ANSWERS TO YESTERDAY'S TRIVIA - - - -
--------------
What is an elephant bird?
The elephant bird (Aepyornis), now extinct, was one of
the largest birds ever to live on this planet. This bird,
found only on the island of Madagascar, could weigh
more than 1,000 pounds and stood as tall as ten feet. It
had wings, but could not fly. Elephant bird eggs could
measure as much as 13 by 9.5 inches. The birds definitely
lived more than 10,000 years ago, but some scientists
speculate that a few were still around within the past
few centuries.
What bird can live as long as 80 years?
The crow.

TITLE ARTICLE - - -
-----------------
Your Loving Daughter, Mary
Dear Mom and Dad,
It has now been three months since I left for college.
I have been remiss in writing and I am very sorry for
my thoughtlessness. I will bring you up to date now,
but before you read on, please sit down. YOU ARE NOT TO
READ ANY FURTHER UNLESS YOU ARE SITTING DOWN,
okay? Well, I am getting along pretty well now. The skull
fracture and the concussion I got when I jumped out of
the window of my dormitory when it caught fire shortly
after my arrival are pretty well healed now. I only
spent two weeks in the hospital and I now can see
almost normally and I only get those sick headaches
once a week.
Fortunately, the fire in the dormitory and my jump was
witnessed by an attendant at the gas station near the
dorm and he was the one who called the fire department
and the ambulance. He also visited me at the hospital
and since I had nowhere to live because of the
burnt-out dorm, he was kind enough to invite me to
share his apartment with him. It's really an attic
room, but it's kind of cute. He is a very fine boy and
we have fallen deeply in love and are planning to get
married. We haven't exactly set the date yet, but it
will be before my pregnancy begins to show. Yes, Mom
and Dad, I am pregnant. I know how you are looking
forward to being grandparents and I know you will
welcome the baby and give it the same love and devotion
and tender care you gave me as a child. The reason for
the delay in our marriage is that my boyfriend has some
minor infection which prevents us from passing our
premarital blood tests and I carelessly caught it from
him. This will soon clear up with the penicillin
injections I am taking daily.
Now that I have brought you up to date, I want to tell
you that there was no dormitory fire. I do not have a
concussion or a skull fracture, I was not in the
hospital, I am not pregnant, I am not engaged, I do not
have syphilis and in fact there is no man in my life.
However, I am getting a "D" in history and a "F" in
science class and I wanted you to see these marks in
their proper perspective.
Your loving daughter,
Mary

Bioburden: How Much Is Too Much
How Many Bugs (Micro-organisms) Create A Problem
PART 3 of 11
Different types of scientists including pathologists,
virologists, and biologists are in charge of overseeing
this function. They then delegate some of their
responsibility to staff members who include technicians
and support staff. Scientists study these
micro-organisms all the time. Unfortunately the
micro-organisms also change their methods of operation
frequently and that makes their growth patterns
unpredictable. The hospitals Infection Control
department is always on the lookout for changes.
Testing is the responsibility of a laboratory
department. They have the appropriate testing
equipment. There are several tools, but the most
common one is the auger (blood) plate. Some of the
suspected micro-organisms are placed on one of these
plates and allowed to grow in perfect conditions. The
laboratory technician, who is trained to recognize the
results, will read the plate and document the
outcome.
The term nosocomial means that this infection was
acquired during the hospital stay. And the reason the
term is important is that this infection may be more
difficult to treat and to overcome. And many nosocomial
infections involve viruses which can easily be spread
via the air. More about this later.
One very important aspect of this measurement is to
know that unless there are MILLIONS AND MILLIONS of
micro-organisms, you will not know they are present.
They are invisible to the naked eye. So what would you
measure if you couldnt see anything? Based on previous
scientific research, it is assumed that they are
present. These testing methods will prove or disprove
their existence.

THE NET'S BEST KEPT SECRET
<><><><>
THE SAGA OF PINEHILL
by Ken Darby
--------------------------------------
Eloise Henry, age 18 when the story began
and David Wylie, age 20, were selected by a
stranger in town to take a dangerous trip,
together. The idea was that each was to take
only the clothes on their back and go
anywhere in the world where the stranger
took them. They were to be left there to find
their own way home. They had no money,
no identification, and no idea where they
were. If they arrived back home, there
would be a million dollars waiting in each
of their bank accounts
The story deals with their adventures along
and leads to the only way they could survive.
The story leads to many friends, many
adventures and many places.
As you read enjoy. It continues . . . . . . .

"I feel sorry for people like that. It isn't
that they don't know. It is that they don't want
to see what they are doing. They don't care if
they hurt someone. Inside them they think that if
someone is hurt it must be the fault of the one
that is hurting. The drinker always thinks that
for some reason those around him don't understand
him. Alone, he really thinks, stupidly of course,
that he is the only one in step with the world."
"That pretty much sums it up Eloise. That's
what happens. But they go on drinking until they
can no longer afford it and the family becomes
destroyed."
"Come on you guys. Let's change the subject.
Surely there are more pleasant things we can talk
about. This is a wonderful day, warm, bright.
Enjoy. " Alewka was wanting to change the subject.
She well knew this particular one was a negative
and the drunk was even having an adverse affect on
them.
"Kip, I see you have a new boat. Pretty sharp.
Like it?"
"Sure do Sam. We saved up for a long time to
get it and we wanted a good one. This one is an
inboard and it goes like blazes. We like it. I
tried turning it hard and fast while at full
speed. I don't think you can tip it. It has a wide
beam and is very steady. I'd like to take you for
a ride Sam, and your family. You'd like it."
"We'd love to go Kip, thanks. Whenever you're
set just pull up to the pier and we'll see you."
"Do you do any of that water skiing, Kip?
"A little, Mazunta. That is mostly for the
younger set, but I do some. That's part of the
reason we bought the boat. The kids are getting
bigger and soon they are going to want Dad to pull
them all over. They love the water. This cabin has
been good for us. We move out in the spring and
stay until school time in the fall. I commute to
work. How about you Mazunta. What do you work at?"
Maz developed a smile on his face. "Kip, I
think you would have to come visit Bueno and I to
understand how we live. No, I don't work in the
sense you think. I am the headman of our village
and Bueno, I'm sorry, I mean Eloise, is the
headmistress. It is our job to see things all run
smooth within the village and to ensure 'esprit de
corps' so to speak.
"Oh, I didn't know. I would never have thought
you lived like that. You look so much like one of
us." Kip suddenly realized the mistake he had
made.
"I am 'one of you' Kip. Now don't get
embarrassed. I know what you meant. When we come
up here to visit we dress and act like our hosts.
That threw you off. You didn't know." Mazunta was
kind, calm and loving of Kip. He well realized
that if you haven't been to his village you would
never know the lifestyle.
"D ... d ... do you live like Sam and Alewka?
I mean do you do that higher law stuff?"
"Yes, Kip. I do that higher law stuff. I
figured I had to learn it if I was going to marry
this pretty lady here." He put his arm around
Eloise and the two smiled at one another.
"I'm not sure I understand."
"I met Eloise when she came down to our
country on that journey she took at the whim of a
Mr. Gladstone. You are all aware of that trip. It
was the talk of the town, I understand. While
Eloise was in the jungles, not knowing how to
survive, she found she had to go inside and listen
to what her Maker was telling her. Had she not
done that she would have perished. The more she
depended upon what she was being told from her
insides the more she began to rely on it. Soon it
was a way of life for her. She happened across a
stranger in the bush. This stranger had become
stranded across the river from where his village
was. The flooding river had taken his canoe from
it's moorings. The stranger was stranded on the
opposite side of the river until the floods were
over. There Eloise found him. She invited the
stranger into her camp where she and her friend,
David Wiley, shared. Eventually she taught this
stranger what she had learned. She taught him to
live by higher law just as she had learned it.
This stranger, along with David Wiley, built a
canoe during the rainy season and when the rains
quit they paddled back to his village. That
stranger is my best friend. That is when I met
Eloise. I knew immediately I wanted her to be my
wife, just as I knew I would have to learn what
she has learned that we may not be unequally
yoked. I did, and the rest you can see."
"Wow, Sam, all sorts of stuff came out of that
trip, didn't it."
"We were all afraid, at first, Kip. That was a
perilous journey. None of us knew what the outcome
would be. It ended up wonderful. We are so
thankful. Yet we have found this is for every man.
All one needs do is make the choice."

HA! HA! HA!
My husband was playing golf with our town's fire chief
when he hit a ball into the rough. As he headed for the
brush to find his ball, the chief warned him, "Be
careful, the rattlesnakes are out." The chief explained
that calls had been coming in all week asking for
assistance with removing the snakes.
"You've got to be kidding," was the astonished reply.
"People actually call the fire department to help them
with rattlesnakes? What do you say to them?"
"Well," said the chief, "the first thing I ask is, 'Is
the snake on fire?'"
