and the kids, including Tom and Billy, went
outside. It wasn't long before the sounds of them
playing the game of hide and seek could be heard
inside the cabin. It brought back sweet memories
for Eloise.

"You know what you guys, we can't have a fire
as big as the one you folks have at night down in
the village, but we can sure have one. Maz come
help me build it. I'll bet we can even get the
kids interested in sitting around the fire and
having hot chocolate before we put them to bed."
Sam was half way out of the house by the time he
finished his sentence. Maz was right behind him.

HA! HA! HA!

Schwartz and Feldman, partners in the garment industry,
had just suffered through their worst season ever. Eight
thousand madras sports coats were hanging on the rack
unsold, and bankruptcy was looming closer each day.

Out of the blue, in walked a buyer from Australia. "I
say there," he began, "you boys wouldn't happen to have
any madras sports coats, would you? I've been looking
for them everywhere."

Schwartz said there MIGHT be a few left, and soon a
deal was made whereby the eight thousand jackets
would be shipped to Australia at a handsome profit.

"There is one thing though," said the Australian buyer.
"For an order this large, I'll have to get a confirmation
from my home office. I don't anticipate any problem,
and unless I send you a telegram by this Friday, the
deal goes through as planned."

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday passed slowly, with
the partners nervously waiting to see if the Australian
would change his mind. Friday morning went by without
incident. Schwartz and Feldman were closing up shop
when, at five minutes to five, there was a knock on the
door: "Telegram!"

The partners froze. Trembling, Feldman grabbed the
telegram and opened it.

Suddenly, his face lit up. "Schwartz, GREAT NEWS!
Your brother died!"
